Insulation Of Concrete Bridge Decks, W. A. Mossbarger Jr.
Insulation Of Concrete Bridge Decks, W. A. Mossbarger Jr.
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
The complete elimination of snow and ice from principal highways would dispel the last real impediment from winter-time driving. It is not possible, of course, to prevent rain and snow from falling onto the roadway nor to heat endless miles of roads in order to keep them snow-and ice-free. Applications of de-icing salts during the onset or following icy weather has become a standard practice since 1948, and the quantity of salt used for this purpose has increased steadily each successive year. At the present time, salting provides the most expediently satisfactory treatment for icing conditions. Bridges sometimes pose a …

Effects Of Cold-Forming On Light-Gage Steel Members, Kenneth W. Karren, George Winter
Effects Of Cold-Forming On Light-Gage Steel Members, Kenneth W. Karren, George Winter
CCFSS Library (1939 - present)
Cold-forming may cause significant increases in tensile and in compressive yield strength in both the corner and flat elements of light-gage cold-formed steel members. The cumulative effects may raise the yield strength to as reuch as 70% above the virgin yield strength of the as-rolled sheet steel. The yield strength of corners is always considerably higher than that of any other portion of a cold-formed member because of the large plastic deformations which take place in the corners. Thus compact members with a large ratio of corner area to cross sectional area will have the largest increases in yield strength. …
Fifth Annual Performance Survey Of Reinforced Concrete Pipe Culverts, Ronald D. Hughes
Fifth Annual Performance Survey Of Reinforced Concrete Pipe Culverts, Ronald D. Hughes
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
For many years, engineers have sought a simplified method for determining the strength requirements for underground conduits under various conditions of bedding and backfilling. Methods of installation and the general lack of a uniform design criteria tended to restrict the usefulness of rigid pipe culverts. With the advent of the interstate construction program and the increased mileage of highways meeting high design standards, the number of pipe culverts installed under high fills was significantly increased. This, of course, accented even more so the need for a more straightforward criteria for design and installation of rigid pipe in order that maximum …
Graphical Solutions To Frequently Encountered Fluid Flow Problems, Roland W. Jeppson
Graphical Solutions To Frequently Encountered Fluid Flow Problems, Roland W. Jeppson
Reports
Introduction
Graphical methods are often used by engineers to solve frequently used or complex formulas which require trial and error solutions. Perhaps the best known graphical tool used by the engineer is the slide rule, but anyone familiar with its use will recognize its limitations both in time and accuracy. For many problems which involve many repetitive computations high speed digital or analog computers are the most effective tools for solution. There are, however, many problems requiring considerable engineering time for slide rule solutions where solutions are not justifiable on computers. The use of nomograms for such problems is desirable. …

Experimental Investigation Of Free Field Conditions In Tanks To Be Used In Interaction Studies, Clark P. Sanger
Experimental Investigation Of Free Field Conditions In Tanks To Be Used In Interaction Studies, Clark P. Sanger
Civil Engineering ETDs
Experiments to determine the effects of boundary friction losses on static and dynamic vertical stress transmission and to determine the stress-strain relationship of standard 20-30 Ottawa sand in 8-inch-I.D. tanks to be used in burial structure interaction studies are presented. In these tests the tank height, boundary condition, sand density, and overpressure rise time were varied. The use of a greased rubber membrane proved to be a reliable method of minimizing the boundary friction losses thus creating a strain field that was independent of the tank height. Vertical stress transmission was not affected by the overpressure load rate. The stress-strain …
The Effects Of Repeated Loading On The Modulus Of Elasticity Of Concrete, Fidel T. Smith
The Effects Of Repeated Loading On The Modulus Of Elasticity Of Concrete, Fidel T. Smith
Civil Engineering ETDs
Under present design methods, the modulus of elasticity is designated only with respect to the ultimate strength and the unit weight of concrete and is assumed constant throughout the life of the structure. The only provision made for change in the modulus of elasticity due to age, moisture content, type of loading or fatigue is to assume the weakest condition of the concrete. On elastic analysis the stress-strain relationship is assumed to be linear and the concrete is assumed to carry no tensile stress. In ultimate design procedures the concept of straight line distribution of stress is dropped and a …

The Influence Of Exchangeable Ions And Their Concentration In The Pore Fluid On Plastic And Strength Properties Of Cohesive Soil, Mahmoud H. Abd-El-Aziz
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A study was conducted to find out both the effect of different exchangeable cations and the concentration of ions in the soil pore fluid on strength and plastic properties of a sample of cohesive soil taken from the bank of an open drain ditch at the Utah State University Irrigation and Drainage Farm.
The experimental results of this study may be summarized by the following points:
- A general decrease of liquid limit and an increase in both shear strength and modulus of elasticity, with increasing salt concentration in the pore fluid, were observed for all samples, with the exception of …
Water Budget Of Bear River Delta, Chia Chu Hsieh
Water Budget Of Bear River Delta, Chia Chu Hsieh
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study was made to prepare a mean annual water budget of the Bear River Delta, Utah and to determine the average annual outflow from the area into the Great Salt Lake. Solution of the hydrologic continuity equation was the analytical method used in determining the budget. Outflow to the lake was obtained as the residual between all items of inflow and other items of outflow. Three budgets were made using different techniques of estimating some of the items in the equation in order to serve as comparison checks on the final value of outflow to the lake. The time …
Tests Of A Suggested Piezometric Method For Determining Hydraulic Conductivity Of Saturated Soils, K. R. Channarasappa
Tests Of A Suggested Piezometric Method For Determining Hydraulic Conductivity Of Saturated Soils, K. R. Channarasappa
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
A major factor in the design of drainage systems is the hydraulic conductivity of the soil strata to be drained. Various methods for measuring the hydraulic conductivity of soils in both the field and the laboratory have been devised. In many cases, however, laboratory methods fail to give reliable data since the natural field conditions under which flow actually takes place cannot be duplicated in the laboratory. Hence a need exists for a field method for measuring hydraulic conductivity of soils in situ. When a large number of tests are to be performed in a given location, a simple, quick, …

Flume Study Of The Effect Of Concentration And Size Of Roughness Elements On Flow In High-Gradient Natural Channels, Mohamed Wafaie Abdelsalam
Flume Study Of The Effect Of Concentration And Size Of Roughness Elements On Flow In High-Gradient Natural Channels, Mohamed Wafaie Abdelsalam
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In recent years investigators have given increased attention to flow in natural, high-gradient, rough, open channels. Studies include work in both the laboratory and in the field. Solutions to the problem are still incomplete; however, continued attention by investigators is needed to answer many questions. Using a laboratory flume, the writer studied one of the questions concerning the relative importance of gross velocity fluctuations versus turbulent mixing, and the ranges of each under different ranges of submergence and kineticity of flow. In the different ranges, the effect of size and concentration of the roughness elements was studied.
A Critical Analysis Of Water Rights And Institutional Factors And Their Effect On The Development Of Logan River, Frank W. Haws
A Critical Analysis Of Water Rights And Institutional Factors And Their Effect On The Development Of Logan River, Frank W. Haws
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The physical setting of the Logan River Drainage Basin is first described with emphasis on the hydrologic and climatic factors that made the river an economic and social benefit.
The historical development of the river by man is then traced, and changes in water use patterns are pointed out. Methods used to administer water rights as water use patterns change is then described.
Legal controversies over water rights on the river are examined and methods of solving problems analyzed. A recent law suit between Logan City Corporation and the Logan River Water Users Association is examined in detail and the …

Freeze-Thaw Characteristics Of Aggregates, George R. Laughlin
Freeze-Thaw Characteristics Of Aggregates, George R. Laughlin
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
Premature deterioration of concrete under freezing and thawing conditions is often attributable to the aggregate fraction. Past research has shown that the freeze-thaw characteristics of aggregate are related, in a general way, to such properties as: 1) porosity, 2) absorption, and 3) bulk specific gravity. Actually it is the pore system--that is, the size, shape, arrangement and continuity of the pores--that governs the freeze-thaw characteristics. Distress in aggregate particles arises from hydrostatic pressure induced when a portion of its absorbed pore-water is frozen. The degree of distress or damage manifested is dependent upon the amount of permeable porosity, the degree …

Accelerometer Method Of Riding-Quality Testing, Rolands L. Rizenbergs
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
At a meeting of Highway Research Board Committee D-B4 last January, R. L. Rizenbergs presented an oral description of our development of the accelerometer method of measuring road roughness; and representatives from several state highway departments expressed an interest in duplicating our instrumentation. It became incumbent upon us then to prepare a more formal description for distribution to the Committee and other interested parties. The report submitted herewith is intended to fulfill that purpose. No specific action is requested. Copies are furnished for information only.
Construction And Interim Performance Of Silica Sand-Asphalt Surfacing, Robert L. Florence
Construction And Interim Performance Of Silica Sand-Asphalt Surfacing, Robert L. Florence
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
The report submitted herewith emanates from continuing efforts to develop sand-asphalt surfacing to a high degree of perfection and as a possible alternative to Class I, Type A, bituminous concrete surfaces. This type of surface excels in skid-resistance and may evolve as a preferred method of surface renewal and de-slicking for worn pavements which are otherwise structurally substantial. This report is concerned principally with observations afforded by the aforenamed, State construction project; it is, in that sense, an interim report.

Water Vapor Measurements Using Infrared Absorption, Duard S. Woffinden
Water Vapor Measurements Using Infrared Absorption, Duard S. Woffinden
Reports
Man’s attempt to control the amount of available water has taken two approaches, i.e., weather modification and water storage through the use of man-made reservoirs. In either case, it is necessary to ascertain the water vapor content of the atmosphere. In the case of weather modification, if the water vapor content is insufficient, it is futile to attempt to start precipitation. In the case of reservoirs, it is important to know the evaporation rate since it has been demonstrated that some reservoirs provide a net negative contribution to the total water supply by increasing the normal evaporation losses. Any attempt …
Submerged Parshall Flumes Of Small Size, Gaylord V. Skogerboe, M. Leon Hyatt, J. Raymond Johnson, Joe D. England
Submerged Parshall Flumes Of Small Size, Gaylord V. Skogerboe, M. Leon Hyatt, J. Raymond Johnson, Joe D. England
Reports
The calibration of small Parshall flumes for measuring flows ranging in magnitude from 0.1 to 1.1 cubic feet per second (cfs) was accomplished by A. R. Robinson (1960) at Colorado State University. The purpose of Robinson’s investigation was to accurately calibrate and standardize the design of small Parshall measuring flumes. The rated flumes were constructed of galvanized sheet metal. Data was collected for Parshall flumes having throat widths of 1-, 2-, and 3- inches. Calibration tables or curves were prepared for both free and submerged flow. The dimensions of the Parshall flumes rated by Robinson are shown in Figure 1. …

Submergence In A Two-Foot Parshall Flume, Gaylord V. Skogerboe, M. Leon Hyatt, Joe D. England, J. Raymond Johnson
Reports
The primary objective in this study was to ascertain the validity of the method of analyzing submergence developed by Hyatt (1965) in a standard 2-foot Parshall flume. The method of analyzing submergence was first developed for a trapezoidal flume (Hyatt, 1965), was later verified for a rectangular flume (Skogerboe, walker and Robinson, 1965), and has been shown by the authors to be valid for small Parshall flumes (Skogerboe, Hyatt, Johnson, and England, 1965). In view of previous findings, it was felt the method would also be valid for large Parshall flumes, and for this purpose the 2-foot flume was selected. …
