Feature-Based Fault Detection Of Industrial Gas Turbines Using Neural Networks, Abbas Rasaienia, Behzad Moshiri, Mohammadamin Moezzi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Gas turbine (GT) fault detection plays a vital role in the minimization of power plant operation costs associated with power plant overhaul time intervals. In other words, it is helpful in generating pre-alarms and paves the way for corrective actions in due time before incurring major equipment failures. Hence, finding an efficient fault detection technique that is applicable in the online operation of power plants involved with minor computations is an urgent need in the power generation industry. Such a method is studied in this paper for the V94.2 class of GTs. As the most leading stage for developing a …

Shifted-Modified Chebyshev Filters, Meti̇n Şengül Jan 2013

Shifted-Modified Chebyshev Filters, Meti̇n Şengül

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper introduces a new type of filter approximation method that utilizes shifted-modified Chebyshev filters. Construction of the new filters involves the use of shifted-modified Chebyshev polynomials that are formed using the roots of conventional Chebyshev polynomials. The study also includes 2 tables containing the shifted-modified Chebyshev polynomials and the normalized element values for the low-pass prototype filters up to degree 6. The transducer power gain, group delay, and impulse and step responses of the proposed filters are compared with those of the Butterworth and Chebyshev filters, and a sixth-order filter design example is presented to illustrate the implementation of …

Big Bang-Big Crunch Optimization Algorithm With Local Directional Moves, Hakki Murat Genç, İbrahi̇m Eksi̇n, Osman Kaan Erol Jan 2013

Big Bang-Big Crunch Optimization Algorithm With Local Directional Moves, Hakki Murat Genç, İbrahi̇m Eksi̇n, Osman Kaan Erol

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The big bang--big crunch (BB--BC) algorithm has been proposed as a novel optimization method that relies on one of the theories of the evolution of the universe, namely the big bang and big crunch theory. It has been shown that this algorithm is capable of quick convergence, even in long, narrow parabolic-shaped flat valleys or in the existence of several local extremes. In this work, the BB--BC optimization algorithm is hybridized with local search moves in between the ``banging'' and ``crunching'' phases of the algorithm. These 2 original phases of the BB--BC algorithm are preserved, but the representative point (``best'' …

Lightweight Wireless Protocol Based On Ieee 802.11 For Delay Sensitive Telerobotic Systems, Onur Toker, Haluk Gümüşkaya, Ci̇han Ulaş, Bora Tamer Yilmaz

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, we consider wireless telerobotic systems and protocol development for low-delay wireless communication. Telerobotics can be defined as the control of robot arms from a remote location. In a telerobotic system, there is a robot arm to be controlled that is identified as the `slave arm', and a remote operator at a distant location using a robotic manipulator that is called the `master arm'. In the control system measurements, actuator delays do degrade the system's performance. Therefore, communication delays between the master and slave arms, and their minimization, are of extreme importance in telerobotics. In this paper, we …

Efficient Feature Integration With Wikipedia-Based Semantic Feature Extraction For Turkish Text Summarization, Aysun Güran, Ni̇lgün Güler Bayazit, Mustafa Zahi̇d Gürbüz

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This study presents a novel hybrid Turkish text summarization system that combines structural and semantic features. The system uses 5 structural features, 1 of which is newly proposed and 3 are semantic features whose values are extracted from Turkish Wikipedia links. The features are combined using the weights calculated by 2 novel approaches. The first approach makes use of an analytical hierarchical process, which depends on a series of expert judgments based on pairwise comparisons of the features. The second approach makes use of the artificial bee colony algorithm for automatically determining the weights of the features. To confirm the …

Review Of Distinctive Phonetic Features And The Arabic Share In Related Modern Research, Yousef Alotaibi, Ali Meftah

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Most research in the field of digital speech technology has traditionally been conducted in only a few languages, such as English, French, Spanish, or Chinese. Numerous studies using distinctive phonetic features (DPFs) with different techniques and algorithms have been carried out during the last 3 decades, mainly in English, Japanese, and other languages of industrialized countries. DPF elements are based on a technique used by linguists and digital speech and language experts to distinguish between different phones by considering the lowest level of actual features during phonation. These studies have investigated the best performances, outcomes, and theories, especially those regarding …

A Linearly Slotted Waveguide Antenna And Comparison Of It With A Sinusoidal One, Alp Oral Salman Jan 2013

A Linearly Slotted Waveguide Antenna And Comparison Of It With A Sinusoidal One, Alp Oral Salman

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

A linearly slotted waveguide antenna (LSWA) is investigated. The slot is placed in one of the narrow faces of a rectangular waveguide, which operates at Ka-band (26.5--40 GHz), which is in a frequency range including upper microwaves and the lower edge of millimeter waves. Analytically, the magnetic current approach is applied. Some antenna parameters of this structure are experimentally measured and it is observed that the antenna radiates a single transversal-polarized beam that scans with frequency. The experimentally obtained patterns in 2 perpendicular planes are also correlated with analytical and numerical patterns that use the magnetic current model and HFSS, …

An Evaluation Of De-Embedding Techniques For Tsvs, Nicholas Garrett Erickson Jan 2013

An Evaluation Of De-Embedding Techniques For Tsvs, Nicholas Garrett Erickson

Masters Theses

"One of the most important aspects of modern electronic designs is device measurement and characterization. Without device measurement and characterization, the functionality of end designs cannot be guaranteed. At the silicon level (on-wafer), extracting the electrical performance of devices and structures has grown increasingly more complex with the continual shrink of feature sizes. Compared to the overall measurement setup (VNA, cables, probes, interposers, etc.), the ultra small size of on-wafer structures leads to their electrical performance being easily overshadowed by other, larger fixtures. Thus, many scientists and engineers have worked to devise ever more accurate calibration and de-embedding techniques for …

Fuzzy Logic Color Detection: Blue Areas In Dermoscopy Melanoma Images, Mounika Lingala Jan 2013

Fuzzy Logic Color Detection: Blue Areas In Dermoscopy Melanoma Images, Mounika Lingala

Masters Theses

"Malignant melanoma is one of the deadliest forms of skin cancer and is one of the most rapidly increasing cancers in the world. Image analysis techniques for the early detection of melanoma are dependent upon the detection of multiple color shades in melanoma images. Use of magnified visible-light imaging by dermoscopy allows detailed investigation of these color shades. This research explores the fuzzy logic methods for the detection and characterization of blue color shades to discriminate melanoma from benign skin lesions. Standard thresholds are placed on the RGB dermoscopy images firstly and then the restrictiveness is explored by implementing fuzzy …

Simple Analytic Performance Models For Streaming Data Applications Deployed On Diverse Architectures, Jonathan C. Beard, Roger D. Chamberlain, Mark A. Franklin Jan 2013

Simple Analytic Performance Models For Streaming Data Applications Deployed On Diverse Architectures, Jonathan C. Beard, Roger D. Chamberlain, Mark A. Franklin

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Modern hardware is inherently heterogeneous. With heterogeneity comes multiple abstraction layers that hide underlying complex systems. While hidden, this complexity makes quantitative performance modeling a difficult task. Designers of high-performance streaming applications for heterogeneous systems must contend with unpredictable and often non-generalizable models to predict performance of a particular application and hardware mapping. This paper outlines a computationally simple approach that can be used to model the overall throughput and buffering needs of a streaming application on heterogeneous hardware. The model presented is based upon a hybrid maximum flow and decomposed discrete queueing model. The utility of the model is …

Efficient Parallel Real-Time Upsampling Of Ultrasound Vectors, William D. Richard Ph.D. Jan 2013

Efficient Parallel Real-Time Upsampling Of Ultrasound Vectors, William D. Richard Ph.D.

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Upsampling is required prior to the summation step in most receive digital beamforming implementations to produce an accurate summed RF line or vector. This is true in both annular and linear array systems where receive echos are digitized first and then time delayed in the digital domain to achieve proper signal alignment. The efficient, parallel, real-time upsampling circuit presented here produces M upsampled values per ADC clock, where M is the desired upsampling factor. A circuit implementation that upsamples by a factor of M=4 is presented as an example of the more general technique.

Ewa Model With Recency Effect And Limited Memory, Hang Xie

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Game theory is an important field in economics; it studies how people make decisions amid conflict and cooperation. Various experiments have been carried to study the way people play those games, and economists study those data for various purposes. There has been a rise of need for using artificial agents to simulate the game, since we could save the cost of hiring human subjects for the experiments, and we could gain more control over the experiment settings.

Kernel Density Metric Learning, Yujie He, Wenlin Chen, Yixin Chen Jan 2013

Kernel Density Metric Learning, Yujie He, Wenlin Chen, Yixin Chen

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

This paper introduces a supervised metric learning algorithm, called kernel density metric learning (KDML), which is easy to use and provides nonlinear, probability-based distance measures. KDML constructs a direct nonlinear mapping from the original input space into a feature space based on kernel density estimation. The nonlinear mapping in KDML embodies established distance measures between probability density functions, and leads to correct classification on datasets for which linear metric learning methods would fail. Existing metric learning algorithms, such as large margin nearest neighbors (LMNN), can then be applied to the KDML features to learn a Mahalanobis distance. We also propose …

Self-Adapting Mac Layer For Wireless Sensor Networks, Mo Sha, Meng Xu, Chenyang Lu, Linh T.X. Phan, Tae-Suk Kim, Taerim Park Jan 2013

Self-Adapting Mac Layer For Wireless Sensor Networks, Mo Sha, Meng Xu, Chenyang Lu, Linh T.X. Phan, Tae-Suk Kim, Taerim Park

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

The integration of wireless sensors with mobile phones is gaining momentum as an enabling platform for numerous emerging applications. These mobile systems face dynamic environments where both application requirements and ambient wireless conditions change frequently. Despite the existence of many MAC protocols however, none can provide optimal performance along multiple dimensions, in particular when the conditions are frequently changing. Instead of pursuing a one-MAC-fit all approach we present a Self-Adapting MAC Layer (SAML) comprising (1) a Reconfigurable MAC Architecture (RMA) that can switch to different MAC protocols at run time and (2) a learning-based MAC Selection Engine that selects the …

An Application For Keeping Track Of Food Item Expiration, Rejin Paul James Jan 2013

An Application For Keeping Track Of Food Item Expiration, Rejin Paul James

Theses and Dissertations

Food, honestly, is too precious to waste. Food wastage is a very serious issue prevalent in the world today. American households alone throw out an equivalent of $165 billion worth of food each year. People often forget to consume food they purchased before the expiration date, or sometimes they over-purchase food they can have, then throw them away. Hence, this thesis aims to prevent food wastage with the help of a smart phone application that helps keep track of food item expiration dates and gives you notification alerts when it is about to expire. It implements a barcode scanner for …

Phylogeny And Ancestral Genome Reconstruction From Gene Order Using Maximum Likelihood And Binary Encoding, Fei Hu Jan 2013

Phylogeny And Ancestral Genome Reconstruction From Gene Order Using Maximum Likelihood And Binary Encoding, Fei Hu

Theses and Dissertations

Over the long history of genome evolution, genes get rearranged under events such as rearrangements, losses, insertions and duplications, which in all change the ordering and content along the genome. Recent progress in genome-scale sequencing renews the challenges in the reconstructions of phylogeny and ancestral genomes with gene-order data. Such problems have been proved so interesting that a large number of algorithms have been developed rigorously over the past few years in attempts to tackle these problems following various principles. However, difficulties and limitations in performance and scalability largely prevent us from analyzing emerging modern whole-genome data, our study presented …

Automatic Detection Of Polypoid Skin Lesions: The Squash Sign, Saurabh G. Karnik Jan 2013

Automatic Detection Of Polypoid Skin Lesions: The Squash Sign, Saurabh G. Karnik

Masters Theses

“Earlier detection of malignant melanoma can save lives. Automatic in-vivo methods of melanoma detection including smart-phone applications are now available, but specificity is low, i.e. too many benign lesions are detected as possible melanomas. Polypoids, elevated and rounded lesions are one class of benign lesions. These raised lesions with piecewise circular borders, predominantly intradermal nevi and cutaneous polyps (IDNs), are always benign. Variegated coloring present in polypoid lesions can lead physicians to perform an unneeded biopsy. Contact dermatoscope plates with gel squash these lesions, leaving a “squash sign” marker of benignancy which can be automatically detected. We present a method …

Scanner: An Efficient And Accurate Trimming Tool For Illumina Next Generation Sequencing Reads, Xiang Zhou

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Recent advances in High-Throughput Sequencing (HTS) technology have greatly facilitated the researches in bioinformatics field. With the ultra-high sequencing speed and improved base-calling accuracy, Illumina Genome Analyzer is currently the most widely used platform in the field. To use the raw reads generated from the sequencing machine, the 3’ adapter sequence attached to the real read in the process of ligation needs to be correctly trimmed. This is often done by some inhouse scripts or different packages with various parameters. They either use the Smith-Waterman algorithm or search for an exact match of the 3’ adapter sequence. In this report, …

Adding Data Parallelism To Streaming Pipelines For Throughput Optimization, Peng Li, Kunal Agrawal, Jeremy Buhler, Roger D. Chamberlain Jan 2013

Adding Data Parallelism To Streaming Pipelines For Throughput Optimization, Peng Li, Kunal Agrawal, Jeremy Buhler, Roger D. Chamberlain

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

The streaming model is a popular model for writing high-throughput parallel applications. A streaming application is represented by a graph of computation stages that communicate with each other via FIFO channels. In this report, we consider the problem of mapping streaming pipelines — streaming applications where the graph is a linear chain — in order to maximize throughput. In a parallel setting, subsets of stages, called components can be mapped onto different computing resources. The through-put of an application is determined by the throughput of the slowest component. Therefore, if some stage is much slower than others, then it may …

Real-Time Multi-Core Virtual Machine Scheduling In Xen, Sisu Xi, Meng Xu, Chenyang Lu, Linh T.X. Phan, Christopher Gill, Olga Sokolsky, Insup Lee Jan 2013

Real-Time Multi-Core Virtual Machine Scheduling In Xen, Sisu Xi, Meng Xu, Chenyang Lu, Linh T.X. Phan, Christopher Gill, Olga Sokolsky, Insup Lee

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Recent years have witnessed two major trends in the development of complex real-time systems. First, to reduce cost and enhance flexibility, multiple systems are sharing common computing platforms via virtualization technology, instead of being deployed separately on physically isolated hosts. Second, multicore processors are increasingly being used in real-time systems. The integration of real-time systems as virtual machines (VMs) atop common multicore platforms raises significant new research challenges in meeting the real-time performance requirements of multiple systems.

Parallel Real-Time Scheduling Of Dags, Abusayeed Saifullah, David Ferry, Jing Li, Kunal Agrawal, Chenyang Lu, Christopher Gill Jan 2013

Parallel Real-Time Scheduling Of Dags, Abusayeed Saifullah, David Ferry, Jing Li, Kunal Agrawal, Chenyang Lu, Christopher Gill

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Recently, multi-core processors have become mainstream in processor design. To take full advantage of multi-core processing, computation-intensive real-time systems must exploit intra-task parallelism. In this paper, we address the open problem of real-time scheduling for a general model of deterministic parallel tasks, where each task is represented as a directed acyclic graph (DAG) with nodes having arbitrary execution requirements. We prove processor-speed augmentation bounds for both preemptive and non-preemptive real-time scheduling for general DAG tasks on multi-core processors. We first decompose each DAG into sequential tasks with their own release times and deadlines. Then we prove that these decomposed tasks …

Synergistically Coupling Of Solid State Drives And Hard Disks For Qos-Aware Virtual Memory, Ke Liu Jan 2013

Synergistically Coupling Of Solid State Drives And Hard Disks For Qos-Aware Virtual Memory, Ke Liu

Wayne State University Theses

With significant advantages in capacity, power consumption, and price, solid state disk (SSD) has good potential to be employed as an extension of dynamic random-access memory, such that applications with large working sets could run efficiently on a modestly configured system. While initial results reported in recent works show promising prospects for this use of SSD by incorporating it into the management of virtual memory, frequent writes from write-intensive programs could quickly wear out SSD, making the idea less practical.

This thesis makes four contributions towards solving this issue. First, we propose a scheme, HybridSwap, that integrates a hard disk …

Architecture--Performance Interrelationship Analysis In Single/Multiple Cpu/Gpu Computing Systems: Application To Composite Process Flow Modeling, Richard Harrison Haney

Dissertations

Current developments in computing have shown the advantage of using one or more Graphic Processing Units (GPU) to boost the performance of many computationally intensive applications but there are still limits to these GPU-enhanced systems. The major factors that contribute to the limitations of GPU(s) for High Performance Computing (HPC) can be categorized as hardware and software oriented in nature. Understanding how these factors affect performance is essential to develop efficient and robust applications codes that employ one or more GPU devices as powerful co-processors for HPC computational modeling. The present work analyzes and understands the intrinsic interrelationship of both …

Computational Analysis And Prediction Of Genome-Wide Protein Targeting Signals And Localization, Jhih-Rong Lin Jan 2013

Computational Analysis And Prediction Of Genome-Wide Protein Targeting Signals And Localization, Jhih-Rong Lin

Theses and Dissertations

Computational prediction of protein subcellular localization can greatly help to elucidate its functions. Despite the existence of dozens of protein localization prediction algorithms, the prediction accuracy and coverage are still low. Several ensemble algorithms have been proposed to improve the prediction performance, which usually include as many as 10 or more individual localization algorithms. However, their performance is still limited by the running complexity and redundancy among individual prediction algorithms. In the first part of the dissertation, we propose a novel method for rational design of minimalist ensemble algorithms for practical genome-wide protein subcellular localization prediction. The algorithm is based …

Asynchronous Logic Design With Increased Fault Tolerance And Optimized For Subthreshold Operation, Ivan Santos Jan 2013

Asynchronous Logic Design With Increased Fault Tolerance And Optimized For Subthreshold Operation, Ivan Santos

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Synchronization has always been an essential feature in electronic circuits, in which functionality is achieved by an appropriate flow of data with respect to time. An ideal concept of logic design would require every operation to happen instantly; however, the application of this principle to electronics is governed by the laws of physics, which influence the time to execute a process. In fact, the speed at which a microprocessor can perform logic operations is determined by the time that charging and discharging capacitive loads requires, and the time that electric signals spend when traveling through the circuitry. Consequently, the variation …

Determining The Benefit Of Human Input In Human-In-The-Loop Robotic Systems, Christine Elizabeth Bringes

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This work analyzes human-in-the-loop robotic systems to determine where human input can be most beneficial to a collaborative task. This is accomplished by implementing a pick-and-place task using a human-in-the-loop robotic system and determining which segments of the task, when replaced by human guidance, provide the most improvement to overall task performance and require the least cognitive effort.

The first experiment entails implementing a pick and place task on a commercial robotic arm. Initially, we look at a pick-and-place task that is segmented into two main areas: coarse approach towards a goal object and fine pick motion. For the fine …

A Robust Rgb-D Slam System For 3d Environment With Planar Surfaces, Po-Chang Su Jan 2013

A Robust Rgb-D Slam System For 3d Environment With Planar Surfaces, Po-Chang Su

Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering

Simultaneous localization and mapping is the technique to construct a 3D map of unknown environment. With the increasing popularity of RGB-depth (RGB-D) sensors such as the Microsoft Kinect, there have been much research on capturing and reconstructing 3D environments using a movable RGB-D sensor. The key process behind these kinds of simultaneous location and mapping (SLAM) systems is the iterative closest point or ICP algorithm, which is an iterative algorithm that can estimate the rigid movement of the camera based on the captured 3D point clouds. While ICP is a well-studied algorithm, it is problematic when it is used in …

Independent Component Analysis Enhancements For Source Separation In Immersive Audio Environments, Yue Zhao Jan 2013

Independent Component Analysis Enhancements For Source Separation In Immersive Audio Environments, Yue Zhao

Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering

In immersive audio environments with distributed microphones, Independent Component Analysis (ICA) can be applied to uncover signals from a mixture of other signals and noise, such as in a cocktail party recording. ICA algorithms have been developed for instantaneous source mixtures and convolutional source mixtures. While ICA for instantaneous mixtures works when no delays exist between the signals in each mixture, distributed microphone recordings typically result various delays of the signals over the recorded channels. The convolutive ICA algorithm should account for delays; however, it requires many parameters to be set and often has stability issues. This thesis introduces the …

A New Simplified Federated Single Sign-On System, Chen Liang Jan 2013

A New Simplified Federated Single Sign-On System, Chen Liang

Masters

The work presented in this MPhil thesis addresses this challenge by developing a new simplified FSSO system that allows end-users to access desktop systems, web-based services/applications and non-web based services/applications using one authentication process. This new system achieves this using two major components: an “Authentication Infrastructure Integration Program (AIIP)" and an “Integration of Desktop Authentication and Web-based Authentication (IDAWA)." The AIIP acquires Kerberos tickets (for end-users who have been authenticated by a Kerberos single sign-on system in one net- work domain) from Kerberos single sign-on systems in different network domains without establishing trust between these Kerberos single sign-on systems. The …
