Critical Evaluation Of The Effects Of Changes Made To Roughing Filters Of Mpira-Balaka Plant On Its Treatment And Operational Performance, C Zulu
Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)
Mpira Balaka, a full scale rural water supply project was constructed in Ntcheu, Malawi, in 1988 utilising Slow Sand Filtration (SSF) as the main treatment process and roughing filtration as the pretreatment method, following the promo- tion of this technology by various international institutions. During the rainy seasons, the treatment plant for Mpira Balaka failed to cope with the high raw water turbidity, resulting into very short filter run times and hence also to unavoidable distribution Of very turbid water to the rural communi- ties as a result Of by-passing the filters. Of the fifty or so existing rural projects in …
A Conceptual Approach To Water Resources Management For A Catchment In Tanzania, F Mwanuzi
A Conceptual Approach To Water Resources Management For A Catchment In Tanzania, F Mwanuzi
Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)
In hydrology/Water resources, normally rainfall data are available for longer periods than runoff data. Many attempts have been made to extend these runoff data by using system approach and conceptual models. The conceptual approach to simulate runoff at the outlet ofa catchment is based on the physical processes involved in the transformation of rainfall into runoff (river flow). In this paper a conceptual model, (SEAMOD) has been used. This model has a limited number of parameters to optimize when compared to other models like the sacramental model. Also it requires less input data. The model assumes that the storage is …

Contamination sites associated with light non-aqueous phase liquids {LNAPL) are numerous and represent difficult cleanup problems. Remediation methods for cleanup of LNAPL fluids in subsurface systems are continuously evolving with the development of various technologies for pump.-and~treat, soil venting, and in-situ bioremediation. Evaluating the effectiveness of remediation techniques as well as attempting to improve their efficiency has been a focus of many researchers, These efforts have included the development of computer simulation models to predict and analyze the fluid movement, entrapment, and mobilization of three~phase systems in porous media. The capability of computer models that not only simulate but optimize …

Comparison Of The Dynamic Behavior Of Composite Plates And Shells Incorporating Green's Strain Terms With The Von Karman And Donnell Models, Arthur E. Forral
Comparison Of The Dynamic Behavior Of Composite Plates And Shells Incorporating Green's Strain Terms With The Von Karman And Donnell Models, Arthur E. Forral
Theses and Dissertations
The dynamic collapse behavior of thin, composite cylindrical shells subjected to transverse point loads is considered. The dynamic behavior of the undamped cylindrical shells of varying radii is analyzed with a finite element formulation that incorporates all nonlinear Green's strain terms in the in-plane directions; transverse strains are linear and vary parabolically through the shell thickness. This formulation is denoted as the simplified large displacement/rotation (SLR) theory. Graphical representations are used extensively to examine dynamic behaviors not noted in similar research that utilized the DSHELL finite element code. Composite plate behavior is also explored. Comparison of the higher-order formulations to …
The Effect Of Cutout Dimensionality On The Collapse Characteristics Of Cylindrical Composite Shells Of Varying Thickness, John C. Del Barga
The Effect Of Cutout Dimensionality On The Collapse Characteristics Of Cylindrical Composite Shells Of Varying Thickness, John C. Del Barga
Theses and Dissertations
This study involved a numerical and experimental investigation of the (geometric instability of graphite/epoxy cylindrical panels with free vertical edges undergoing axial compression. Symmetric quasi-isotropic laminates with five different size centralized cutouts, were investigated for two axial lengths of panels and three thicknesses. The study compared experimental data to results from SHELL, a geometrically nonlinear finite-element program which incorporates a parabolic transverse shear strain distribution through the thickness. The research verified that the SHELL program will provide good predictions of the collapse characteristics of a panel with large cutouts of varying dimensions undergoing large displacements and rotations. The best correlation …

Development Of Computer Software To Aid Environmental Decision Makers In The Education And Training Of Air Force Remedial Project Managers, Roger R. Ouellette, Bruce K. Lyman
Theses and Dissertations
By the end of Fiscal Year 1991, the Air Force had identified 4,354 contaminated sites. Much like the 177 toxic sites at McClellan AFB, bases across the country and throughput the world are filled with chrome, lead, paint solvents and many other toxics that are rendering water supplies unusable and endangering the health of millions of people living in and around these bases. Air Force officials continue to identify contaminated sites with no end in sight. Since the cleanup of these toxic materials involves diverse, complex activities, the Air Force created the duty position of Remedial Project Manager to manage …

Selection Of Design Strengths Of Untreated Soil Subgrades And Subgrades Treated With Cement And Hydrated Lime, David Q. Hunsucker, Tony L. Beckham
Selection Of Design Strengths Of Untreated Soil Subgrades And Subgrades Treated With Cement And Hydrated Lime, David Q. Hunsucker, Tony L. Beckham
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
Selection of design strengths of soil subgrades and subgrades treated with cement or hydrated lime is a problem in pavement design analysis and construction because a variety of different types of soils may exist in a highway corridor and a wide range of different strengths may exist after the soils are compacted to form the pavement subgrade. The selected subgrade strength will largely affect the pavement thickness obtained from the design analysis, the future pavement performances, and the overall bearing capacities of the subgrade during construction and the pavement structure after construction. In developing the proposed selection scheme, a newly …

Performance Of The Crash Cushion Attenuating Terminal (Cat) In Traffic Accidents, Kenneth R. Agent, Jerry G. Pigman
Performance Of The Crash Cushion Attenuating Terminal (Cat) In Traffic Accidents, Kenneth R. Agent, Jerry G. Pigman
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
The objective of this study was to report the results of the continued monitoring of the performance of the Crash Cushion Attenuating Terminal (CAT) in traffic accidents.
The documented performance of the CAT system in traffic accidents justifies additional use. A recommended location would be at median piers and bridge abutments in narrow medians. While accidents involving this system should continue to be evaluated, this evaluation results in the conclusion that the CAT system could be classified as operational.
The performance of the CAT system indicates a couple of areas which should be addressed. For installations in a raised median, …

Pavement Drainage And Pavement Shoulder Joint Evaluation Numerical Analysis Of Infiltration And Drainage In Pavement Systems, Reynaldo David. Espinoza, Philippe L. Bourdeau, Thomas D. White
JTRP Technical Reports
The continuing loss of pavement performance observed in the U.S. transportation infrastructure system raises the issue of the subdrainage design. Experience with the Indiana highways indicates that the lack of adequa the sub-drainage is probably a major cause of pavement distress. In order to provide highway engineers with a methodology to analyze the water migration and drainage into pavement systems a new numerical model has been developed. The numerical scheme is a finite difference formulation of the equations of water flow in unsaturated porous media. The resulting system of equations used is nonlinear and state-of-the-art numerical techniques have been used …

An innovative approach is presented to minimize pumping for immobilizing a floating plume of a light non-aqueous phase liquid (LNAPL). The best pumping strategy is determined to contain the free oil product and provide for gradient control of the water table. This approach combined detailed simulation, statistical analysis, and optimization. This modeling technique uses regression equations that describe system response to variable pumping stimuli. The regression equations were developed from analysis of systematically performed simulations of multiphase flow in an areal region of an unconfined aquifer. Simulations were performed using ARMOS, a finite element model. ARMOS can be used simulate …

Attachment Systems For Curtain Wall Construction And Maintenance Requirements, Peter S. Donaghy
Attachment Systems For Curtain Wall Construction And Maintenance Requirements, Peter S. Donaghy
Theses
Curtain Wall construction has become a familiar and widely used method for enclosing structures. Since the 1950's this type of enclosure has become increasingly the most popular choice of Designers and Builders. During this period of development, however, acceptable and uniform building standards have not evolved to create adequate quality control.
This thesis investigates some of the design requirements of Curtain Walls, in particular the attachment system, and the maintenance costs that are directly related to the attachment system and the consequences of such failures.
Seismic Code Analysis Of Buildings Without Locating Centers Of Rigidity, Rakesh K. Goel, Anil K. Chopra
Seismic Code Analysis Of Buildings Without Locating Centers Of Rigidity, Rakesh K. Goel, Anil K. Chopra
Civil and Environmental Engineering
Static force procedures of most building codes require that the lateral earthquake force at each floor level of an asymmetric-plan building be applied eccentrically from the centers of rigidity. To implement such procedures, it seemed necessary in the past to determine the locations of the centers of rigidity, an often confusing and cumbersome process. This paper presents a new approach for code lateral force analysis of asymmetric-plan buildings without locating the centers of rigidity. This procedure combines the results from three static analyses, which can be implemented directly on most commercially available computer programs for analysis of multistory buidings. The …

Evaluation Of Lime Stabilized Subgrade (Aa-19), Bobby W. Meade, David L. Allen
Evaluation Of Lime Stabilized Subgrade (Aa-19), Bobby W. Meade, David L. Allen
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
Construction of Section 19 of the Ashland-Alexandria Highway began in 1987. Because native soils have very low CBR values (1 to 3), it was decided to stabilize the soil subgrade with an application of 6% hydrated lime. The top 6 inches of the subgrade was to be stabilized. This process had not been previously used in Kentucky; and consequently, a research study was initiated to monitor this project. Objectives of the study were to monitor and document construction procedures, to determine the engineering characteristics of the treated subgrade through laboratory testing, and to report on the study findings. A substantial …
Survey Of The Impacts Of Environmental Regulations On State Highway Operations, Theodore Hopwood Ii, Christopher M. Oberst
Survey Of The Impacts Of Environmental Regulations On State Highway Operations, Theodore Hopwood Ii, Christopher M. Oberst
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
In recent years, the transportation industry in Kentucky as represented by Kentuckians for Better Transportation (KBT) and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KyTC), have expressed concern over the growing impact of environmental regulations upon transportation activities in the state. The imposition of environmental regulations has resulted in higher costs for new construction and maintenance on roads, project delays, scheduling and financing difficulties, and the creation of additional transportation agency bureaucracy to address environmental regulation mandates. In Kentucky, the impacts of those regulations have not been thoroughly assessed nor have the attendant costs been measured. Coinciding with that lack of information is …
