Recrystallization Of High Purity Aluminum, Virgil H. Griswold Jr. May 1953

Recrystallization Of High Purity Aluminum, Virgil H. Griswold Jr.

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

If a metal is first cold-worked and then heated to a sufficient temperature for an adequate length of time, the hardening properties due to cold-working disappear, and the metal will return more or less to its original state. Upon examination of the microstructure, we find that new grains have replaced the old grains through what is called recrystallization. The final size of the recrystallized grains depends upon three important variables--the degree of cold-work or deformation, annealing temperature, and annealing time.

A Study Of The Effects Of The Chloride Ion On The Lead-Silver Anodes And On The Lead Tenor Of The Zinc Deposit In Zinc Electrolysis, William A. Mitchell May 1953

A Study Of The Effects Of The Chloride Ion On The Lead-Silver Anodes And On The Lead Tenor Of The Zinc Deposit In Zinc Electrolysis, William A. Mitchell

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

The electrolyte used in the commercial production of electrolytic zinc from zinc sulphate solutions contains small amounts of impurities each of which has its own effects upon the process. Impurities such as antimony, cobalt, nickel, and iron tend to lower the current efficiency while other impurities such as chlorine, fluorine, and nitrates tend to increase the corrosion of the lead anodes and thereby increase the lead tenor of the zinc deposit.

The Precipitation Of Calcium Tungstate From Sodium Tungstate Solution, Martin E. Messner May 1953

The Precipitation Of Calcium Tungstate From Sodium Tungstate Solution, Martin E. Messner

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

In view of the great need for tungsten in the present industrial world it is necessary that all known tungsten sourves be utilized to the greatest possible extent. Scheelite ores promise to be an increasingly important source of tungsten, inasmuch as the discovery of vast new deposits has been made and known deposits of high grade ores have practically been depleted.

The Effect Of Manganese On The Age Hardening Of Aluminum-Copper Alloys, Keith P. Burgess May 1953

The Effect Of Manganese On The Age Hardening Of Aluminum-Copper Alloys, Keith P. Burgess

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

It is known that age-hardening occurs in alloys of the solid solution type containing a hardening constituent, of a metal or metallic compound which is more soluble in the solvent phase at higher tempertures than at lower temperatures.

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

The increasing importance of tungsten as an industrial metal and the recent discoveries of extensive deposits of low-grade tungsten ores in Montana led to the investigation which is reported in this paper. The purpose of this investigation was to determine if a saleable concentrate could be obtained from one of these low-grade, Montana scheelite ores.

Drainage Of The Logan-Hyde Park-Benson Area, Utah, Gordon H. Flammer May 1953

Drainage Of The Logan-Hyde Park-Benson Area, Utah, Gordon H. Flammer

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

B.A. Etcheverry (4) in his book, Land Drainage and Flood Protection, states that inadequate drainage causes: (1) a public health menace, (2) an animal health menace, (3) lower grade plant life, (4) inadequate soil saturation, (5) lower soil temperatures, (6) shallow root penetration and, therefore, plant suffering in late summer months from effects of drought, (7) poor soil texture and workability, (8) increased surface washing and erosion of land surface, and (9) alkali and saline conditions. Other factors such as poorer roads and highways, decreased tax revenues, etc., might be added to this list. The advantages of adequate drainage …

Consumptive Use Of Water By Major Farm Crops In The Milford District Of Utah, Glen H. Calder May 1953

Consumptive Use Of Water By Major Farm Crops In The Milford District Of Utah, Glen H. Calder

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Irrigation water supplies in the arid West have become limited, yet the area of irrigable land is still extensive. To realize the more efficient use of the available supply, or for planning new irrigation projects, studies are needed to determine how much water is consumptively used by farm crops and native vegetation.

Oil Shales In Montana, Richard N. Miller Feb 1953

Oil Shales In Montana, Richard N. Miller

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

Montana has long been known to have very large resources of coal and oil, and undetermined amounts of oil shale. The reserves of coal and oil have been proven, in part, and have been produced commercially, but not much is known about the extent and apparent value of the oil shales. Under present .conditions, and according to standards set by the United States Bureau of Mines, the shales are not of commercial value. They are, however, a potentially valuable mineral resource, and portions of them will possibly be utilized, although not in the near future.

Application Of Geology To Highway Engineering In Kentucky, L. E. Gregg, James H. Havens Feb 1953

Application Of Geology To Highway Engineering In Kentucky, L. E. Gregg, James H. Havens

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Kentucky, too, is a state where geology abounds. Little credit for this, however, lies with the highway field, because such a prosaic subject is frequently overshadowed by such features as Mammoth Cave, Sky Bridge, Cumberland Falls, Pine Mountain, and extensive underground mineral deposits. Nevertheless; the influence of geology in the highway industry is growing, and it is obvious that some potential contributions have not yet been realized.

A Combination Waterbound Macadam And Dense-Graded Aggregate Base For Flexible Pavements, William B. Drake Jan 1953

A Combination Waterbound Macadam And Dense-Graded Aggregate Base For Flexible Pavements, William B. Drake

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

This paper is concerned with a flexible base designed primarily to improve the riding qualities of high-type bituminous pavements. Difficulties in control of grades and sections with modern methods of macadam base construction have emphasized needs for effective finishing procedures.

In the project described, an 8-in. base was built in two courses, the lower waterbound macadam being overlain by a densegraded aggregate material suitable for spreading and shaping with a power grader. The base was then surfaced with two courses of a hot bituminous plant mix.

Observations and measurements showed that the combination could be built satisfactorily; construction entailed more …
