Membrane Immobilized Reactive Fe/Pd Nanoparticles: Modeling And Tce Degradation Results, Ruo He
Membrane Immobilized Reactive Fe/Pd Nanoparticles: Modeling And Tce Degradation Results, Ruo He
Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering
Detoxification of chlorinated organic compound is an important and urgent issue in water remediation nowadays. Trichloroethylene (TCE), as a model compound in this study, has been proved to be degraded effectively by bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) in solution phase. In this study, Fe/Pd bimetallic NPs were synthesized in poly (acrylic acid) (PAA) functionalized polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) microfiltration membranes. TCE dechlorination with these bimetallic NPs was conducted under different pH values and different metal loadings to study the role of corrosion on reaction rates.
One-dimensional mathematical model with pseudo first-order reaction kinetic was introduced to discuss the TCE dechlorination profile in membrane …
Mechanical Characterization Of Polymer Electrolyte Membrane With Optical Methods, Xinyu Huang, Luis Alva, Jay Neutzler
Mechanical Characterization Of Polymer Electrolyte Membrane With Optical Methods, Xinyu Huang, Luis Alva, Jay Neutzler
Faculty Publications
Mechanical properties of polymer electrolyte membrane have important implications in the endurance of many electrochemical energy conversion devices [1]. Mechanical experiments are effective method to reveal discrete damage developed in the membrane by quantifying the change of mechanical strength and toughness. Regular strain measurement methods are overly intrusive to the thin and relatively fragile polymer electrolyte membrane; hence optical-based minimal invasive stress/strain measurement methods are studied.

Mechanics-Based Model For Non-Affine Swelling In Perfluorosulfonic Acid (Pfsa) Membranes, Ahmet Kusoglu, Michael H. Santare, Anette M. Karlsson
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
A mechanics-based model is developed to predict the swelling pressure in perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) ionomer membranes during water uptake. The PFSA membrane is represented as a two-phase system, where the water-filled hydrophilic domains are dispersed throughout the hydrophobic polymer matrix. Two representative volume elements (RVEs) are used to represent the nanostructure: (i) a spherical RVE with a spherical hydrophilic domain at the center, and (ii) a cylindrical RVE with a cylindrical hydrophilic domain. The model starts with the non-affine swelling behavior of the membrane and interprets this as a structural reorganization of the RVEs to characterize the microscopic deformation. Swelling …

Stress-Strain Behavior Of Perfluorosulfonic Acid Membranes At Various Temperatures And Humidities: Experiments And Phenomenological Modeling, Ahmet Kusoglu, Yaliang Tang, Michael Santare, Anette M. Karlsson, Simon Cleghorn, William B. Johnson
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
The constitutive response of perfluorinated sulfonic acid (PFSA) membranes based on tensile testing is investigated, and a phenomenological constitutive model for the elastoplastic flow behavior as a function of temperature and humidity is proposed. To this end, the G'Sell–Jonas (1979, “Determination of the Plastic Behavior of Solid Polymers at Constant True Strain Rate,” J. Mater. Sci., 14, pp. 583–591) constitutive model for semicrystalline polymers is extended by incorporating, in addition to temperature, relationships between the material constants of this model and the measured relative humidity. By matching the proposed constitutive model to the experimental stress-strain data, useful material constants …

Inhomogeneous Degradation Of Polymer Electrolyte Membrane In Pem Fuel Cells, Xinyu Huang, Wonseok Yoon
Faculty Publications
Membrane durability is one of the technical barriers for the commercialization of polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells. Membrane embrittlement (a form of mechanical weakening) can lead to the frequently observed “sudden death” behavior of PEM fuel cells. It is the objective of this study to explore the fundamental mechanisms of the mechanical weakening of perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) based electrolyte membranes during the accelerated degradation test.

Electrodeposition Of Nickel Nanowires And Nanotubes Using Various Templates, Asli Ertan, Surendra N. Tewari, Orhan Talu
Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
Nickel nanotubes and nanowires are grown by galvanostatic electrodeposition in the pores of 1000, 100, and 15 nm polycarbonate as well as in anodised alumina membranes at a current density of 10 mA cm-2. The effects of pore size, porosity, electrodeposition time, effective current density, and pore aspect ratio are investigated. Nickel nanotube structures are obtained with 1000 nm pore size polycarbonate membrane without any prior treatment method. At the early stages of electrodeposition hollow nickel nanotubes are produced and nanotubes turn into nanowires at longer depositon times. As effective current density accounting for the membrane porosity decreases, the axial …

A micromechanics model is developed to predict Young’s modulus of perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) membranes at various temperatures and water contents. The morphology of PFSA membranes is characterized by a two-phase structure, where hydrophilic clusters expand to hold water molecules during swelling, whereas the hydrophobic polymer network maintains the structural stability. A representative volume element (RVE) is proposed based on the descriptions for the nanostructure of PFSA membranes available in the literature. On the basis of mechanics model, we estimate Young’s modulus in tension of PFSA membranes as a function of water volume fraction for various temperatures. The results show that …

Optimizing Performance Of Conductive Nanoparticle-Filled Membranes, Alison Chen
Honors Scholar Theses
Conductive membranes were prepared by magnetic alignment of graphite-coated iron nanoparticles (GCINs) in a polyisobutylene (PIB) matrix, which was cast onto an interdigitated surface electrode. Toluene and tetrahydrofuran (THF) were used as solvents for the casting solution. Different molecular weights of PIB and solutions with concentrations ranging from 0.05- to 50-wt% were explored to optimize the mechanical and physical properties of the membrane. The amount of GCINs used in the membranes ranged from 0.1- to 2.5-wt%, and a sonicator was used to disperse the particles in the membrane. Sedimentation and surfactant studies were conducted to investigate the dispersion of GCINs …

Adsorption Of Lactic Acid From Fermentation Broth And Aqueous Solutions On Zeolite Molecular Sieves, Isam H. Aljundi, Joanne M. Belovich, Orhan Talu
Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
The recovery of lactic acid from fermentation broth and aqueous solutions was studied by adsorption on Silicalite molecular sieves. Batch experiments were used to measure the adsorption isotherms of the lactic acid on Silicalite. A linear correlation was found for both solutions. Silicalite showed a higher adsorptive capacity in the case of the aqueous solution than that of the fermentation broth. Henry’s constants were estimated as Formula Not Shown and Formula Not Shown for the aqueous and broth solutions, respectively. The effect of temperature on adsorption was also studied in batch mode. Henry’s constant dependency on …

This paper presents an analysis of a filtration technique that uses ultrasound to aid the collection of small particles (tens of microns in diameter) from suspension. In this method, particles are retained within a porous mesh that is subjected to a resonant ultrasonic field, even though the pore size of the mesh is two orders of magnitude greater than the particle diameter. The role of acoustic forces in driving the retention phenomena has previously been studied on a micro-scale, which included modeling and experimental verification of particle motion and trapping near a single element of the mesh. Here, we build …
Pervaporation Of Water From Solvent Solutions, Richard Manning
Pervaporation Of Water From Solvent Solutions, Richard Manning
Theses
Pervaporation is an emerging membrane technology which has found acceptance as a method for the dehydration of organic solvents.
An existing pervaporation apparatus was modified to accommodate a new type of pervaporation membrane. The instrumentation used with the pervaporation apparatus was upgraded to include a Keithley Data Logger. A HAZOP was carried out on the modified pervaporation apparatus to ensure the apparatus was safe to operate after the modifications were completed.
The pervaporation apparatus was initially tested using screening experiments to verify that changing the operating parameters produced a measurable response which could be recorded. The pervaporation apparatus was successfully …
Thermodynamic Analysis Of Separation Systems, Yaşar Demirel
Thermodynamic Analysis Of Separation Systems, Yaşar Demirel
Papers in Thermal Mechanics
Separation systems mainly involve interfacial mass and heat transfer as well as mixing. Distillation is a major separation system by means of heat supplied from a higher temperature level at the reboiler and rejected in the condenser at a lower temperature level. Therefore, it resembles a heat engine producing a separation work with a rather low efficiency. Lost work (energy) in separation systems is due to irreversible processes of heat, mass transfer, and mixing, and is directly related to entropy production according to the Gouy-Stodola principle. In many separation systems of absorption, desorption, extraction, and membrane separation, the major irreversibility …

A processing approach for the collection and retention of mammalian cells within a high porosity polyester mesh having millimeter-sized pores has been studied. Cell retention occurs via energizing the mesh with a low intensity, resonant acoustic field. The resulting acoustic field induces the interaction of cells with elements of the mesh or with each other and effectively prevents the entrainment of cells in the effluent stream. Experiments involving aqueous suspensions of polystyrene particles were used to provide benchmark data on the performance of the acoustic retention cell. Experiments using mouse hybridoma cells showed that retention densities of over 1.5 × …

Five parameters of a model of a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) cathode (the volume fraction of gas pores in the gas diffusion layer, the volume fraction of gas pores in the catalyst layer, the exchange current density of the oxygen reduction reaction, the effective ionic conductivity of the electrolyte, and the ratio of the effective diffusion coefficient of oxygen in a flooded spherical agglomerate particle to the square of that particle radius) were determined by least-squares fitting of experimental polarization curves. The values of parameters obtained in this work indicate that ionic conduction and gas-phase transport are two …

A characterization of the ionic conduction of the active layer of a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) cathode by ac impedance measurement at open-circuit potential conditions was conducted. Porous electrode theory was used to derive a compact equation, ∂2Φ̑2/∂y2+∂lnf(y)/∂y×∂Φ̑2/∂y−R/f(y)(1+jΩ)Φ̑2=0, to solve for the impedance response of a cathode at open-circuit potential conditions. This equation includes a parameter R, the ratio of an ionic resistance (evaluated at the active layer/membrane interface), to the total charge-transfer resistance of the active layer. The influence of an assumed ionic conductivity distribution profile f(y) on the error in the estimation of total double-layer …

Poly (1-Trimethysilyl-1-Propyne) Membrane Regeneration Process, Andrei G. Fadeev, Michael M. Meagher
Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Faculty Publications
A novel process for the regeneration of PTMSP membranes is disclosed. The regeneration process includes washing a fouled PTMSP membrane with a solution containing at least about 50% butanol in water for a time sufficient to increase the flux and/or selectivity of the membrane. This regeneration process with a butanol containing solution significantly improves both the flux and selectivity of the PTMSP membrane and can regenerate the flux of the PTMSP membrane to the level of a previously unused membrane.
Membrane Ultrafiltration Of Treated Palm Oil Mill Effluent (Pome), Pui Wah Wong
Membrane Ultrafiltration Of Treated Palm Oil Mill Effluent (Pome), Pui Wah Wong
Student Works (2000-2009)
The common practice for treatment of palm oil effluent (POME) in Malaysia employs a combination of aerobic and an anaerobic treatment. Bearing in mind that the quantity of POME produced is high, reaching 740 000 m3 in May 2001, reuse and recycling of treated POME can be an excellent practice in terms of saving of water resources. As the treated POME is already low in certain parameters required by the Department of Environment (i.e. BOD, total and ammoniacal nitrogen, oil and grease), further treatment will greatly enhance the water quality. The purpose of the advance treatment step is to allow …

Diffusivities Of N-Alkanes In Silicalite By Steady-State Single-Crystal Membrane Technique, Orhan Talu, Matthew S. Sun, Dhananjai B. Shah
Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
A novel experimental technique that measures the diffusive flux through a single-crystal membrane (SCM) was developed and tested. Unlike all other macroscopic techniques that depend on a transient response, SCM is used under steady-state conditions, which results in a wide range of applicability from 10−2 to 10−11 cm2/s. Phenomenological equations for the steady-state data analysis were developed. The variation of driving force over the diffusion path is included in the model. As required by thermodynamics, the micropore concentration is given as a function of surface-excess amount adsorbed and gas density. The membrane configuration measures diffusivity in …

Adsorption Equilibrium Of Benzene-P-Xylene Vapor Mixture On Silicalite, Jianmin Li, Orhan Talu
Adsorption Equilibrium Of Benzene-P-Xylene Vapor Mixture On Silicalite, Jianmin Li, Orhan Talu
Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
Adsorption equilibrium of benzene-p-xylene vapor mixture on silicalite is measured at 70^oC with a specially designed cyclic volumetric apparatus at pressure levels of 2.53 and 1.20 kPa. The isobaric isotherms are S-shaped, and selectivity curves at different pressures cross over; the p-xylene selectivity at 2.53 kPa is higher than that at 1.20 kPa over a certain composition range. The heterogeneous ideal adsorption solution (HIAS) model implemented on two patches qualitatively predicts these highly unusual behavior. The observed extraodinary phenomena are attributed to structural heterogeneity, a result of the tight-fit of sorbate molecules in silicalite …
Longitudinal Study Of Plasma And Erythrocyte Selenium Levels In Type I Diabetic Children During Development And Treatment Of Ketoacidosis, Pi-Hsia Fan
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations
Most studies on the biological activity of selenium have focused on its role at the active site in the ubiquitous enzyme, glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) which catalyzes the removal of hydrogen peroxide and organic hydroperoxides (1). A connection between selenium deficiency and a wide range of diseases in animals and humans has been reviewed (2). Development of various forms of human cancer (3), failure of the immune system (4), as well as some cardiovascular diseases (5) have been reported or suspected to correlate with selenium deficiency. However, the physiological function of selenium in these different diseases is not fully understood, and …
