Status Report On Landslide Area On I-75, Covington, Kentucky [May 1963], Robert C. Deen

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

This report has been prepared to describe the history and present condition of a landslide area on Interstate Route I-75 in Covington, Kentucky, This landslide is one of several to be studied as part of a research project on the "Development of a Practical Method of Locating and Tracing Seepage Water in Unstable Slopes. " On April 10, 1963, a request was submitted to the Bureau of Public Roads to change the Work Program HPS-1(24) to include this research project. Approval was received on May 2, 1963. Work done on this research project prior to May 2 was at Department …

Utah State University Stilling Basin Pipe Flow To Open Channels, Hameed Rasheed May 1963

Utah State University Stilling Basin Pipe Flow To Open Channels, Hameed Rasheed

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Energy dissipation problems are often encountered where pipelines discharge into open channels. Normal pipe flow velocities most often result in super-critical velocities in canals. These high velocities may cause scour, overtopping, and unstable flow in the channel.

The principal objective of the study was to find an efficient and economical design of a stilling basin transition from pipe flow to open channels. Pertinent variables were selected and their effects determined by extensive experimentation.

An efficient stilling basin was developed utilizing a short dissipator pipe on the wall opposite the inflow pipe. The optimum diameter, length, and differential elevation between center …

Experimental Use Of Thermo-Plastic Pavement-Striping Materials, James H. Havens Apr 1963

Experimental Use Of Thermo-Plastic Pavement-Striping Materials, James H. Havens

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The purposes and objectives of this experimental study are: 1) to evaluate the application and performance characteristics of hot-melt plastic, pavement-striping materials which are presently prominent and known commercially as "Catatherm" and "Perma-Line"; 2) to compare the performance of these materials with the performance of painted stripes applied and re-newed according to the current practices of the Kentucky Department of Highways; and 3) to evaluate the economics of these striping materials in terms of cost-per-mile per-day-of-useful-life, The project is described more fully in the "Proposal... " (approved by Division Engineer, September 7, 1962) and in Report No. 1 (Pre-Construction Report) …

Planning And Financing County Bridge Programs, Jean E. Hittle, D. G. Shurig Mar 1963

Planning And Financing County Bridge Programs, Jean E. Hittle, D. G. Shurig

Indiana Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) Publications

This manual has been developed to review several different areas of information related to county bridge improvement programs, including (1) the authority and jurisdiction over county bridges (Section II), (2) the various sources of funds for construction and repair of county bridges (Section III) , and (3) the fiscal process of making appropriations and expenditures for construction and repair of bridges (Section VI). These topics are presented in terms of the current Indiana statutes, and for this reason should be of considerable assistance to county road officials as a guide to the official duties of their office.

The Performance Of Beams And Columns Continuously Braced With Diaphragms, George Pincus, Gordon P. Fisher Feb 1963

The Performance Of Beams And Columns Continuously Braced With Diaphragms, George Pincus, Gordon P. Fisher

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

INTRODUCTION In Progress Report No.1, it was reported that the initial conception of the problem was that diaphragms act almost exclusively in shear when called upon to brace compression members, and that it had been decided to test single columns with finite widths of diaphragm attached, with width of the sheet being varied to provide a range of lateral support up to that which permitted full column strength, based on strong axis to be developed. However, the first test of this kind, Test CB-l, clearly indicated that the diaphragm acted essentially in flexure only and thus had the same effect …

Some Effects Of Fabrication Practices On The Strength Characteristics Of Reinforced Concrete Culvert Pipe, Robert C. Deen, James H. Havens Feb 1963

Some Effects Of Fabrication Practices On The Strength Characteristics Of Reinforced Concrete Culvert Pipe, Robert C. Deen, James H. Havens

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Underground conduits have been used for hundreds of years for drainage and water supply purposes. With the advent of railway and auto-mobile transportation, the use of underground conduits for drainage purposes beneath the roadways increased greatly. It soon became apparent that there was a definite need for knowledge concerning the manufacture, installation, and field behavior of pipe culverts. Accordingly, in the first half of the century, much attention and research has been directed toward the development and establishment of acceptable techniques and specifications fot the manufacture and installation of pipe culverts. This work has been accomplished by many individuals and …

Concrete, Bridge Decks: Deterioration, Coatings And Repairs, James H. Havens, William B. Drake Feb 1963

Concrete, Bridge Decks: Deterioration, Coatings And Repairs, James H. Havens, William B. Drake

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

This report is not wholly a culmination of a planned or programmed research project. It is a historical account of damage sustained by both new and old concrete bridge-decks -- through freeze-thaw, salt action, etc, -- and of some expedient repairs which have been effected. The problem of durability in concrete bridge-decks has become increasingly critical during the past ten years or so and is now a major concern to highway engineers throughout the northern tier of states. While there is not yet a concerted agreement in regard to the cause of the trouble, relief is being sought through improved …

Land Preparation For Border Irrigation, B Swan Jan 1963

Land Preparation For Border Irrigation, B Swan

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

LARGE amounts of water may be lost through excess run-off and deep percolation.

Proper preparation of irrigation land can help to minimise these losses.

This preparation is done by grading or levelling so that the original ground surface is shaped to allow for a more uniform distribution of water.

Swing Fence Flood Crossing For Creeks In The Kimberleys, A L. Payne Jan 1963

Swing Fence Flood Crossing For Creeks In The Kimberleys, A L. Payne

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

FENCING is the basis of the regeneration programme on the eroded Ord River catchment area, and the fences constructed must cross numerous creeks.

But heavy downpours of short duration characterise the wet season experienced in this area.

Because the rain falls on to bare, compacted ground, run-off is intense and gullies and creeks rise rapidly, causing serious damage to conventional fences and flood gates across watercourses.
