Design, Calibration, And Evaluation Of A Trapezoidal Measuring Flume By Model Study, M. Leon Hyatt Jan 1965

Design, Calibration, And Evaluation Of A Trapezoidal Measuring Flume By Model Study, M. Leon Hyatt

Reports

SCOPE AND PURPOSE OF INVESTIGATION

The discharge occurring in an open channel can be measured by placing a constriction in the channel. Flumes are commonly used as constriction in open channels. A flume is a specially designed and calibrated section built into a channel, the physical properties of which allow the calculation of the discharge. The narrowest section of the flume is usually called the throat. The velocity of flow through the throat, for any given flow rate, increases with a decrease in the flow depth. The ideal condition for measurement of discharge is a throat sufficiently constricted to produce …

Estimation Of Pan Evaporation From Climatological Data, Jerald Emmet Christiansen, Ashwin D. Mehta

Reports

A new formula and coefficients for climatological factors was developed for estimating pan evaporation based on an analysis of data from 23 states in the U. S. and from five other countries. This formula may be written: Ev=K R Ct Cw Ch Cs Ce Cm in which K is a dimensionless constant R is the theoretical radiation reaching the outer atmosphere, expressed as equivalent evaporation in the same units~ , as Ev. Ct, Cw, Ch,and Cs are dimensionless sub-coefficients for temperature , wind, humidity, and sunshine. Ce is a sub-coefficient for elevation, and Cm is a monthly coefficient Equations were …

Construction, Instrumentation, And Preliminary Verification Of A Physical Hydrologic Model, Donald L. Chery Jr. Jan 1965

Construction, Instrumentation, And Preliminary Verification Of A Physical Hydrologic Model, Donald L. Chery Jr.

Reports

From theoretical consideration involving a rationalized dimensional analysis of the rainfall-runoff phenomena, dimensionless products of the pertinent variables are derived. These dimensionless products guided the design and construction of a rainstorm simulator and topographic model. The design and construction of these two basic elements of the physical hydrologic model are described. A description of the instrumentation and several relevant calibration tests is followed by a discussion of two preliminary verification test sets. The tests indicated that some necessary refinements in equipment and instrumentation were needed before more precise experimental data could be obtained. Further, the tests produced results which encouraged …

Experimental Concrete Pavement Containing Fly Ash Admixtures [1965], Ronald D. Hughes Jan 1965

Experimental Concrete Pavement Containing Fly Ash Admixtures [1965], Ronald D. Hughes

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

A 2.388-mi section of four-lane highway in Louisville, Ky., was selected for an experimental fly ash concrete pavement installation. The project was divided into three sections: a control section and two experimental sections containing 94 and 140 lb of fly ash per cubic yard, respectively. The solid-volume of fly ash in excess of that required to replace one sack of cement was considered as fine aggregate. The water was adjusted to provide a slump of approximately 2½ in., and an air-entraining admixture was proportioned at the mixer to provide an air content of approximately 4.5 percent.

Beams and cylinders were …

Investigation Of The Use Of Optics In The Analysis Of Structures, Jimmy D. Hahs Jan 1965

Investigation Of The Use Of Optics In The Analysis Of Structures, Jimmy D. Hahs

Masters Theses

"This study was made to determine the feasibility of the use of optics in the analysis of structures. Since the curvature of a beam due to a loading condition is a function of the moment, a measure of this curvature is a measurement of the moment.

This study used the relationship between object size and image size formed by a concave or convex reflective surface to determine the radius of curvature and the moment at the point.

Overhanging simply supported beams of plexiglass with concentrated loads at various positions were used to demonstrate the developed optical theory. Optical measurements were …

The Effect Of Carbonate Karst Terrain On Water Quality, Robert Russell Kilgo Jan 1965

The Effect Of Carbonate Karst Terrain On Water Quality, Robert Russell Kilgo

Masters Theses

"The ever increasing use of water and unabated pollution of streams have made necessary increased research efforts into the quality and quantity of the available national water resources. Karst terrain is prevalent in several sections of the United States, however, little work has been done on the effect of this topography on water quality.

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effect of carbonate karst terrain on the quality of water. The Meramec spring area, east of Rolla, Missouri, was selected for study. This area was underlain with dolomite formations and contains both karst and non-karst drainage basins …

Comparison Of Measured And Calculated Stiffnesses For Lightweight Normal Concrete Beams, Raman Patel

Masters Theses

"This study is a presentation of the findings involving experimental measurements of stiffness (EI) for different percentages of reinforcement steel in normal and lightweight concrete beams. The experimental values of stiffness are compared with calculated values obtained by applying the standard reinforced concrete theory. The measured values of stiffness obtained by the rotation method are compared with those obtained by the deflection method. Of the thirty beams that were tested, fifteen were tested for normal concrete and the remaining fifteen for lightweight concrete. Each of these beams were tested at different ages, ranging from seven to twenty-eight days.

The test …

Warping And Curling Of Plain Concrete Slabs, Vipinbhai Ratilal Shah Jan 1965

Warping And Curling Of Plain Concrete Slabs, Vipinbhai Ratilal Shah

Masters Theses

"The study was made to determine the effect of daily atmospheric temperature variation and curing on the warping and curling of plain concrete slabs and to study the effect of moisture on the warping of plain concrete slabs under nearly constant temperature conditions, by keeping the bottom surface of one slab wet and the other dry.

Daily observations consisted of dial gage readings to determine the progressive variations in warping contours due to typical daily temperature curling. Trends were found for three months of dial gage readings and interpreted in terms of warping and curling of the slabs.

The warping …

Buckling Strength Of Titanium Alloy Columns In The Elastic And Inelastic Range, Richard O. Rintoul

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this study is to find experimentally the buckling strength of titanium alloy (Ti.-6Al.-4V.) columns and to determine a suitable equation to be used in the design of titanium columns in the elastic and inelastic range.

Effective length over radius of gyration ratios of from 178 to 16.1 were studied. High strength steel plates with cylindrical radii milled in the faces served as column ends while cylindrical radii ends were milled on the columns. SR-4 strain gages were used at the mid-points of all columns to determine lateral deflection and predict a theoretical buckling stress. Actual column loads …

The Influence Of Cation Exchange And Electrolyte Concentrations Upon The Atterberg Limits, Kent J. Schwieger Jan 1965

The Influence Of Cation Exchange And Electrolyte Concentrations Upon The Atterberg Limits, Kent J. Schwieger

Masters Theses

"The object of this investigation is to correlate relationships between cation exchange capacity, clay content, and type and concentration of the exchangeable cations upon the Atterberg limits of a soil. Synthetic soils consisting of loessial silt and either an illitic natural deposit, bentonite, ball clay, or kaolin clay were used.

As the percent clay fraction was increased the cation exchange capacity, liquid and plastic limits and plasticity index increased linearly in the clay range. Results also suggested a linear relationship between the liquid and plastic limits and the cation exchange capacity of soils of one hundred percent clay fraction"--Abstract, page …

Field Permeability Determination Of Partially Saturated Fine Grained Soil, Edward G. Rapp Jan 1965

Field Permeability Determination Of Partially Saturated Fine Grained Soil, Edward G. Rapp

Masters Theses

"The determination of water permeability through a soil is necessary to estimate seepage losses from small reservoirs. At the present time, the methods available to conduct this determination in partially saturated fine grained soils are expensive and in most cases not commensurate with the cost or importance of the individual structure. This investigation was conducted to evaluate the use of a proposed, potentially inexpensive field procedure in this situation. A modified borehole apparatus was utilized in field tests to determine the permeability of a partially saturated soil deposit in place. Undisturbed samples from the same location were tested in the …

The Shear Graph And Cohesive Soil, Charles Rees Nickerson Jan 1965

The Shear Graph And Cohesive Soil, Charles Rees Nickerson

Masters Theses

"Some existing test procedures for measuring shearing properties of soils are reviewed. the correlation between the shear strength of two fine-grained soils as indicated by the unconfined compression test and the shear graph test is investigated. This is accomplished by comparing the test results at varying moisture contents and dry densities. One of the soils used is a red plastic clay, the other a silty clay. The test results indicate that for soils wet of optimum the shear graph strength can be taken as being equal to the unconfined compressive strength. This will be conservative for soils that exhibit an …

Effect Of Calcium Lignosulfonate On Properties Of Concrete At Early Ages, Lawrence Kong-Pu Wang Jan 1965

Effect Of Calcium Lignosulfonate On Properties Of Concrete At Early Ages, Lawrence Kong-Pu Wang

Masters Theses

"The objective of this investigation was to determine the effects of calcium lignosulfonate on the physical properties of concrete. Calcium lignosulfonate used as an admixture was tested for its effect on the tensile and compressive strength of plain concrete cylinders, and for its effect on the flexural strength of plain concrete beams. The effect of the admixture on shrinkage, slump, air content and unit weight was also studied. the test results showed that calcium lignosulfonate reduces the amount of water required to make a workable concrete mix; a more workable mix saves money because it is easier to place, thus …

Discharge Characteristics Of Side Weirs, Edgar Snowden Jan 1965

Discharge Characteristics Of Side Weirs, Edgar Snowden

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this study is to investigate the division of flow of water in a flume of rectangular cross-section when the flume is provided with a side weir. An equation has been derived so that the quantity of water flowing over the side weir compared to the quantity of water flowing in the main channel can be predicted. This ratio is acceptable only within the ranges of heads, velocities, and weir lengths imposed by the geometry of the system tested"--Abstract, page ii.

"This work presents an analysis of continuous folded plate roofs considering the effects of relative joint displacements. For this analysis the normal modes of the lateral beam vibration were used as the form of the deflection curve and the loading was sinusoidal. By using symmetry and anti-symmetry, a possible method of analyzing prismatic folded plate roofs comprising one bay transversely but continuous over two or more spans longitudinally is suggested"--Abstract, page ii.

Analysis Of Flat Slabs With Various Edge Supports, Wu-Mo Chern Jan 1965

Analysis Of Flat Slabs With Various Edge Supports, Wu-Mo Chern

Masters Theses

"This study presents the solution of flat slabs with various edge conditions including T-Beam edge supports, The equations formulated are based on the finite difference method and solved using an electronic computer.

The results indicate that the solution of these slabs by the finite difference approximation is a practical method. In addition, this method is more flexible and yields moment values that are considerably more accurate than those obtained using the ACI Code"--Abstract, page ii.

The Transmission Of Loads To Point Bearing Piles In Sand Beneath Retaining Walls, Alan Albert Kamp Jan 1965

The Transmission Of Loads To Point Bearing Piles In Sand Beneath Retaining Walls, Alan Albert Kamp

Masters Theses

"An experimental investigation was made of the way in which loads were transmitted to point bearing H-piles in sand under a retaining wall. Using a plastic model, the moments and axial loads were determined along the length of the pile by measuring the strains with electric strain gages. A comparison was made of the experimental results at the top of the pile and the analytical results at this point; the latter obtained from the common practice used in design. The comparison was very poor because the excessive horizontal load (that part of the horizontal load which could not be carried …

Evaluation Of Pile Bearing Capacity By Use Of The Wave Equation, Stuart H. Williams Jan 1965

Evaluation Of Pile Bearing Capacity By Use Of The Wave Equation, Stuart H. Williams

Masters Theses

"The wave equation method of evaluating pile bearing capacity is investigated by using data obtained from a comprehensive pile testing program. Modifications which create a more accurate and realistic approach are made to the method proposed by previous investigators. With the use of these modifications, correlation between observed and computed results is more readily obtained. Selected pile formulas in the empirical, static, and dynamic categories are reviewed so that a direct comparison between these and the wave equation method can be made"--Abstract, page ii.

The Effect Of Submerged Jets On The Hydraulic Jump, Harvey E. Jobson Jan 1965

The Effect Of Submerged Jets On The Hydraulic Jump, Harvey E. Jobson

Masters Theses

"Tests were performed in order to determine the effects of forcing submerged jets of water into the base of a hydraulic jump. The specific energy of the water leaving the hydraulic jump, the length and the wave formation properties of the jump which had been modified by the introduction of submerged jets were determined and compared with the same characteristics of a normal hydraulic jump and a hydraulic jump which had been modified by the use of baffle piers.

Test results indicate: (a) the quantity of water flowing through the submerged jets is a primary factor in determining the specific …
