This thesis pertains to an electric circuit consisting of gaseous discharge tubes and rectifiers arranged to comprise a counting or integrating device for electric impulses impressed on the system. The ideas presented herewith are wholly those of the author and were submitted in the form of a patent application via the New Mexico School of Mines in June 1950. The basic idea for such a circuit was conceived on November 14, 1949.

This paper is a monograph on general precision criteria for feedback linear time base circuits. The linearity and stability performance of these devices is evaluated in terms of deviation from an ideal ramp function.

In its entirety, the paper attempts to provide a complete reference for the most commonly encountered aspects of time base precision. Attention is centered on what could be called the "low frequency" case, which most often is valid in applications requiring a high precision time base.

A study of the design, development and fabrication details of a transmitter for a microwave refractometer is presented. Atmospheric, radio frequency, refractive index is to be measured rapidly and directly up to altitudes of the order of 200,000 feet. Requirements for the transmitter with regard to its weight, volume and environment are indeed stringent since it is proposed to package the transmitter in a ogive configuration and elevate it to these altitudes utilizing a rocket propulsion system.

In the past, analyses of tropospheric reactions of electromagnetic waves propagating in the atmosphere have been based on spherically symmetric medium. However, this applies only to ray bending in a vertical plane (elevation angles). Numerous methods have been developed to correct for elevation angle errors. In 1961, the presentation of a new method for use in a nonsymmetric atmosphere revived interest in horizontal (azimuth angle) bending. In order to use this method to test significance of azimuth angle errors, the spacial distribution of index of refraction must be known.

This work, after the critical examination of the theoretical background on back-scattering from rough surfaces, offers a new approach to its theory. Various back-scatter theories, as well as the statistical models of terrain and moon assumed therein, are critically reviewed and correlated. A new approach which uses a simple statistical model is then presented for the description of scattering of electromagnetic waves from a rough surface. The electromagnetic noise spectrum extends from below 1 cps to above 3,000 mcs. Within this spectrum many phenomena of atmospheric noise have been observed. Those atmospherics which occur in the audio frequency region of the spectrum have been given not only descriptive but also subjective names by many different investigators. As a result, it is often difficult to determine from the literature what aspect of the noise phenomenon is being considered. A Study Of Gamma-Ray Photoconductivity In Organic Dielectric Materials, Stanley E. Harrison

The gamma-ray photoconductivities of polyethylene, polystyrene, polyvinylchloride, polypropylene, Teflon, Nylon, Kel-F, and three thermosetting resins denoted as Epoxy 1478-1, 1478-3, and 1478-22 have been measured. The measurements were made at steady-state gamma-ray intensities ranging from 1.0rad(H2O)/min to 3.0 x 105 rads(H2o)/min and at controlled temperatures ranging from 90 degrees Fahrenheit to 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Conductivity changes resulting from the steady-state gamma-ray exposures were measured continuously throughout the exposure and after the exposure. The exposure period was of sufficient duration to allow all samples to achieve an equilibrium conductivity value.

"Transient response plays an important role in servomechanism, electronic and electrical circuits. A time response of a linear system is the intuitive and immediately comprehensible description of the system performance. The utility of the system performance in television and high speed computer circuits can be determined by its transient characteristics. "The problem, as presented, is to derive analytical expressions for the conversion gain, bandwidth, and noise figure of a self excited tunnel diode converter and to verify, if possible, the validity of these express- ions by building such a converter. These analytical results are presented and discussed. The converter circuit is shown along with the resulting intermediate frequency output. Gain and bandwidth measurements are also given. It is concluded that the self excited converter could very definitely be of value as a low noise pre-amplifying device in the ultra-high frequency and microwave frequency ranges"--Abstract, page ii.

"The purpose of this thesis is the study of a predictive control system by simulating it on an analog computer. Logic criteria for step reference inputs are derived by the phase- plane technique, and tie corresponding logic network designed to bring the error and error rate of the controlled system toward zero in the least possible time.

The responses of the predictive control system for step, ramp, sinusoidal and exponential reference inputs are investigated with primary emphasis placed on the rise time and overshoot for several values of step inputs of the reference.

Model experiments are commonly employed in situations where a full-scale experiment is uneconomical and where exact theoretical analysis is very difficult. The physical problem is scaled to convenient laboratory dimensions and a means is provided for controlling and measuring the parameters of the experiment. Measurements made in the model system are required to provide information on the time and space variations of functions which describe the real system. When interpreting results it is frequently necessary to consider "scale effects" which arise from certain parameters exerting a different influence in the model than in the real system.

Physical energy dissipation elements, unlike their usual mathematical models, are often nonlinear. An example of such a nonlinear element is the mechanical damper. Since dissipation elements are used in most types of compensation, the problem of nonlinear compensation is an important one.

In this paper a comparison of pulse of fm radar altimeters is made from the standpoint of the mathematical expressions describing each system’s return signal from terrain at near-vertical incidence. The pulse-fm radar relationships resulting from this comparison facilitates application of the extensive information gained in previous pulse radar studies to the investigation of fm radar terrain return and the associated design of fm radar altimeters, and may also assist in the development of the new pulse-type radars.

This thesis is concerned with the development of a method to measure the temperature of a metal surface during a time interval of a few microseconds while it is being subjected to a strong shock. The temperature of a special interest is the temperature of the free surface which appears after a strong shock has been reflected from that surface. This temperature remains constant until another shock wave is reflected from the surface, except for the change caused by heat loss to the surroundings by radiation.

Single Crystal Rutile TiO2 upon reduction by heating in an atmosphere of hydrogen becomes a semiconductor, and the conductivity increases with the time and temperature of reduction. The reduction process creates oxygen vacancies with which there are associated two loosely bound electrons. These electrons may be raised to the conduction band by thermal excitation. Hence, an oxygen vacancy behaves like an impurity donor site.
