Enhancement Of Aeration And Activated Sludge Processes Using Micronanobubbles For Efficient Wastewater Treatment, Marwa Ahmed Abdelhamid
Thesis/ Dissertation Defenses
Aeration is considered one of the most reliable and efficient processes in wastewater treatment. However, conventional aeration systems show low performance with respect to the gas transfer during the treatment process. This poses a challenge in maintaining sufficient dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations essential for the treatment. The use of micronanobubbles (MNBs) in the aeration process has been proposed as effective tool in water and wastewater treatment owing to their stability and longevity. MNBs’ stability is a distinctive property resulting from several mechanisms, including the repulsion force due to charged surfaces that helps bubbles to resist coalescence/bursting. MNBs’ longevity is represented …

Synthesis Of Sustainable Self-Foaming Glass Ceramics Using Waste Glass And Aluminium Dross, Abba Musa Hassan
Student Works (2020-2029)
The growing global demand for sustainable materials has driven extensive research into lightweight insulating materials, such as self-foaming glass ceramics (SFGCs), which align closely with the principles of a circular economy. While the alkali activation of aluminosilicates offers an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional, energy-intensive industrial methods for producing glass-based foams, current approaches often depend on synthetic foaming agents, high-speed agitation, and elevated sintering temperatures. These factors adversely affect slurry rheology, resulting in suboptimal microstructures, reduced mechanical strength, increased production costs, and negative environmental impacts. This study contributes to the advancement of the field by developing eco-friendly SFGCs using soda-lime …

Integrated Optimization And Data-Driven Modeling For Seawater Intrusion Mitigation And Prediction, Assaad Hassan Kassem
Thesis/ Dissertation Defenses
Seawater intrusion (SWI) threatens the reliability of coastal groundwater especially in hyper-arid settings, where climatic stress and pumping accelerate salinization. This dissertation advances two complementary approaches to managing SWI: Part A optimizes mitigation measures, hydraulic (pumping/injection) and physical barriers (cutoff walls, subsurface dams) on benchmark models; Part B predicts SWI in the hyper-arid Fujairah (UAE) coastal aquifer using total dissolved solids (TDS) as a proxy, through machine learning-based models, spatially and dynamically. A bibliometric synthesis first maps the evolution of SWI models and mitigation strategies, identifying gaps that motivate the subsequent methodological developments. Part A employs the classical Henry problem …

Great Lakes Water Levels: Curve Fitting, Statistics, And The Unacceptable-Value Statistical Approach, Brian Barkdoll
Great Lakes Water Levels: Curve Fitting, Statistics, And The Unacceptable-Value Statistical Approach, Brian Barkdoll
Michigan Tech Publications
Water levels in the Great Lakes fluctuate over time. Excessively high levels can cause flooding, erosion, property damage, and loss of human life. Excessively low values inhibit shipping since boats cannot reach the ports and docks due to low draft, thereby causing loss of economic resources. Water level prediction has proven elusive, thereby requiring a new approach to analyzing the historical record of water level values. Methods attempted here include curve fitting, conventional statistics, and a newly introduced Unacceptable-Value Statistical Approach (UVSA). The UVSA comprises only analyzing flooding and drought events. All remaining values are acceptable and, therefore, are not …

The growing frequency and intensity of wildfires is significantly impacting power grid operations. Specifically, wildfires spreading to power lines can induce thermal stress, leading to a restriction in line capacity. This reduction imposes a challenge for electric utilities as they must supply electric demand while experiencing reduced transmission capacity. This paper introduces a model that simulates wildfire behavior in proximity to a transmission line, evaluates the impact on conductor temperature and capacity constraints, and subsequently analyzes the impact on grid operation from economic and reliability perspectives. The numerical studies conducted on the IEEE 14-bus test system assess both economic and …

Deep Reinforcement Learning Based Control For Enhanced Frequency Response With Multi-Energy Storage Systems, Abu Shouaib Hasan, Rui Fan, Wei Gao, Di Wu
Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Scholarship
This paper proposes an advanced strategy for managing multiple battery energy storage systems (BESS) to enhance frequency support during contingencies. A novel deep reinforcement learning (DRL) framework based on a guided surrogate-gradient-based evolutionary strategy (GSES) was developed to dynamically regulate BESS outputs for rapid power injection or absorption. This approach effectively mitigates the rate of change of frequency (ROCOF) and stabilizes the system frequency under varying operating conditions. Parallel computing techniques are employed to accelerate training and ensure robust performance. In addition, a genetic algorithm is implemented to determine the placement of BESS within the grid network, strategically minimizing ROCOF …
