Planning New Farm Dams : Excavated Earth Tanks, J E. Watson, J. C. Grasby

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

A GOOD farm dam is a valuable asset, and well worth its cost, but there are many aspects to consider when a new dam is required. Careful planning with adequate testing and checking will help to get the best value for money and reduce the chance of costly failures.

This article discusses these aspects in relation to the excavated earth tank type of dam.

The Effect Of Metallic And Inert Electrodes On The Electrochemical Degradation Of Alkyl Benzene Sulfonate., Thomas Patrick O'Farrell Jan 1964

The Effect Of Metallic And Inert Electrodes On The Electrochemical Degradation Of Alkyl Benzene Sulfonate., Thomas Patrick O'Farrell

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of various metallic and inert electrode combinations on the electrochemical degradation of alkyl benzene sulfonates (ABS) in water and to determine the rate and degree of AB3 removal.

Selected combinations of copper, aluminum, iron, and carbon plate electrodes were studied in systems of tap, distilled and river waters containing an initial ABS concentration of 10 mg/1, using a current density of approximately 0.5 milliamperes per square centimeter and a total detention time of 6 hours. Samples were collected at appropriate time intervals and were analyzed for ABS, chemical oxygen demand …

Design Parameters For Fuel Batteries Operating In A Zero G Field, A. P. Hardt, Harold M. Cota, J. L. Fick, T. Katan

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Some design parameters of a hydrazine-oxygen fuel battery operating in a zero G field are described in a digital computer programming treatment. The power balance for a battery employing a gas-producing electrode and an electrolyte pump is treated; optimum power densities and flow rates are established.

Status Report On Landslide Area On I-75, Covington, Kentucky [August 1963], Robert C. Deen

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

This report has been prepared to describe the conditions of the landslide area on Interstate Route I-75 in Covington, Kentucky, since May 15, 1963, the date of an earlier status report. Subsurface data which has been collected and assembled during the past three months is also included. Possible corrective considerations have also been included in this report.

The rainfall data included in this report, as well as the previous status report (May 15, 1963), are the official 24-hour precipitation recorded by the U. S. Weather Bureau at the Greater Cincinnati Airport in Boone County, Kentucky. The airport is located approximately …

Aerial Application Of Evaporation-Reducing Chemicals, Development And Evaluation Of Equipment And Techniques, C. Earl Israelsen, Vaughn E. Hansen Jul 1963

Aerial Application Of Evaporation-Reducing Chemicals, Development And Evaluation Of Equipment And Techniques, C. Earl Israelsen, Vaughn E. Hansen

Reports

Aerial applications of both liquid and powder evaporation retardants have been made in parallel strips on large lakes for purposes of comparison. Films formed from powder spread more rapidly than did those from liquid, but usually both films ultimately spread to approximately equal widths and had the same degree of compression as determined with indicator oils. Evaporation retarding materials with large numbers of particles having diameters smaller than 75 microns are greatly affected by the wind. As the chemical is dispensed from the airplane. the fine particles drift with the wind and in some instances are carried onto the land …

The Effects Of An Epoxy (Epocast 546) Upon The Tensile And Compressive Properties Of Portland Cement Concrete, Alvy C. Jackson Jun 1963

The Effects Of An Epoxy (Epocast 546) Upon The Tensile And Compressive Properties Of Portland Cement Concrete, Alvy C. Jackson

Civil Engineering ETDs

Although the behavioral pattern of plain concrete in compression is fairly consistent, its tensile properties leave much to be desired. The laboratory investigation described here was an attempt to increase the tensile property of plain concrete by adding an epoxy resin compound to the mixture. The investigation included tests for both compressive and tensile strengths of the mixtures that were considered. The compressive strength tests were included to determine what effect, if any, the attempt to increase the tensile property had on compressive strength.

Interim Report On Rural Secondary, Base Stabilization Projects, Robert C. Deen, J. D. Shackelford Jun 1963

Interim Report On Rural Secondary, Base Stabilization Projects, Robert C. Deen, J. D. Shackelford

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Early in 1962, the Division of Rural Highways selected several base stabilization projects for construction during the 1962 season. These projects were to involve the addition of 1-1/2 to 3 inches of compacted granular base to existing, rural secondary, traffic-bound macadam roads. Since these roads were not intended to be surfaced, calcium chloride and sodium chloride were to be added to the additional granular base material in an attempt to retain or "hold" the aggregate on the road. This treatment was in tended to improve the road and to build up the base over a period of a few years …
