International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
This paper describes geotechnical design concepts used in developing 45-degree and 56-degree embankment slopes to meet strict stability criteria. Typical design sections are presented along with example stability computations to illustrate factors of safety developed under static and rapid drawdown conditions. This paper also discusses pertinent, site specific aspects of construction considered germane to successful, long term performance of oversteepened slopes at this site.

Performance Of Lpg Storage Tanks On Ground Improved By Stone Columns, E. R. Farrell, T. L. L. Orr, T. O'Donovan
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
This paper describes the construction of four large tanks on poor soil conditions consisting of hydraulic fill placed over estuarine silt in Dublin port. The limited differential settlement that could be tolerated by the tanks required that they could not be placed on the existing ground. The optimum solution was found to be ground treatment using vibro-replacement with the formation of stone columns and compaction of the fill. The paper describes the design method used and the control tests. The predicted settlements are compared with settlement readings of the tanks following construction. These show that the chosen solution has performed …

Progress In The Use Of Natm For The São Paulo Subway, T. B. Celestino, O. A. Ferrari, C. T. Mitsuse, L. C. Domingues
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The first time that the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) was used for underground works in the Sao Paulo Subway was in 1981. Since that time, significant progress has been achieved in successfully optimizing the support and lowering the construction costs. This paper will describe the latest experience of two single-track parallel tunnels excavated in 1986 through tertiary stiff clay. All the experience accumulated in previous jobs led to design improvements, such as (1) no steel ribs for support along 72% of the tunnels length (2) no temporary invert, and (3) no spiles, forepoles, soil grouting or any other type …
Recent Examples Of Cut And Fill Reinforcement On A41-Highway In France, Trân Vô Nhiêm
Recent Examples Of Cut And Fill Reinforcement On A41-Highway In France, Trân Vô Nhiêm
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
At EVIRES PASS, between ANNECY and MONT BLANC in FRANCE, subsoil is made up of unstable clayey natural versants and marly bedrock affected by previous or current slidings. The problems encountered during the new A41-Highway construction were aggravated by the proximity of Road and Railway located on top of the same versant. The final Design consisted of succession of cuts and embankments with special soil reinforcement techniques to improve stability. So two existing unstable Railway embankments were promptly consolidated by "soil nailing" with driven steel dowel-piles which were either anchored or not. Two other high cuts in marls and sandstones …
Reinforced Soil In The Repair Of Embankment And Cutting Slip Failures, James Paul
Reinforced Soil In The Repair Of Embankment And Cutting Slip Failures, James Paul
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The paper considers the causes of slips in embankments and cuttings and examines the traditional methods of repair and reinstatement. Reinforced soil solutions are examined and compared with the more traditional systems. Following consideration of the structure and properties of a polymer geogrid for use in reinforced soil applications, two case histories are presented. The first involves the repair of a cutting slip in overconsolidated clay in S.E. England. Both the design method and construction system are examined along with indications of relative costs. The second example is a slip in a highway embankment in Sweden where a reinforced soil …

The Rehabilitation Of Terminal 2 – A Case History, D. J. Hardin, M. L. Byington, S. V. Mills
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The Port of Portland, Oregon recently completed the rehabilitation of the downstream portion of Terminal 2. The project included the placement of more than 1 million cy of dredged hydraulic sand fill and the construction of a 1,400-ft-long pile-supported wharf. Up to 60 ft of sand fill was placed over soft, submerged sediments. The silt along the toe of the slope was removed prior to placing the fill. No shear failures or mudwaves were detected during filling. The fill induced settlements of up to 63 in., which agreed well with the predicted maximum settlement of about 60 in. Underwater sand …

The Use Of Synthetic Liner And/Or Soil-Bentonite Liner For Groundwater Protection, Harl D. Sharma, Paul Kozicki
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
This paper briefly reviews the various liner materials, their properties and applications to prevent contaminate spread into the groundwater. Following this, two cases have been described that cite the use of two liner types for this purpose. One case provides the details of designing the reinforced CPE liner and its under-drainage system to store the fluids at a new petrochemical plant. The second case provides the details of designing and constructing a soil-bentonite liner for aerated lagoon facilities.
Vertical Excavation Below Footing Solved By Compaction Grouting, Harry Grice, Ernest T. Mosley, Richard M. Berry
Vertical Excavation Below Footing Solved By Compaction Grouting, Harry Grice, Ernest T. Mosley, Richard M. Berry
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
One of the problems regularly facing engineers in designing additions to buildings or other structures is dealing with excavating for footings directly adjoining existing footings but at a deeper level. This was accomplished in sandy soils economically and quickly for a noted Conference Center in 1983 by using compaction grouting. Compaction piles were utilized to pick up existing loads as well as the horizontal loads which would normally allow the building to tip, settle and crack. We believe this was the first use of compaction piles as "anchor" piles to pick up horizontal loads. By using this process, the sandy …

A Modified Field Infiltrometer Test For Clay Liners, G. S. Laird, W. B. Lozier, A. M. Gurevich
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Regulatory agencies are looking more frequently to in situ field hydraulic conductivity tests for the assessment of a liner's compliance to a specified hydraulic conductivity. Most field tests have evaluated hydraulic conductivity by measuring the infiltration rate of the liner. The infiltration rate can be used to arrive at a hydraulic conductivity value if the hydraulic boundary conditions of the test can be identified or if the head loss at different depths can be measured. A test fill of a clay liner was evaluated for its saturated vertical hydraulic conductivity. This paper discusses the use of eight tensiometers to measure …
A Study Of Contamination Migration At A Hazardous Waste Facility In Louisiana, George H. Cramer Ii
A Study Of Contamination Migration At A Hazardous Waste Facility In Louisiana, George H. Cramer Ii
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Traditionally clay soils have been regarded as being relatively impermeable to the migration of water and contaminants. Recent studies in Louisiana are beginning to show, however, that laboratory permeability tests are not true indicators of the ability of an in-situ soil to retain or transmit fluids. Both the depositional and post-depositional environment of a soil can greatly alter its in-situ permeability. In particular, post-depositional structural fractures provide preferential pathways for contaminant migration at rates that far exceed those predicted by using laboratory permeability values. Difficulties in field identification of these pathways reduces modeling of their effect on site hydrology to …
Control Of Uplift From Ground Water, R. V. Sarsby
Control Of Uplift From Ground Water, R. V. Sarsby
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
This paper relates to the conversion of a disused water reservoir into a landfill site for domestic and industrial refuse. The reservoir was initially subdivided into four cells (by using earth bunds) and three of the cells have been successfully prepared and filled. The fourth cell is the largest and presents the greatest number of geotechnical problems, the major one being the problem of ensuring that leachate does not escape into the groundwater. The first owner of the site removed natural clay from various parts of the reservoir base to seal the first three cells. In doing so he exposed …

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Reclamation of 24 inactive uranium mill tailngs piles involves remedial work to stabilize the piles for 1000 years. Site characterization of geotechnical and groundwater conditions at each site is undertaken prior to remedial action design. This paper describes the approach to UMTRA Project site characterization. A case history, Green River, is described. Details of site characterization costs for most sites are provided.
Hazardous Waste Disposal Site Hydrogeologic Characterization, S. M. Testa
Hazardous Waste Disposal Site Hydrogeologic Characterization, S. M. Testa
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
A major hazardous waste disposal facility near Arlington, Oregon serving the Pacific Northwest, Canada, and Alaska maintains numerous favorable environmental characteristics for siting of a hazardous waste disposal facility. The risk of contamination as a result of potential leakage from a waste management unit via primary pathways to surface water, groundwater or by direct contact and/or ingestion is thus reasonably low. However, these same characteristics which make the site most suitable for hazardous waste disposal often conflict with: 1) the demonstration of the groundwater monitoring system's ability to adequately perform immediate leak detection monitoring as mandated under the Resource Conservation …
Performance Of Lightweight Waste-Impoundment Dikes, Peter J. Bosscher, Tuncer B. Edil
Performance Of Lightweight Waste-Impoundment Dikes, Peter J. Bosscher, Tuncer B. Edil
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The containment dikes of two sludge disposal lagoons were founded on low strength, highly compressible wetland soils in Madison, Wisconsin. These lagoons, constructed in 1942 and 1967 respectively, encompass 130 acres of digested sludge produced at the sewage treatment plant. The dikes have experienced two previous failures in 1970 and 1973. A dike rehabilitation program was initiated in 1976 to prevent additional failures. New dikes were built using wood chips as a lightweight fill. Non-woven synthetic filter fabric was used to prevent soil intrusion into the chips and to provide resistance to lateral spreading. An investigation was initiated in 1984 …

Site Of An Oil Producing Property, H. Dezfulian
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
An assessment of a 6.78-acre parcel of oil-producing land with one active, seven idle, and two abandoned oil wells was performed. Following the collection and review of site data, an evaluation was made of the toxic properties of on-site soils for the presence of hazardous substances. Soil samples were collected by advancing boreholes at eight locations. These locations were selected on the bas is of the results of an aerial photographs review, a geophysical survey, and statistical sampling design techniques. An analytical program was conducted to test for chemicals that would likely be present from the oil field operations. It …

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
For over six decades Kaliasaur landslide (Lat. 30° 14' 30" N, Long. 78° 55' 50" E) is a nightmare on the Hardwar-Badrinath road in the Garhwal Himalaya. Located on a sharp bend on the left bank of river Alaknanda, it has emerged as a multi-tier repetitive major landslide, retrogressive in nature. Both surficial and deep seated movements have been monitored. The sliding in the upper layers have been predominantly in the colluvium but where interfaces of quartzite and shale participates, the sliding surfaces have been better defined and discrete. In the present paper, the authors have highlighted the geological, geomorphological …

A Study Of A Road Landslide In Puerto Rico, C. Rodriguez-Pérez, L. Vázquez Castillo, C. Rodriguez-Molina, A. Vázquez Castillo
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Numerous landslides have plagued the construction of a 1.3 mile road sector in the mountainous region of central Puerto Rico. The area is underlain by a sequence of landslide deposits overlying a muddy limestone and hard overconsolidated clayey soils. Landslides have occurred in both cuts and fills that have delayed the road construction for a period of more than two years, bringing as a result, great economic losses for the Puerto Rico Highway Authority. The landslide trigger mechanism has been intimately related to high rainfall, commonly observed in this region. The geotechnical and geological studies performed previous to the construction …

Case History Of Maneri-Uttarkashi Power Tunnel, R. K. Goel, J. L. Jethwa, B. Singh
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
A 8.56 km long circular tunnel of 4.75 m diameter has been constructed under Maneri hydel project on the river Bhagirathi. The tunnel passes alternatively through quartzitic and metabasic rock formations of the young Himalayan terrain. Tunnel excavation was started from four faces, one at the upstream end at maneri, two from an intermediate adit at Heena, and one at the downstream end near Uttarkashi where a 80 MW surface powerhouse is located. In excavating the tunnel from different faces, the problems of tunnel face collapse with heavy ingress of water, cavity formations and large tunnel closures leading to buckling …

Case Study – Ground Failures And Ruptures In Xian City, Zhong-Qi Wang, Rong-Xiang Zhang
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Xian city, the most well known ancient city of China for her incredible Terra Cotta Warriers and so forth, has been suffered from ground fracture for years. Surface ruptures and "faultings" encountered in strips all over the city. Hundreds of buildings were severely destroyed and many of them even have been demolished. Ground failures wide-spread and enlarged from time to time, especially right from Tangshan earthquake of July 28, 1976. Therefore serious concerns and suspicious of being associated with major earthquakes have arosed. Thus it has been a problem of both engineering and social influence. Like many other cities in …

Evaluation Of The Site Investigation And Construction Related Aspects Of The Milwaukee's Crosstown Deep Tunnel, R. C. Ilsley, S. B. Fradkin, E. F. Shorey
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The excavation of the 21,300 foot long, 32.33 foot diameter Crosstown Phase I Tunnel was completed by tunnel boring machine at an average rate of 108 feet per 3 shift day. No geologic conditions were encountered which were sufficiently adverse to impede the work. The geotechnical report combined with contract provisions prevented the unusual conditions encountered from becoming issues that delayed the work. It is probable that the monetary aspects related to these unusual conditions can be equitably resolved using the geotechnical data “base line” portrayed in the geotechnical report.

Microseismic Activity In An Open Pit Lignite Mine, J. M. Descour, R. J. Miller
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
An increased level of horizontal stress related to tectonic forces is often held responsible for unexpectedly strong mining induced seismicity. The authors use the Belchatow open pit lignite 'mine in central Poland to show that this seismicity can be explained without tectonic forces as well. The presented approach should offer affordable ways of detecting the problem before it occurs, and either preventing it or controlling its scale.
