Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are increasingly deployed in safety-critical applications such as logistics, surveillance, disaster response, and urban air mobility. While their autonomy enables powerful capabilities, it also introduces vulnerabilities due to hardware faults, software defects, communication failures, and adversarial interference. This survey presents a comprehensive review of research studies closely related to UAV anomalies published between 2015 and 2025, covering 111 papers from academic and industrial sources. We introduce a unified five-pillar taxonomy—anomaly generation, prevention, detection, recovery, and analysis—that organizes existing work across the full anomaly management lifecycle. In contrast to prior surveys that focus primarily on detection algorithms, …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Digital services represent a business approach employed by organizations to operate in the digital environment. However, systematic development guidelines for developing quality digital service systems are lacking in the literature. The authors identified four general challenges for developing and implementing customer-engaging digital service systems (CEDSS). By employing the method of canonical action research in a digital service system project, they derived 10 design principles for developing high-quality CEDSS. They empirically evaluated the design principles in the development project and through follow-up focus group sessions. The design principles provide applicable and actionable guidelines for the development of CEDSS.

Storage Location Optimization In Automated Storage And Retrieval Systems: A Deep Reinforcement Learning Approach, Lingjun Wang, Aldy Gunawan, Pieter Vansteenwegen
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This study investigates the optimization of storage location in automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS). We introduce an optimization approach based on the Deep Q-Network (DQN) algorithm to enhance warehouse task efficiency and minimize stacker travel during storage and retrieval. To accelerate the algorithm training process, we integrate a prioritized experience replay mechanism. Furthermore, we decouple action selection from value estimation within the DQN framework to address the issue of value overestimation. The proposed model is evaluated against three heuristic methods. The experimental results demonstrate that our approach significantly outperforms these baselines.

Regularly testing deep learning-powered systems on newly collected data is critical to ensure their reliability, robustness, and efficacy in real-world applications. This process is demanding due to the significant time and human effort required for labeling new data. While test selection methods alleviate manual labor by labeling and evaluating only a subset of data while meeting testing criteria, we observe that such methods with reported promising results are simply evaluated, e.g., testing on original test data. The question arises: are they always reliable? In this article, we explore when and to what extent test selection methods fail. First, we identify …
Modeling Multiple Tasks In Recommendation Systems, Dinh Hieu Do
Modeling Multiple Tasks In Recommendation Systems, Dinh Hieu Do
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Traditional research in recommendation systems has largely centered on the static offline supervised learning setting. In this paradigm, all available user-item interaction data is collected and partitioned into fixed training, validation, and test sets. Models are developed and evaluated in this controlled environment, where the underlying data distribution is assumed to remain unchanged. This approach offers clear advantages: it simplifies experimentation, enables reproducible benchmarking, and allows for straightforward comparisons between algorithms.
However, this static offline setting does not reflect the realities faced by modern recommendation systems. In real-world applications, data is dynamic and ever-evolving, where new users and items are …
From Sparse Feedback To Sequential Decision-Making: Learning Safety Constraints With Weak Supervision, Siow Meng Low
From Sparse Feedback To Sequential Decision-Making: Learning Safety Constraints With Weak Supervision, Siow Meng Low
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Real-world decision-making often involves safety constraints that are implicit, non-Markovian, or difficult to specify directly. Standard reinforcement learning (RL) approaches typically assume access to fully specified cost functions and constraint budgets—assumptions that limit their applicability in domains where such structure must instead be inferred from data. This dissertation develops a sequence of methods for learning safety-relevant structure from weak supervision, such as sparse binary feedback on trajectory segments, and using these signals to guide planning and policy optimization.
The first part of the dissertation introduces a sample-efficient method for planning in continuous Markov Decision Processes (MDPs) using deep reactive policies. …

Advancing Food Nutrition Estimation Via Visual-Ingredient Feature Fusion, Huiyan Qi, Bin Zhu, Chong-Wah Ngo, Jingjing Chen, Ee-Peng Lim
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Nutrition estimation is an important component of promoting healthy eating and mitigating diet-related health risks. Despite advances in tasks such as food classification and ingredient recognition, progress in nutrition estimation is limited due to the lack of datasets with nutritional annotations. To address this issue, we introduce FastFood, a dataset with 84,446 images across 908 fast food categories, featuring ingredient and nutritional annotations. In addition, we propose a new model-agnostic Visual-Ingredient Feature Fusion (VIF2 ) method to enhance nutrition estimation by integrating visual and ingredient features. Ingredient robustness is improved through synonym replacement and resampling strategies during training. The ingredient-aware …
Meta-Learning Hyperparameters For Foundation Model Adaptation In Remote-Sensing Imagery, Zichen Tian, Yaoyao Liu, Qianru Sun
Meta-Learning Hyperparameters For Foundation Model Adaptation In Remote-Sensing Imagery, Zichen Tian, Yaoyao Liu, Qianru Sun
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Training large foundation models of remote-sensing (RS) images is almost impossible due to the limited and long-tailed data problems. Fine-tuning natural image pre-trained models on RS images is a straightforward solution. To reduce computational costs and improve performance on tail classes, existing methods apply parameter-efficient fine-tuning (PEFT) techniques, such as LoRA and AdaptFormer. However, we observe that fixed hyperparameters -- such as intra-layer positions, layer depth, and scaling factors, can considerably hinder PEFT performance, as fine-tuning on RS images proves highly sensitive to these settings. To address this, we propose MetaPEFT, a method incorporating adaptive scalers that dynamically adjust module …

Llm-Enhanced Multiple Instance Learning For Joint Rumor And Stance Detection With Social Context Information, Ruichao Yang, Jing Ma, Wei Gao, Hongzhan Lin
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The proliferation of misinformation, such as rumors on social media, has drawn significant attention, prompting various expressions of stance among users. Although rumor detection and stance detection are distinct tasks, they can complement each other. Rumors can be identified by cross-referencing stances in related posts, and stances are influenced by the nature of the rumor. However, existing stance detection methods often require post-level stance annotations, which are costly to obtain. We propose a novel LLM-enhanced Multiple Instance Learning (MIL) approach to jointly predict post stance and claim class labels, supervised solely by claim labels, using an undirected microblog propagation model. …

Most of current anomaly detection models assume that the normal pattern remains the same all the time. However, the normal patterns of web services can change dramatically and frequently over time. The model trained on old-distribution data becomes outdated and ineffective after such changes. Retraining the whole model whenever the pattern is changed is computationally expensive. Further, at the beginning of normal pattern changes, there is not enough observation data from the new distribution. Retraining a large neural network model with limited data is vulnerable to overfitting. Thus, we propose a Light Anti-overfitting Retraining Approach (LARA) based on deep variational …

Fuzzing Drones For Anomaly Detection: A Systematic Literature Review, Vikas Kumar Malviya, Wei Minn, Lwin Khin Shar, Lingxiao Jiang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Drones, also referred to as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), are becoming popular today due to their uses in different fields and recent technological advancements which provide easy control of UAVs via mobile apps. However, UAVs may contain vulnerabilities or software bugs that cause serious safety and security concerns. For example, the communication protocol used by the UAV may contain authentication and authorization vulnerabilities, which may be exploited by attackers to gain remote access over the UAV. Drones must therefore undergo extensive testing before being released or deployed to identify and fix any software bugs or security vulnerabilities. Fuzzing is one …

With the rising awareness of data assets, data governance, which is to understand where data comes from, how it is collected, and how it is used, has been assuming evergrowing importance. One critical component of data governance gaining increasing attention is auditing machine learning models to determine if specific data has been used for training. Existing auditing techniques, like shadow auditing methods, have shown feasibility under specific conditions such as having access to label information and knowledge of training protocols. However, these conditions are often not met in most real-world applications. In this paper, we introduce a practical framework for …

Inadequate toothbrushing habits are a leading cause of oral health problems such as tooth decay. Many individuals are uncertain if they are brushing effectively or over-focusing on specific areas. While high-end electric toothbrushes can address these concerns, manual toothbrushes remain widely used due to their simplicity and affordability. In this paper, we introduce BrushBuds, an earphone-based toothbrushing monitoring system aimed at tracking brushing areas, which leverages the ubiquitous presence of earphones to enhance manual toothbrushing. BrushBuds utilizes Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) in earphones to detect subtle head movements incurred by toothbrushing. By capturing distinct motion patterns specific to brushing for …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Multi-agent systems (MASs) have achieved remarkable success in multi-robot control, intelligent transportation, and multiplayer games, etc. Thorough testing for MAS is urgently needed to ensure its robustness in the face of constantly changing and unexpected scenarios. Existing methods mainly focus on single-agent system testing and cannot be directly applied to MAS testing due to the complexity of MAS. To our best knowledge, there are fewer studies on MAS testing. While several studies have focused on adversarial attacks on MASs, they primarily target failure detection from an attack perspective, i.e., discovering failure scenarios, while ignoring the diversity of scenarios. In this …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Container Runtime Systems (CRSs), which form the foundational infrastructure of container clouds, are critically important due to their impact on the quality of container cloud implementations. However, a comprehensive understanding of the quality issues present in CRS implementations remains lacking. To bridge this gap, we conduct the first comprehensive empirical study of CRS bugs. Specifically, we gather 429 bugs from 8,271 commits across dominant CRS projects, including runc, gvisor, containerd, and cri-o. Through manual analysis, we develop taxonomies of CRS bug symptoms and root causes, comprising 16 and 13 categories, respectively. Furthermore, we evaluate the capability of popular testing approaches, …

As the use of pervasive devices expands into complex collaborative tasks such as cognitive assistants and interactive AR/VR companions, they are equipped with a myriad of sensors facilitating natural interactions, such as voice commands. Spatio-Temporal Video Grounding (STVG), the task of identifying the target object in the field-of-view referred to in a language instruction, is a key capability needed for such systems. However, current STVG models tend to be resource-intensive, relying on multiple cross-attentional transformers applied to each video frame. This results in runtime complexity that increases linearly with video length. Furthermore, deploying these models on mobile devices while maintaining …

Recommender System Design And Multi-Channel Pricing: Personalization Strategies For Online Platforms, Hao Zhang
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
The advancement of mobile technology and rising consumer demands have contributed to the unprecedented growth of online platforms. In online platforms, recommender systems connect with multistakeholders who have different interests. Designing recommender systems to balance the benefit of multistakeholders is important for these platforms. In addition, price is an important factor influencing consumers’ purchase decisions. An increasing number of online platforms introduce multiple sales channels. Optimizing multiple-channel prices is vital for these platforms. Thus, this thesis designs multistakeholder recommender systems and multi-channel pricing strategies for online platforms through the following two works.
The first work focuses on designing multistakeholder recommender …

Non-Vacuous Generalization Bounds For Adversarial Risk In Stochastic Neural Networks, Mustafa Waleed, Liznerski Philipp, Antoine Ledent, Wagner Dennis, Wang Puyu, Kloft Marius
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Adversarial examples are manipulated samples used to deceive machine learning models, posing a serious threat in safety-critical applications. Existing safety certificates for machine learning models are limited to individual input examples, failing to capture generalization to unseen data. To address this limitation, we propose novel generalization bounds based on the PAC-Bayesian and randomized smoothing frameworks, providing certificates that predict the model’s performance and robustness on unseen test samples based solely on the training data. We present an effective procedure to train and compute the first non-vacuous generalization bounds for neural networks in adversarial settings. Experimental results on the widely recognized …

This work demonstrates the VGGlass system, which simultaneously interprets human instructions for a target acquisition task and determines the precise 3D positions of both user and the target object. This is achieved by utilizing LiDARs mounted in the infrastructure and a smart glass device worn by the user. Key to our system is the union of LiDAR-based localization termed LiLOC and a multi-modal visual grounding approach termed RealG(2)In-Lite. To demonstrate the system, we use Intel RealSense L515 cameras and a Microsoft HoloLens 2, as the user devices. VGGlass is able to: a) track the user in real-time in a global …

Owner-Free Distributed Symmetric Searchable Encryption Supporting Conjunctive Queries, Qiuyun Tong, Xinghua Li, Yinbin Miao, Yunwei Wang, Ximeng Liu, Robert H. Deng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Symmetric Searchable Encryption (SSE), as an ideal primitive, can ensure data privacy while supporting retrieval over encrypted data. However, existing multi-user SSE schemes require the data owner to share the secret key with all query users or always be online to generate search tokens. While there are some solutions to this problem, they have at least one weakness, such as non-supporting conjunctive query, result decryption assistance of the data owner, and unauthorized access. To solve the above issues, we propose an Owner-free Distributed Symmetric searchable encryption supporting Conjunctive query (ODiSC). Specifically, we first evaluate the Learning-Parity-with-Noise weak Pseudorandom Function (LPN-wPRF) …

In order to obtain evidence of a crime timely, most authorities encourage whistleblowers to provide valuable reports by rewarding them with prizes. However, criminals will try their best to delete or tamper with the reports and even threaten and revenge the whistleblowers to escape punishment. Hence, to make the reporting system work, it is essential to ensure the integrity of reported messages and the anonymity of the reporting and rewarding procedures in the reporting system. Most existing schemes for this problem are generally based on ring signatures, which incur high computational overhead and imperfect anonymity. In this paper, we introduce …

Objectfusion: Multi-Modal 3d Object Detection With Object-Centric Fusion, Q. Cai, Y. Pan, T. Yao, Chong-Wah Ngo, T. Mei
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Recent progress on multi-modal 3D object detection has featured BEV (Bird-Eye-View) based fusion, which effectively unifies both LiDAR point clouds and camera images in a shared BEV space. Nevertheless, it is not trivial to perform camera-to-BEV transformation due to the inherently ambiguous depth estimation of each pixel, resulting in spatial misalignment between these two multi-modal features. Moreover, such transformation also inevitably leads to projection distortion of camera image features in BEV space. In this paper, we propose a novel Object-centric Fusion (ObjectFusion) paradigm, which completely gets rid of camera-to-BEV transformation during fusion to align object-centric features across different modalities for …

When Routing Meets Recommendation: Solving Dynamic Order Recommendations Problem In Peer-To-Peer Logistics Platforms, Zhiqin Zhang, Waldy Joe, Yuyang Er, Hoong Chuin Lau
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Peer-to-Peer (P2P) logistics platforms, unlike traditional last-mile logistics providers, do not have dedicated delivery resources (both vehicles and drivers). Thus, the efficiency of such operating model lies in the successful matching of demand and supply, i.e., how to match the delivery tasks with suitable drivers that will result in successful assignment and completion of the tasks. We consider a Same-Day Delivery Problem (SDDP) involving a P2P logistics platform where new orders arrive dynamically and the platform operator needs to generate a list of recommended orders to the crowdsourced drivers. We formulate this problem as a Dynamic Order Recommendations Problem (DORP). …

Event forecasting has been a demanding and challenging task throughout the entire human history. It plays a pivotal role in crisis alarming and disaster prevention in various aspects of the whole society. The task of event forecasting aims to model the relational and temporal patterns based on historical events and makes forecasting to what will happen in the future. Most existing studies on event forecasting formulate it as a problem of link prediction on temporal event graphs. However, such pure structured formulation suffers from two main limitations: 1) most events fall into general and high-level types in the event ontology, …

Waste from electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) or e-waste describes end-of-life electronic products that are discarded. Due to their toxic and negative impacts to humans' health, many publications have been proposed to handle, however, studies related to e-waste collection and transportation to waste disposal sites are not widely studied so far. This study proposes a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model to solve the e-waste collecting problem by formulating it as the heterogeneous vehicle routing problem with multiple time windows (HVRPMTW). The model is validated with newly developed benchmark instances that are solved by commercial software, CPLEX. The model is …

Connecting The Dots For Contextual Information Retrieval, Pei-Chi Lo
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
There are many information retrieval tasks that depend on knowledge graphs to return contextually relevant result of the query. We call them Knowledgeenriched Contextual Information Retrieval (KCIR) tasks and these tasks come in many different forms including query-based document retrieval, query answering and others. These KCIR tasks often require the input query to contextualized by additional facts from a knowledge graph, and using the context representation to perform document or knowledge graph retrieval and prediction. In this dissertation, we present a meta-framework that identifies Contextual Representation Learning (CRL) and Contextual Information Retrieval (CIR) to be the two key components in …

Machine learning (ML) has gained much attention and has been incorporated into our daily lives. While there are numerous publicly available ML projects on open source platforms such as GitHub, there have been limited attempts in filtering those projects to curate ML projects of high quality. The limited availability of such a high-quality dataset poses an obstacle to understanding ML projects. To help clear this obstacle, we present NICHE, a manually labelled dataset consisting of 572 ML projects. Based on the evidence of good software engineering practices, we label 441 of these projects as engineered and 131 as non-engineered. This …

With the growing popularity of Non-Fungible Tokens (NFT), a new type of digital assets, various fraudulent activities have appeared in NFT markets. Among them, wash trading has become one of the most common frauds in NFT markets, which attempts to mislead investors by creating fake trading volumes. Due to the sophisticated patterns of wash trading, only a subset of them can be detected by automatic algorithms, and manual inspection is usually required. We propose NFTDisk, a novel visualization for investors to identify wash trading activities in NFT markets, where two linked visualization modules are presented: a radial visualization module with …

Relation Extraction (RE) is a vital step to complete Knowledge Graph (KG) by extracting entity relations from texts. However, it usually suffers from the long-tail issue. The training data mainly concentrates on a few types of relations, leading to the lack of sufficient annotations for the remaining types of relations. In this paper, we propose a general approach to learn relation prototypes from unlabeled texts, to facilitate the long-tail relation extraction by transferring knowledge from the relation types with sufficient training data. We learn relation prototypes as an implicit factor between entities, which reflects the meanings of relations as well …
