This thesis presents the design and implementation of a smart irrigation system that combines Internet of Things hardware with a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural network for predictive soil moisture management. The goal is an affordable and reliable solution that uses real-time sensor data and environmental data to schedule irrigation before the substrate moisture drops below its target range. The system integrates soil moisture, temperature, humidity, and sensors on an Arduino Nano that communicates wirelessly with a Raspberry Pi. Power quality disturbances (PQDs) are among the primary challenges facing modern electrical systems, as they degrade the performance and lifespan of connected equipment. This thesis investigates the relationship between the rate at which voltage waveform data are sampled, the reliability of these measurements, and the ability of deep neural networks to classify PQDs accurately. A one-dimensional convolutional neural network (CNN) was trained and evaluated across multiple sampling rates and signal-to-noise ratios to quantify how information loss in the temporal and spectral domains affects classification reliability. There is a need to understand the physical mechanisms for excess noise factor (F) in avalanche diodes for all regions of operation. The current classical theory accounts for F only for low carrier multiplication where single carrier injection starts the avalanche process. Our model fits the white noise exhibited by reverse-biased avalanche diodes in the entire operation region of four orders of current magnitude. In this sense, it is a first. Interpreting multi-layer perceptron (MLP) classifier outputs as posterior probabilities is a well-established practice in machine learning and is supported in the literature. However, several authors point out that MLP outputs are very poor estimates of the posterior probabilities. This is demonstrated for classifiers with and without nonlinear output activation. Achieving this reliability depends on key factors such as model complexity, sufficient training data availability, and optimization techniques' effectiveness. Bulk dielectric breakdown and surface flashover must be prevented in all use cases, especially those that occur in polluted environments. This work studies a multi-player H-infinity differential game for systems of general linear dynamics. In this game, multiple players design their control inputs to minimize their cost functions in the presence of worst-case disturbances. We first derive the optimal control and disturbance policies using the solutions to Hamilton-Jacobi-Isaacs (HJI) equations. We then prove that the derived optimal policies stabilize the system and constitute a Nash equilibrium solution. Two integral reinforcement learning (IRL) -based algorithms, including the policy iteration IRL and o -policy IRL, are developed to solve the differential game online. This thesis investigates model-based and data-driven approaches for indoor localization using the Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) of Wi-Fi signals. We study multiple model-based indoor localization approaches, including the free space path loss model, the log-distance path loss model, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) model, and a nonlinear regression model. We examine their indoor localization accuracy using raw RSSI values, and filter RSSI values passed through a Moving Average filter and a Kalman filter. This thesis proposes an offline method that uses an integral reinforcement learning (IRL) technique along with the system identification to determine the optimal control of a system with completely unknown dynamics. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) that are particularly deployed to track and land on an arbitrarily moving unmanned ground vehicles (UGV), demand a high performance controller to perform precise tracking. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) comprise a deep learning technology which is widely used to perform image classification. In this research, we review CNN structures and explain how they can be used for finding license plates in vehicle images. We summarize how the standard CNN processes images into features and compare it to Region-Based Convolutional Neural Networks (R-CNN). Employing UAV path planning under spatiotemporal wind effect as a case study, this work implements a modeling framework composed by the vehicle dynamics, environmental effect and communication model that transmits wind field data. The LVPS (Low Voltage Power Supply) is a switching power supply custom designed for the ATLAS Tile Calorimeter at the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva Switzerland. Over one thousand of these LVPS, also called ’bricks’, will be produced for an upgrade cycle of all the detector electronics of the experiment. The responsibility of the technical design and manufacturing of these LVPS bricks has been supported by Dr. Hadavand’s ATLAS group at UT Arlington. A new method for training Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) classifiers is presented. First, an objective function is defined in terms of the number of clusters, K, per class, the mean vectors, the inverse covariance matrices for each class, and the prior probabilities for each class. For each increment in K, gradients of the objective function improve upon the prior probabilities, mean vectors, and inverse covariance matrices. Improvement in accuracy for different data-sets are shown and results are compared with the EM algorithm.
