Capacity Reduction Factors For Steel Beam Ends With Holes, Kevin Saleh Makubuli
Capacity Reduction Factors For Steel Beam Ends With Holes, Kevin Saleh Makubuli
Masters Theses
The presence of holes at steel beam ends can decrease the nominal resistance (capacity) of beam ends. Codes such as AASHTO LRFD and AISC include equations for evaluating the nominal resistance of steel beam ends. While these equations are appropriate for as-designed beam ends, they may not apply to deteriorated beam ends, such as those with holes. Thus, this study aims to develop procedures to calculate the capacity of steel beam ends with holes. First, the FEA of an as-designed beam is performed for capacity evaluation (numerical result). The latter is compared with the analytical result (as-designed beam capacity) to …
Investigating The Dynamic Rating Method: Effects Of Flood Wave Geometry On Discharge Estimation, Daniel James Read
Investigating The Dynamic Rating Method: Effects Of Flood Wave Geometry On Discharge Estimation, Daniel James Read
Masters Theses
Rating curves are a vital tool to convert from observed stage to discharge in streamflow monitoring. Most gaging sites utilize a simple rating curve, which assumes a monotonic relationship between stage and discharge. In most cases, this assumption is valid; however, dynamic effects of flood waves often cause significant error in discharge estimation for mildly sloped streams. The dynamic rating method utilizes a numerical solution of the St. Venant Equations applied to time series stage data to compute discharge. Within this method, there is a flood wave parameter called the flood wave factor. The researchers designed a formal computational model …

Evaluating Psychosocial Stressors And Mental Well-Being Of Construction Professionals From The Management Standpoint: An Exploratory Study, Md Tauhidul Karim
Masters Theses
Construction professionals face persistent workplace stressors that undermine their mental well-being outcomes. Despite progress in general job-related stressors, social and interpersonal aspects of psychosocial stressors traditionally remain underexplored in the construction management research. The present study examines how social and interpersonal factors influence construction workers’ mental well-being and how management’s awareness, responsiveness, and strategic roles evolved in the transition of the COVID-19 pandemic at the organizational level. An integrative mixed-methods approach was employed, combining a systematic literature review, a bibliometric analysis, and an exploratory case study to capture the current landscape of mental well-being and management standpoints in the US …
Fire Fossils: Biomineral Infrastructures In Untangling Climates, Tanmayee More
Fire Fossils: Biomineral Infrastructures In Untangling Climates, Tanmayee More
Masters Theses
Diatoms drift, sediments sink, wildfires generate their own weather. Lightning strikes can blast sand into glass, and microscopic organisms do the same in the cold recesses of the ocean. What alchemies and metabolisms catalyze space, time, and energy? What are the thermodynamics of infrastructure in Climate Change?
Places, materials, and beings are afterimages. Through alchemical experiments, and multi-scalar imaging, I develop simulations of wildfires, and their profound, reverberating effects. In this thesis, a glass-meets-landscape experimental process enters these obscured conditions and renders new material relations for the built environment.
Bond Behavior Of Magnesium Potassium Phosphate Cement (Mkpc) Coating For Steel Reinforcement, Eric Williams
Bond Behavior Of Magnesium Potassium Phosphate Cement (Mkpc) Coating For Steel Reinforcement, Eric Williams
Masters Theses
"This research investigates the bond behavior of magnesium potassium phosphate cement (MKPC) coated mild steel deformed bars in conventional concrete and concrete repair materials. For typical steel reinforcement in concrete, a thin “passive layer” develops around the reinforcement, which protects the reinforcement from corrosion. The concrete carbonates over time, reducing the protection of the passive layer and allowing chlorides, which corrode the reinforcement, to penetrate at an increasing rate. In some cases, to combat this corrosion, a protective layer is added to the reinforcement prior to installation. Common protective layers include epoxy coatings or zinc galvanization. MKPC is a novel …

System Design For Highly Accurate And Efficient Target Detection In Triaxial Testing, Qingqing Fu
Masters Theses
Accurate and automated recognition of coded targets is crucial for high-precision photogrammetry-based measurements in triaxial testing. Traditional recognition methods, including those based on deep learning and table decoding, often struggle with issues such as perspective distortion, rotation, and variable lighting, leading to unreliable results. While deep learning approaches offer some improvements, they remain computationally intensive and sensitive to environmental factors.
This thesis introduces an innovative system that replaces deep learning algorithms with a blob analysis-based method for efficient and robust recognition of coded targets. The system also employs newly designed solid points of varying sizes and patterns, eliminating the need …

Gfrp Reinforced Bridge Barriers: Experiment Testing, Manish Kumar Gadhe
Masters Theses
This study focused on evaluating the performance of concrete bridge barriers reinforced with Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) compared to those reinforced with conventional mild steel. Four full-scale barriers were constructed, three using GFRP bars as the reinforcement and one with mild steel reinforcement. These were cast on two concrete slabs to ensure consistent support conditions. The use of GFRP aims to address durability concerns associated with steel reinforced concrete (RC), particularly corrosion of these bars in harsh environments.
To simulate real-world impact scenarios, a weighted cart was launched at each barrier using a guided sled system. Sensors, including load …

Assessment Of Pedestrian Safety At Roundabout Slip Lanes: A Study On Design Configurations And Surrogate Safety Measures, Norran Kakama Novat
Masters Theses
The implementation of slip lanes at roundabouts has been widely adopted to improve traffic flow and reduce vehicle conflicts. However, the presence of slip lanes introduces significant risks for pedestrians, influencing vehicle speeds, merging behaviors, and increasing the potential for pedestrian-vehicle conflicts. This study investigates pedestrian safety at roundabouts with various slip lane designs, focusing on their impact on vehicle speeds, pedestrian-vehicle conflicts, and yielding behavior. Also, the study evaluates commonly used surrogate safety measures by employing extreme value models to assess their efficiency.
The study addresses two primary objectives: (1) analyzing the effects of different slip lane configurations on …

Development Of A Particulate Matter Sensor Network For Air Quality Monitoring In Indoor Settings And In Mines, Abdulrahman Bani
Masters Theses
"The importance of indoor air quality (IAQ), especially concerning particulate matter (PM), has become increasingly recognized due to its substantial impact on public health. Individuals spend a significant portion of their time indoors, where PM concentrations can exceed that of outdoors, leading to potential adverse health effects ranging from immediate irritation to long-term respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. The dynamic nature of indoor environments, combined with the diversity of PM sources, presents considerable challenges for effective IAQ monitoring and management. Traditional approaches to IAQ assessment often fall short, lacking the granularity and immediacy required to address these challenges adequately.

Investigating Disparities And Safety Equity In Pedestrian Nighttime Crashes In Michigan, Sia Isaria Mwende
Masters Theses
For the past eleven years (2011 - 2021) in Michigan, 76 percent of all fatal pedestrian crashes occurred at night. Over the same period, about 36 percent of pedestrian nighttime crashes were fatal or incapacitating (KA), while only 25 percent of daytime pedestrian crashes were fatal or incapacitating (KA). Previous studies suggest that, overall, poor neighborhoods and racial minorities are associated with more pedestrian crashes. With more fatal and incapacitating pedestrian crashes occurring at night, it is imperative to examine how these crashes are distributed by economic status and racial makeup. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the racial and …
Designing Exterior Lighting For Safety And Comfort While Minimizing Light Pollution, Energy Consumption, And Cost, Stephen Michael Simmons
Designing Exterior Lighting For Safety And Comfort While Minimizing Light Pollution, Energy Consumption, And Cost, Stephen Michael Simmons
Masters Theses
"Artificial light at night brings many benefits to society. However, these benefits do not come without costs. One environmental issue that is often overlooked in the design of public spaces and infrastructure is light pollution. At the expense of large amounts of energy, light pollution causes numerous harmful effects on human health, ecosystems, and the night sky. Today, the problem is becoming more widespread, especially with the increasing use of bright, white LED luminaires. Thus, it is imperative for designers and engineers to create smarter lighting designs that not only allow for safety and comfort at night but also promote …

A Network Of Low-Cost Multi-Pollutant Air Quality Sensors For Evaluating Fine-Scale Exposure Disparity In Twin Cities, Mn, P M Varuni Abhayaratne
Masters Theses
"Poor air quality is detrimental to health and is a leading environmental risk factor for early death globally. The massive scale of urbanization and population growth has led urban air quality to become a global concern as the release of air pollutants into the atmosphere continues to increase. Air quality has traditionally been monitored using reference-grade monitoring stations that are expensive and sparsely distributed. Low-cost sensors can complement existing regulatory networks to provide more spatial detail, capturing fine-scale variations. This study investigates spatiotemporal pollutant patterns, exposure disparities and environmental justice using data collected from a two-year (2019-2021) deployment of a …

Rapid-Throughput Analysis Of 1,4-Dioxane In Plants By Centrifugal Sampling And Phytoforensic Analysis For Site Delineation And Assessing Enhanced Rhizodegradation, Anthony Eberechukwu Oha
Masters Theses
"Owing to its broad use and environmental persistence, 1,4-dioxane (dioxane) poses a notable threat to public health and is recalcitrant to traditional remedial systems. Dioxane moves readily in an aqueous environment and is an emerging contaminant in drinking water, surface water, groundwater, and wastewater. The extent of dioxane in the biosphere is also difficult to delineate, particularly in the subsurface. Phytoremediation has demonstrated the potential for dioxane groundwater remediation. Recent findings indicate that plant-microbial symbiosis may be more advantageous for limiting potential transport and transfer into plant tissues and the atmosphere. Bioaugmentation of the rhizosphere paired with soil amendments has …

The bubbling method is then introduced in upcycling the municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) ashes, and the effects of the upcycled MSWI ashes on the hydration of Portland cement is investigated. Experimental results illustrate that the COâ‚‚ bubbling method can produce nanometer-to-sub- micron-sized calcite particles, and the synthesis rate and the morphology of the nano-calcite …
Assessing Phenotypic Response Of Plants Irrigated With Municipal Solid Waste Landfill Leachate Using Computer Visualization, Rahel Pommerenke
Assessing Phenotypic Response Of Plants Irrigated With Municipal Solid Waste Landfill Leachate Using Computer Visualization, Rahel Pommerenke
Masters Theses
"Most solid waste collected in the US is disposed of in sanitary landfills, which have a lingering legacy of unintended negative impacts on the environment. Landfill design and operation are expensive, prone to multiple failure modes, and often do not address human and ecological risks presented by contaminants of emerging concern. A notable and common failure mechanism is leachate production. Moisture in the waste mixes with infiltrating water to form wastewater that must be collected and treated prior to discharge. Recycling leachate at landfills by recirculating it onto vegetated landfill covers relies on the evapotranspiration potential of plants to reduce …

This work proposed an energy management framework that integrated unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with air quality sensors for early wildfire detection and forest monitoring. …
Effect Of Spike Anchors On The Bond Behavior Of Steel Reinforced Polymer Composite Externally Bonded To A Concrete Substrate, Keenan Lorence Mcburney
Effect Of Spike Anchors On The Bond Behavior Of Steel Reinforced Polymer Composite Externally Bonded To A Concrete Substrate, Keenan Lorence Mcburney
Masters Theses
Steel reinforced polymer (SRP) composites are a strengthening material that consist of continuous high-strength steel cords embedded in a polymeric matrix. SRP has demonstrated a high potential for providing additional flexural and shear strength in existing concrete structures when bonded to the concrete surface. However, premature debonding from the concrete substrate at low load levels is a major shortcoming of SRP composites. It has been demonstrated in previous studies that anchors can limit the effect of debonding in fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites by increasing the load capacity and ductility of the composite-concrete interface.
This study aims to investigate the …
Axial Performance Of Self-Consolidating Concrete-Filled Fiber Tubes, Joshua David Carter
Axial Performance Of Self-Consolidating Concrete-Filled Fiber Tubes, Joshua David Carter
Masters Theses
"Concrete filled fiber tubes can be used to increase ductility and strength of a concrete member and self-consolidating concrete is an ideal material to use in practical applications of concrete-filled fiber tubular columns. However, the propensity of self-consolidating concrete to autogenous shrinkage could reduce the effectiveness of the concrete confinement. This research investigates the use of self-consolidating concrete in pre-cast FRP tubes and various methods of shrinkage reduction and compensation to increase the axial performance of said self-consolidating concrete-filled fiber tubes. Axial compression tests were performed under monotonic and cyclic conditions to determine the stress-strain relationship of the self-consolidating concrete …

An operation room is a critical environment when it comes to the safety of patients undergoing surgery. There are a lot of factors that go into reducing Surgical Site Infections (SSI) following a surgery. This comes in the form of cleaning standards, surgical practices, but also environment controls. The characteristics of airflow within an operation room are related to the risk of an SSI. Some of these factors are temperature, velocity, and turbulent air around an open wound which could increase the chance of bacteria or other particles entering the very vulnerable patient. As clean room standards continue to be …

Vehicle Performance Analysis Of An Autonomous Electric Shuttle Modified For Wheelchair Accessibility, Johan Fanas Rojas
Vehicle Performance Analysis Of An Autonomous Electric Shuttle Modified For Wheelchair Accessibility, Johan Fanas Rojas
Masters Theses
Autonomous vehicles (AV) have the potential to vastly improve independent, safe, and cost-effective mobility options for individuals with disabilities. However, accessibility considerations are often overlooked in the early stages of design, resulting in AVs that are inaccessible to people with disabilities. The needs of wheeled mobility device users can cause significant vehicle design changes due to requirements for stepless ingress/egress and increased space for onboard circulation and securement. Vehicles serving people with disabilities typically require costly aftermarket modifications for accessibility, which may have unforeseen impacts on vehicle performance and safety, particularly in the case of automated vehicles. In this research, …

“Designing and controlling open channel flows presents many challenges. One such challenge is energy dissipation. This challenge is currently addressed by several means, including the use of honeycomb structures. Energy dissipation by honeycomb structures has been studied for pressurized conduit flows; however, their ability to dissipate energy in free-surface flows remains largely unexamined. This work introduces a comprehensive experimental study designed to estimate the energy dissipation through a honeycomb structure in a free-surface flow.
This work examined the energy dissipation for a range of flows, pipe lengths, and pipe diameters in two flumes. PVC pipes ranging from 6 inches to …
