Interest Aware Peoplerank: Towards Effective Social-Based Opportunistic Advertising, Soumaia Al Ayyat
Interest Aware Peoplerank: Towards Effective Social-Based Opportunistic Advertising, Soumaia Al Ayyat
Papers, Posters, and Presentations
Various emerging context aware social-based applications and services assume constant non-disruptive connectivity. Mobile advertisers in such environments want to reach potentially interested users in a given proximity and within a specified short duration, whether these users are connected to the network or not. While opportunistic forwarding algorithms can be leveraged for forwarding these advertisements, there is little incentive for those not interested in the ad to act as forwarders. Our goal in this paper is to leverage explicit interest, gathered from a user’s social profile, and integrate it with social-based opportunistic forwarding algorithms in order to enable soft real time …
The Use Of Complexity Theory And Strange Attractors To Understand And Explain Information System Development, Arthur P. Tomasino
The Use Of Complexity Theory And Strange Attractors To Understand And Explain Information System Development, Arthur P. Tomasino
2013
In spite of the best efforts of researchers and practitioners, Information Systems (IS) developers are having problems "getting it right". IS developments are challenged by the emergence of unanticipated IS characteristics undermining managers ability to predict and manage IS change. Because IS are complex, development formulas, best practices or development guides simply will not work. The difficulties in these system developments stem from the complexity of IS arising from the inter-relationship, interaction, and interconnectivity of the elements in the system and its environment. This research uses complexity concepts to help solve the problem with IS development and explain why so …
Routing, Localization And Positioning Protocols For Wireless Sensor And Actor Networks, Mustafa Akbas
Routing, Localization And Positioning Protocols For Wireless Sensor And Actor Networks, Mustafa Akbas
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Wireless sensor and actor networks (WSANs) are distributed systems of sensor nodes and actors that are interconnected over the wireless medium. Sensor nodes collect information about the physical world and transmit the data to actors by using one-hop or multi-hop communications. Actors collect information from the sensor nodes, process the information, take decisions and react to the events. This dissertation presents contributions to the methods of routing, localization and positioning in WSANs for practical applications. We first propose a routing protocol with service differentiation for WSANs with stationary nodes. In this setting, we also adapt a sports ranking algorithm to …
Mathematical And Computational Methods For Freeform Optical Shape Description, Ilhan Kaya
Mathematical And Computational Methods For Freeform Optical Shape Description, Ilhan Kaya
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Slow-servo single-point diamond turning as well as advances in computer controlled small lap polishing enable the fabrication of freeform optics, specifically, optical surfaces for imaging applications that are not rotationally symmetric. Freeform optical elements will have a profound importance in the future of optical technology. Orthogonal polynomials added onto conic sections have been extensively used to describe optical surface shapes. The optical testing industry has chosen to represent the departure of a wavefront under test from a reference sphere in terms of orthogonal φ-polynomials, specifically Zernike polynomials. Various forms of polynomials for describing freeform optical surfaces may be considered, however, …

Recognition Of Complex Events In Open-Source Web-Scale Videos: Features, Intermediate Representations And Their Temporal Interactions, Subhabrata Bhattacharya
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Recognition of complex events in consumer uploaded Internet videos, captured under realworld settings, has emerged as a challenging area of research across both computer vision and multimedia community. In this dissertation, we present a systematic decomposition of complex events into hierarchical components and make an in-depth analysis of how existing research are being used to cater to various levels of this hierarchy and identify three key stages where we make novel contributions, keeping complex events in focus. These are listed as follows: (a) Extraction of novel semi-global features – firstly, we introduce a Lie-algebra based representation of dominant camera motion …
Optimal Network Topologies And Resource Mappings For Heterogeneous Networks-On-Chip, Haera Chung
Optimal Network Topologies And Resource Mappings For Heterogeneous Networks-On-Chip, Haera Chung
Dissertations and Theses
Communication has become a bottleneck for modern microprocessors and multi-core chips because metal wires don't scale. The problem becomes worse as the number of components increases and chips become bigger. Traditional Systems-on-Chips (SoCs) interconnect architectures are based on shared-bus communication, which can carry only one communication transaction at a time. This limits the communication bandwidth and scalability. Networks-on-Chip (NoC) were proposed as a promising solution for designing large and complex SoCs. The NoC paradigm provides better scalability and reusability for future SoCs, however, long-distance multi-hop communication through traditional metal wires suffers from both high latency and power consumption. A radical …
Current-Mode Quadrature Oscillator Based On Cccdtas With Noninteractive Dual-Current Control For Both Condition Of Oscillation And Frequency Of Oscillation, Adirek Jantakun, Winai Jaikla
Current-Mode Quadrature Oscillator Based On Cccdtas With Noninteractive Dual-Current Control For Both Condition Of Oscillation And Frequency Of Oscillation, Adirek Jantakun, Winai Jaikla
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The realization of 2 current-mode quadrature oscillators using current-controlled current differencing transconductance amplifiers (CCCDTAs) and grounded capacitors is presented. The proposed oscillators can provide 2 sinusoidal output currents with a 90° phase difference. They enable noninteractive dual-current control for both the condition of oscillation and the frequency ofi oscillation. The high-output impedances of the configurations enable the circuit to be cascaded without additional current buffers. The use of only grounded capacitors is ideal for integration. The circuit performances are depicted through PSpice simulations; they show good agreement to theoretical anticipation.

Ssr Mitigation With Sssc Thanks To Fuzzy Control, Seyed Mohammad Hassan Hosseini, Hadi Samadzadeh, Javad Olamaei, Murtaza Farsadi
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This paper deals with the capability of a static synchronous series compensator (SSSC) to attenuate the subsynchronous resonance (SSR). Two well-known controllers are designed, namely a conventional damping controller (CDC) and fuzzy logic damping controller (FLDC). These 2 damping controllers are added to a main control loop of a SSSC operating as a SSR damping controller. It should be noted that, to optimize the parameters of the CDC, a versatile optimization technique is implemented, namely particle swarm optimization (PSO). A comprehensive comparison between the 2 control methods is carried out for different operational conditions. To observe the superior performance of …

Expecting The Unexpected : Measuring Uncertainties In Mobile Robot Path Planning In Dynamic Envionments, Yan Li, Brian Mac Namee, John D. Kelleher
Conference papers
Unexpected obstacles pose significant challenges to mobile robot navigation. In this paper we investigate how, based on the assumption that unexpected obstacles really follow patterns that can be exploited, a mobile robot can learn the locations within an environment that are likely to contain obstacles, and so plan optimal paths by avoiding these locations in subsequent navigation tasks. We propose the DUNC (Dynamically Updating Navigational Confidence) method to do this. We evaluate the performance of the DUNC method by comparing it with existing methods in a large number of randomly generated simulated test environments. our evaluations show that, by learning …

Robustness Of Speech Quality Metrics To Background Noise And Network Degradations: Comparing Visqol, Pesq And Polqa, Andrew Hines, Naomi Harte, Jan Skoglund, Anil Kokaram
Conference papers
The Virtual Speech Quality Objective Listener (ViSQOL) is a new objective speech quality model. It is a signal based full reference metric that uses a spectro-temporal measure of similarity between a reference and a test speech signal. ViSQOL aims to predict the overall quality of experience for the end listener whether the cause of speech quality degradation is due to ambient noise, or transmission channel degradations. This paper describes the algorithm and tests the model using two speech corpora: NOIZEUS and E4. The NOIZEUS corpus contains speech under a variety of background noise types, speech enhancement methods, and SNR levels. …
Monitoring The Effects Of Temporal Clipping On Voip Speech Quality, Andrew Hines, Naomi Harte, Jan Skoglund, Anil Kokaram
Monitoring The Effects Of Temporal Clipping On Voip Speech Quality, Andrew Hines, Naomi Harte, Jan Skoglund, Anil Kokaram
Conference papers
This paper presents work on a real-time temporal clipping monitoring tool for VoIP. Temporal clipping can occur as a result of voice activity detection (VAD) or echo cancellation where comfort noise in used in place of clipped speech segments. The algorithm presented will form part of a no-reference objective model for quantifying perceived speech quality in VoIP. The overall approach uses a modular design that will help pinpoint the reason for degradations in addition to quantifying their impact on speech quality. The new algorithm was tested for VAD compared over a range of thresholds and varied speech frame sizes. The …
Automatic Detection Of Abnormal Behavior In Computing Systems, James Frank Roberts
Automatic Detection Of Abnormal Behavior In Computing Systems, James Frank Roberts
Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science
I present RAACD, a software suite that detects misbehaving computers in large computing systems and presents information about those machines to the system administrator. I build this system using preexisting anomaly detection techniques. I evaluate my methods using simple synthesized data, real data containing coerced abnormal behavior, and real data containing naturally occurring abnormal behavior. I find that the system adequately detects abnormal behavior and significantly reduces the amount of uninteresting computer health data presented to a system administrator.
Automatic Performance Level Assessment In Minimally Invasive Surgery Using Coordinated Sensors And Composite Metrics, Sami Taha Abu Snaineh
Automatic Performance Level Assessment In Minimally Invasive Surgery Using Coordinated Sensors And Composite Metrics, Sami Taha Abu Snaineh
Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science
Skills assessment in Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) has been a challenge for training centers for a long time. The emerging maturity of camera-based systems has the potential to transform problems into solutions in many different areas, including MIS. The current evaluation techniques for assessing the performance of surgeons and trainees are direct observation, global assessments, and checklists. These techniques are mostly subjective and can, therefore, involve a margin of bias.
The current automated approaches are all implemented using mechanical or electromagnetic sensors, which suffer limitations and influence the surgeon’s motion. Thus, evaluating the skills of the MIS surgeons and trainees …
Algorithms For Fault Tolerance In Distributed Systems And Routing In Ad Hoc Networks, Qiangfeng Jiang
Algorithms For Fault Tolerance In Distributed Systems And Routing In Ad Hoc Networks, Qiangfeng Jiang
Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science
Checkpointing and rollback recovery are well-known techniques for coping with failures in distributed systems. Future generation Supercomputers will be message passing distributed systems consisting of millions of processors. As the number of processors grow, failure rate also grows. Thus, designing efficient checkpointing and recovery algorithms for coping with failures in such large systems is important for these systems to be fully utilized. We presented a novel communication-induced checkpointing algorithm which helps in reducing contention for accessing stable storage to store checkpoints. Under our algorithm, a process involved in a distributed computation can independently initiate consistent global checkpointing by saving its …
Using Grounded Theory To Develop A Framework For Software Testing Best Practice In A Telecommunications Company, David Hendrick
Using Grounded Theory To Develop A Framework For Software Testing Best Practice In A Telecommunications Company, David Hendrick
Dissertations
Software testing is a key part of the software development process, irrespective of the development methodology being followed. Estimates suggest that testing can account for more than 50% of the cost of a software development project. However, the cost of inadequate testing or verifying software can be far greater; this can result in losses that could total more than 10% of an organisation’s turnover. It is clear that software testing is essential; but while many companies implement different forms of testing, there is often no structure or best practice followed to this testing. There appears to be a gap in …

The Information Technology (IT) Group at the Population Council responded to a need for a technology solution that would help researchers obtain more accurate responses to survey questions that concerned subject matter of a sensitive nature. The IT Group had three goals: (1) to enhance research by obtaining the best data possible, (2) to operate successfully in the local environment and be welcomed by the local populations, and (3) to increase the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of the survey process. This paper outlines approaches to consider when designing and implementing self-administered information and communications technology (ICT) questionnaires in developing countries, and …
Information Security Challenge Of Qr Codes, Nik Thompson, Kevin Lee
Information Security Challenge Of Qr Codes, Nik Thompson, Kevin Lee
Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law
The discipline of information security must adapt to new technologies and methods of interaction with those technologies. New technologies present both challenges and opportunities for the security professional, especially for areas such as digital forensics. Challenges can be in the form of new devices such as smartphones or new methods of sharing information, such as social networks. One such rapidly emerging interaction technology is the use of Quick Response (QR) codes. These offer a physical mechanism for quick access to Web sites for advertising and social interaction. This paper argues that the common implementation of QR codes potentially presents security …
Measuring Inconsistency Methods For Evidentiary Value, Fred Cohen
Measuring Inconsistency Methods For Evidentiary Value, Fred Cohen
Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law
Many inconsistency analysis methods may be used to detect altered records or statements. But for admission as evidence, the reliability of the method has to be determined and measured. For example, in China, for evidence to be admitted, it has to have 95% certainty of being correct,1 and that certainty must be shown to the court, while in the US, evidence is admitted if it is more probative than prejudicial (a >50% standard).2 In either case, it is necessary to provide a measurement of some sort in order to pass muster under challenges from the other side. And in most …

Technology Corner Visualising Forensic Data: Evidence (Part 1), Damian Schofield, Ken Fowle
Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law
Visualisation is becoming increasingly important for understanding information, such as investigative data (for example: computing, medical and crime scene evidence) and analysis (for example: network capability assessment, data file reconstruction and planning scenarios). Investigative data visualisation is used to reconstruct a scene or item and is used to assist the viewer (who may well be a member of the general public with little or no understanding of the subject matter) to understand what is being presented. Analysis visualisations, on the other hand, are usually developed to review data, information and assess competing scenario hypotheses for those who usually have an …

System-Generated Digital Forensic Evidence In Graphic Design Applications, Enos Mabuto, Hein Venter
Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law
Graphic design applications are often used for the editing and design of digital art. The same applications can be used for creating counterfeit documents such as identity documents (IDs), driver’s licences, passports, etc. However, the use of any graphic design application leaves behind traces of digital information that can be used during a digital forensic investigation. Current digital forensic tools examine a system to find digital evidence, but they do not examine a system specifically for the creating of counterfeit documents created through the use of graphic design applications. The paper in hand reviews the system-generated digital forensic evidence gathered …
