Pd-Based Hydrogen Separation Membranes Synthesized Via A Liquid-Phase Route, Chase W. Thompson
Pd-Based Hydrogen Separation Membranes Synthesized Via A Liquid-Phase Route, Chase W. Thompson
Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs
Palladium (Pd) membranes have gained significant attention for their ability to selectively separate hydrogen, a critical process for clean energy applications such as fuel cells and hydrogen storage. However, challenges such as grain growth, sintering, hydrogen embrittlement, and film uniformity limit their scalability and long-term stability. This thesis focuses on the controlled synthesis, deposition, and stability of Pd nanoparticles to optimize membrane performance for hydrogen separation. This work investigates solution-phase synthesis of Pd nanoparticles, focusing on temperature, precursor concentration, and solvent composition as key variables influencing particle growth and dispersion. Pd membranes were fabricated using nanoparticle deposition onto porous supports, …
Optimization And Dft Study For Boosted Electooxidation Of Formic Acid At Niox Modified Pt Using Urea Derivatives As Blending Fuels, Aya Saada
Biochemical Engineering
This paper addresses the enhancement of formic acid electrooxidation (FAO) at Pt and Pt-NiOx nanoparticles based-catalysts assisted with urea derivatives as blending fuels. Blending formic acid with various ratios of urea derivatives showed noticeable enhancements of FAO as demonstrated by a favorable negative shift of its onset potential (Eonset) and increase of its peak current density concurrently with suppression of the amount of CO poisoning reaction intermediate. Among all the used derivatives, phenyl urea (PU) showed superior enhancing effect towards the direct FAO with a minimal CO formation together with a favorable negative shift of Eonset by 150 mV. The …

Phosphorene is a promising candidate as a membrane material additive because of its inherent photocatalytic properties and electrical conductance which can help reduce fouling and improve membrane properties. The main objective of this study was to characterize structural and morphologic changes arising from the addition of phosphorene to polymeric membranes. Here, phosphorene was physically incorporated into a blend of polysulfone (PSf) and sulfonated poly ether ether ketone (SPEEK) doping solution. Protein and dye rejection studies were carried out to determine the permeability and selectivity of the membranes. Since loss of material additives during filtration processes is a challenge, the stability …
Microfiltration Membrane Pore Functionalization Approaches For Chloro-Organic Remediation To Heavy Metal Sorption, Mohammad Saiful Islam
Microfiltration Membrane Pore Functionalization Approaches For Chloro-Organic Remediation To Heavy Metal Sorption, Mohammad Saiful Islam
Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering
Microfiltration polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes have distinct advantage for open structure in terms of high internal surface area and ease of access in the pore domain. Functionalization of PVDF membranes with different functional groups (-COOH, -OH, -SH) enables responsive (pH, temperature) properties to membrane, tuning of effective pore size, controlling permeate flux. PVDF microfiltration membrane functionalization with suitable responsive polymer such as poly acrylic acid (PAA) to incorporate carboxyl (-COOH) group enables further modification of functionalized PAA-PVDF membranes for different application ranging from catalysis, bio reactor to heavy metal sorption platform. As a catalytic reactor bed, this PAA-PVDF membranes are …
