The district, as it now stands, is very much in need of many improvements. The development of artesian and pumped wells as a source of irrigation water has created the need for a measuring device which will be accurate for small discharges. The thin edged weir has been accepted as one of the most accurate and desirable measuring devices for this work. Three types of weirs are now commonly used: the Rectangular, the Cipolleti, and the Triangular Notch weir. Of these types the triangular notch is probably best suited for small discharges (under 3 second feet). "The so-termed: "Multiple", or "Scallop-Arched" dam, as its name implies, is one composed of a series of arches, either semi-circular or segmental in plan. These arches were first vertical but were later inclined downstream, when the engineers recognized the value of the weight of water in increasing the resisting moment. The thrust of these arches, due to the water pressure and the weight of the arch itself, is transmitted directly to the buttresses. This includes the securing of 139 water samples from water sources in the Rolla Quadrangle, and inoculating 1cc samples from these into Dunham's Lactose tubes and thereby getting lactose gas production checks on the field samples. One needs but to review the history of the irrigated projects of the West to see clearly the importance of drainage. Since the passing of the Reclamation Act in 1902, the construction of drainage work by the United States Reclamation Service on seventeen projects located in thirteen western states represents about 12 percent of the expenditures from the Reclamation Fund. The portion for drainage has been spent during the last few years. This work has required an annual expenditure of about $1,000,000 or a total of $8,000,000 to July, 1922⁽¹⁾.
