Faculty and Student Publications

In this work, we present a numerical study of 1D and 2D closely spaced antenna arrays of microstrip dipole antennas covered by a metasurface in order to properly cloak and decouple the antenna arrays operating at neighboring frequencies. We show that the two strongly coupled arrays fed by a microstrip-to-balanced transmission-line transition are effectively decoupled in 1D and 2D array scenarios by covering the dipole antenna elements with an elliptically shaped metasurface. The metasurface comprises sub-wavelength periodic metallic strips printed on an elliptically shaped dielectric cover around the dipole antennas and integrated with the substrate. We present a practical design …

Three-Dimensional Microscopic Image Reconstruction Based On Structured Light Illumination, Taichu Shi, Yang Qi, Cheng Zhu, Ying Tang, Ben Wu

Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research

In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a three-dimensional (3D) microscopic system that reconstructs a 3D image based on structured light illumination. The spatial pattern of the structured light changes according to the profile of the object, and by measuring the change, a 3D image of the object is reconstructed. The structured light is generated with a digital micro-mirror device (DMD), which controls the structured light pattern to change in a kHz rate and enables the system to record the 3D information in real time. The working distance of the imaging system is 9 cm at a resolution of …

Engineered Cementitious Composite For Pavement Applications: Materials Development And Design Framework, Hassan Noorvand Sep 2021

Engineered Cementitious Composite For Pavement Applications: Materials Development And Design Framework, Hassan Noorvand

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECCs) are a novel class of high-performance fiber-reinforced cementitious composites characterized by their high tensile strain capacity. While ECCs have been presented as a promising material alternative for the construction of durable pavements and overlays, the cost of these materials is a major drawback, which limits their widespread implementation. More importantly, performance prediction models for ECC pavements existing in the literature are incomplete as the effect of ECC plasticity has not been considered in the integration of finite element (FE) analysis and beam flexural fatigue experimental test results. Moreover, the existing ECC pavements performance prediction models are …

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications

Thin protonic ceramic electrolyte contributes to lower ohmic resistance and enhances electrochemical performance of protonic ceramic electrochemical cells. However, manufacturing of large-scale thin electrolyte remains a challenge. Wet powder spraying is an attractive technique to deposit <10 >μm thin electrolyte when advanced atomizing techniques and optimized spraying process are integrated. Here ultrasonic atomization is integrated in the wet powder spray technique to reduce the thickness of electrolyte. Moreover, a parametric study is conducted to optimize the wet powder spray process to deposit uniform and crack-free electrolyte film. It is illustrated that tuning of solid loading rates and spray passes can affect …

Characterization Of Foamed Warm-Mix Asphalt For Workability And Moisture Damage, Biswajit Kumar Bairgi Sep 2021

Characterization Of Foamed Warm-Mix Asphalt For Workability And Moisture Damage, Biswajit Kumar Bairgi

Civil Engineering ETDs

Warm mix asphalt (WMA) technology reduces the high mixing and compaction temperatures of conventional hot mix asphalt (HMA) by approximately 10 °C to 40 °C. In WMA technology, instead of increasing the binder-aggregate temperature, the volume of asphalt is increased by injecting water into hot asphalt at high air pressure. The amount of water injected in the binder is typically determined by a trial and error process and is termed as foaming water content (FWC). Once the FWC is in contact with the hot asphalt binder, it turns into vapor with a rapid volume expansion due …

Assessment Of Streamflow Predictions Generated Using Multimodel And Multiprecipitation Product Forcing, Bong Chul Seo, Witold F. Krajewski, Felipe Quintero, Steve Buan, Brian Connelly

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This study assesses streamflow predictions generated by two distributed hydrologic models, the Hillslope Link Model (HLM) and the National Water Model (NWM), driven by three radar-based precipitation forcing datasets. These forcing data include the Multi-Radar Multi-Sensor (MRMS), and the Iowa Flood Center's single-polarization-based (IFC-SP) and dual-polarization-based (IFC-DP) products. To examine forcing-and model-dependent aspects of the representation of hydrologic processes, we mixed and matched all forcing data and models, and simulated streamflow for 2016–18 based on six forcing–model combinations. The forcing product evaluation using independent ground reference data showed that the IFC-DP radar-only product's accuracy is comparable to MRMS, which is …

Fiber Optic-Based Thermal Integrity Profiling Of Drilled Shaft: Inverse Modeling For Spiral Fiber Deployment Strategy, Wen Deng, Ruoyu Zhong, Haiying Ma

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The current state of practice to interpret the thermal integrity profiling (TIP) data of drilled shaft is the so-called effective radius method. It uses the concrete pouring log and average temperature to construct a relationship between temperature distribution and effective radius that can be used to reconstruct a drilled shaft model. While this effective radius method is computationally inexpensive and has good operationality, it is not good at predicting the dimensions and shape of shaft defects. Upgrading the sensor used in conventional TIP from thermocouples/thermal wires to fiber optic sensors, the spatial resolution of the measured temperature will be enhanced. …

Multifunctional Corrosion Control System As A Sustainable Approach For Reinforced Concrete Elements, Homero Castaneda, Miladin Radovic, Brendy Rincon, Oladis Troconis, Arturo Montoya, Changkyu Kim, Loreto Dacio

Data

Corrosion inhibitors can be utilized to decrease the corrosion kinetics and therefore increase the durability of reinforced concrete structures. Recently, a green synthesized organic compound, 1-benzyl-4-phenyl-1H-1,2,3-triazole (BPT), was shown to be a successful green organic corrosion inhibitor for mild steel. Studies suggested that the BPT adsorbs chemically onto the steel and acts as a mixed inhibitor, suppressing both the anodic and cathodic corrosion kinetics of steel. In addition, microcapsules have shown to be an efficient way for a controlled inhibitor release in reinforced concrete structures. On the other hand, geopolymers (GPs) comprised of a long range of covalently bonded alumino-silicates, …
