Comparison Of Different Power System Resilience Assessment Methods, Jian How Sam Chan

Student Works (2020-2029)

Climate change has been given significant attention in recent times, calling for more ideas to address issues stemming from extreme weather events. Until climate change can be slowed down and ultimately be reversed, it is an imminent objective to find solutions for the mitigation and prevention of the effects of catastrophic weather events. History has a record of the devastation caused by such events on electrical power infrastructures. While electrical power systems have conventionally been designed and built to weather everyday conditions, confronting cataclysmic high-impact, low-probability events will require more resilient attributes. Power systems are often deemed as the backbone …

Optimal Distribution Of Best Management Practices (Bmps) For Urban Stormwater Runoff Quantity And Quality Control, Rezaei Abdul Razaq

Student Works (2020-2029)

The vast development of urban areas throughout the world has substantially impacted the natural landscapes, leading to more imperviousness. Urbanization typically results in a larger amount of runoff volume, increase in flow frequency, duration and peak runoff, faster time of concentration as well as lower infiltration which will affect groundwater recharge. The stormwater runoff quality is also adversely affected in urban areas due to the pollutant loads in stormwater runoff. Best Management Practices (BMPs) and Low Impact Development (LID) have been widely applied to urban impervious surfaces to reduce urban stormwater runoff and improve water quality. In order to achieve …

Computational Modeling Of Recycled Aggregate Concrete Systems, Anuruddha Jayasuriya May 2020

Computational Modeling Of Recycled Aggregate Concrete Systems, Anuruddha Jayasuriya

Dissertations

Using recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) as a substitution in concrete materials is an excellent way to improve the sustainability of concrete production. However, due to a lack of globally accepted technical guidance, and high material variability, the usage of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) systems is not readily practiced within most structural engineering applications.

To date, the majority of the experimental findings in the literature indicate that RAC is a weaker composite material when compared to a natural aggregate concrete system in terms of mechanical properties such as compressive strength, elastic modulus, tensile strength, flexural strength, fracture energy, and toughness. However, …

Compound Flooding In Coastal Areas Emanating From Inland And Offshore Events, Hamed Behzad Koochaksaraii May 2020

Compound Flooding In Coastal Areas Emanating From Inland And Offshore Events, Hamed Behzad Koochaksaraii

Dissertations

The vulnerability of urban populations to natural hazards and climate change is a major theme in many reports on coastal cities with flooding ranking highly among the climate change concerns. Flooding could occur as a result of runoff for inland rainfall that accumulates at the mouth of the estuary to the sea or it could occur due to a storm surge emanating from the ocean. The techniques for modeling the flooding from these events are very different, as they were developed in different scientific fields: hydrology and hydraulic engineering for inland rainfall versus coastal oceanography and coastal engineering for offshore …

Hydraulic fracturing is a well-stimulation technique that is employed in field applications, such as enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) and shale oil/gas extraction. This research experimentally investigates the effect of the state of stress and injection rate on the hydraulic fracturing processes. In addition, a displacement discontinuity method (DDM) code, FROCK, is used to model the crack initiation and propagation in a granite specimen under hydraulic fracturing conditions. In order to conduct the experimental work, a test setup capable of applying a triaxial state of stress and water pressure inside pre-fabricated flaws cut in prismatic granite specimens is developed. Additionally, the …

Numerical And Analytical Methods To Predict Behavior Of Reinforced Ductile Concrete Composites, Mandeep Pokhrel May 2020

Numerical And Analytical Methods To Predict Behavior Of Reinforced Ductile Concrete Composites, Mandeep Pokhrel

Dissertations

Structural components constructed with ductile concrete composites, such as high-performance fiber-reinforced cementitious composites (HPFRCC), are known to perform exceptionally well under extreme mechanical and environmental loading conditions compared to traditional concrete. HPFRCC flexural components exhibit enhanced performance in terms of displacement ductility, energy dissipation capacity, and damage tolerance capacity. However, recent research suggests that the flexural behavior of reinforced HPFRCCs in terms of crack progression, reinforcement plasticity, and failure mechanism is significantly different than conventional reinforced concrete. Specifically, the failure mode of flexural members is found to be predominantly through the fracture of longitudinal reinforcement rather than compression crushing of …

Theses

Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA), one of the common per- and poly fluorinated alkylated substances (PFASs), is increasingly detected in the environment due to the diverse industrial applications and high resistance to degradation processes. This study evaluated degradation of PFOA in microwave-assistant catalytic membrane filtration, a process that integrates microwave catalytic reactions into a ceramic membrane filtration. First, water permeation of the pristine and catalyst-coated membranes were examined under the influence of microwave irradiation to analyse the impacts of the coating layer and water temperature increase on permeate flux, which were well interpreted by three models. Then, the PFOA removal was first …

Backing Up Into Advocacy: The Case Of Smartphone Driver Distraction, Robert Rosenberger May 2020

Backing Up Into Advocacy: The Case Of Smartphone Driver Distraction, Robert Rosenberger

The Journal of Sociotechnical Critique

For the last decade, I’ve been studying the topic of the driving impairment of smartphones. While this began as an exclusively academic project, it has increasingly compelled public engagement. One example of this came in an opinion piece I wrote in 2018 in response to a new traffic law. I take the opportunity here to fill out the academic backstory of this particular op-ed, reflect on how this larger project has evolved to include an unanticipated public-facing edge, and abstract some lessons about public writing.

Fast Summarizing Algorithm For Polygonal Statistics Over A Regular Grid, Scott Haag, David G. Tarboton, Martyn Smith, Ali Shokoufandeh May 2020

Fast Summarizing Algorithm For Polygonal Statistics Over A Regular Grid, Scott Haag, David G. Tarboton, Martyn Smith, Ali Shokoufandeh

Publications

We describe a data structure and associated algorithm called Fast Zonal Statistics (FZS) for the retrieval of the summary characteristics of an arbitrary polygon derived from a regular grid. The FZS algorithm can return numerical (e.g., mean, sum, and count) attributes for a polygonal object over a regular grid (e.g., raster data model). The computational complexity of the FZS algorithm is constant in relation to the length of the polygon perimeter. This contrasts with existing approaches which scale in relation to the polygon area, therefore we expect and measure geometric decreases in execution time using the proposed approach for simple …

Reliability Analysis Of Concrete Gravity Dams Under Earthquake Loads, Anu Abraham May 2020

Reliability Analysis Of Concrete Gravity Dams Under Earthquake Loads, Anu Abraham

LSU Master's Theses

Dams are infrastructure assets of extreme importance; the failure of which can have catastrophic consequences on adjacent communities. Therefore, it is prudent for authorities to evaluate the safety of existing dams in seismically active regions. This thesis focuses on carrying out a reliability analysis of concrete gravity dams under earthquake loads using an enhanced finite element model. For many years, reliability studies on concrete gravity dams were performed using a finite element model that considered a massless foundation and assumed that water is incompressible. Moreover, the design ground motion was applied without any modification either at the bottom fixed boundary …
