With the advent of the transistor in the late 1940's have come an entirely new field of engineering and a greatly renewed interest in solid state physics. This paper will be concerned in general with the electrical properties of these materials, and specifically drift mobility of the minority carriers in n-type germanium. The minority carrier in n-type material is the hole. The definition of drift mobility is: the mean carrier velocity per unit electric field.

In the initial part of the following investigation; expressions will be obtained for the Hertz potential in three regions of arbitrary conductive and dielectric properties. The regions are separated from each other by two infinite parallel planes. In directions normal to these planes, the regions above and below the intermediate layer are considered to be of semi-infinite extent. The regions are individually homogeneous. An electric dipole is located in one of the semi-infinite media, which will be called medium 1. The intermediate layer is called medium 2, and the other medium 3.

A pulsed gas, electrodeless discharge, plasma accelerator facility has been developed for experimental studies of the coupling mechanism for the transfer of energy from a driving magnetic field to a plasma. Gas at low pressure is ionized by an azimuthal electrical field induced through the action of a rapidly varying axial magnetic field produced by the flow of current through a ring surrounding a confining glass shock tube. The tube is arranged to permit radial expansion of the ionized gas. Due to its conductivity, the plasma, once it is formed, can exclude the rapidly varying driving magnetic field for a …

The high precision radars now in use have demonstrated the need for more exact refraction correction than is afforded by any fixed "standard" refractive index profile. The precision capabilities are even substantial enough to cause concern over the possible effects of the non-symmetric index distribution which introduces azimuthal errors. However, the indications are that the present limitation on true range measurements are primarily due to limitations on the radar itself, and a "gross" average correction is adequate for many cases of interest.

The development of the transistor has brought about a great deal of research in the field of semiconductors. One of the results in this research is the development of the Hall effect. A number of new devices which utilize the Hall effect have been proposed; however, more theoretical and experimental work is required to determine which of these devices are practical. The success of the equivalent circuit approach in the other fields of electrical engineering suggests that an equivalent circuit which would represent Hall effect devices would be useful. "The problem investigated in this research was the development of a static integrating circuit applicable to closed loop feedback control systems. Investigation of various methods of attack indicated that square loop magnetic cores offered characteristics required for the integration process. "The problem was the application of matrix theory to the solution of the reflection and transmission coefficients for a plane wave incident on a layered media. Background material relating to the problem was reviewed. Equations that were used in the solution of the problem were either derived or explained. The derivations for the reflection and transmission coefficients were carried out in order, starting with the simple case of normal incidence on a junction of two infinite media and progressing through the more difficult case of oblique incidence on a layer of finite thickness separating two infinite media. "The thesis describes some experimentally observed data and analytical approaches to the study of a relay servomechanism. The experimental data were secured from an analog simulation of a relay servo system. The results of this data were compared to the transient approach by use of the phase-plane method. The stability of the system was determined using a describing-function. The analytical approaches are described in the presentation.

A microwave interferometer technique which may be used as a diagnostic tool for determining the electronic properties of a moving plasma is described and analyzed. The plasma and microwaves are confined in a wave guide and longitudinal observation is employed. The complex reflection coefficient determined from resultant standing-wave pattern provides the means for obtaining the complex dielectric constant, conductivity, electron concentration and collision frequency of electrons with molecules in the plasma. The plasma used for these experiments is the reaction products of a gas detonation.

This report describes a practical current regulator system used to accurately control the current delivered by a 500 kilowatt motor-generator unit. The generator supplies its current of 2000 amperes at 250 volts to a large water-cooled air-core solenoid used by LASL Group P-7 for experiments in connection with the Sherwood program.
After a general discussion of the system specifications and the basic regulator loop, each of the components in the basic regulator loop is described in considerable detail. "A method of determining the minimum detectable power density incident at the receiving antenna of a UHF receiver is proposed. The minimum detectable power density is the power density required to produce a signal-to-noise ratio of unity in the output of the receiver. The proposed method includes the receiving antenna impedance, the necessary connecting transmission lines, and the receiver impedance.
It is shown that an error in the antenna directivity will produce a significant error in the overall sensitivity of a receiving system. Since the directivity is the most difficult system variable to determine experimentally, it is probably the limiting …

"The purpose of this thesis is to illustrate the practicality of using an auxiliary servo system to shift parameters in damping networks of the main servo system.
Since amplification is most easily achieved with A.C. amplifiers and since A.C. servo motors are superior in operation to D.C. servo motors, because no brushes or commutators are needed, the A.C. servo system is widely used. However, one major problem is confronted when designing an A.C. servo system. "Modern radar systems must provide greater detection ranges both against high and low altitude targets because of the significant advances in weapon speed and range. Extended range indicates that the power transmitted by the radar must be increased. It follows, that ground return becomes a problem even at high altitudes.
There are at present three basic types of radars which are (1) pulsed, (2) continuous wave, and (3) pulsed doppler radar. This thesis describes the design of a device for determining the transfer function of a nuclear reactor. A number of different methods have been successfully employed for this purpose but were, in some cases, tedious or required the use of delicately balanced components. The equipment described computes values which are simply related to the values of the transfer function and is operable over a frequency range of about 1000:1. The time required to obtain data for one frequency point is two minutes or less. No precise adjustment is necessary during operation.

For the purpose of this report, it is assumed that the behavior of the transistor can be predicted from the study of a suitable circuit model or equivalent circuit of the transistor. It is further assumed that, except for the intrinsic short-circuit current gain, the circuit parameters of he transistor are independent of frequency and temperature. The primary interest in the study of transistor distributed amplifier here is the amplitude of the voltage gain in the amplification of video frequencies. Somewhat less detailed studies are made of the distributed amplifier in band-pass applications.

"Scope of the Investigation: The small volume sandwich antenna was patterned after that of F. D. Clapp's which appears in an unpublished report written for the United States Navy. Clapp's antenna is shown in Figure 2. The antenna described in this report was investigated at approximately one-thousandth of the volume of the original Clapp antenna. Clapp's antenna was designed for the 225-400 megacycle range; while the author's model was designed for operation at 400 megacycles.

The subject of this paper is the design of an ultrastable, fixed- frequency power supply capable of maintaining a high degree of amplitude stability over a wide range of resistive load values. The requirement for such a power supply originally arose in connection with the design of a particular piece of test equipment required by Sandia Corporation. No attempt will be made in this paper to justify or explain the necessity for the specified design criteria outlined in the following paragraphs other than to adequately define the design criteria.
