This study investigated the effects of daily and bi-weekly physical education on physical fitness and development of motor skills in mentally retarded boys. It also investigated the relationship of physical education and improvement in reading ability.

Twenty boys were selected from children attending special classes whose chronological ages ranged from nine to twelve and whose grade level was classified as fourth grade.

Analysis of the data indicated that the experimental group made significant gains over the control group in the Washington State Physical Fitness Test and Johnson's Fundamental Motor Skill Test for Elementary Children. The gains on the Informal Reading …

An Investigation Of The Influence Of Wrist Restriction In Shot Putting Among Selected Grade Levels Of Male And Female Subjects, Mary E. Delay

This paper presents an investigation of wrist flexion in the shot put by utilizing a device that restricts wrist flexion. Males and females from various grades acting as their own controls each put the shot six times with the wrist restricted and six times without the wrist restricted. Evaluation of the data was by the Fisher t test. Significance of difference occurred for some groups.

Recommendations included the same study repeated using only well skilled shot putters and subjects involved in a specific routine of resistance exercises for strengthening the wrist.

A Comparison Of Intelligence And Motivation With Basketball Ability, David Carl Klovdahl

This study attempted to determine if a correlation existed between intelligence, motivation and basketball ability of fifteen high school varsity basketball players. Intelligence quotients from the Lorge Thorndike Intelligence Scale, and scores from the Motivation Inventory Test were correlated with basketball ability (determined by a subjective rating system).

The results indicated there was no significant correlation between intelligence, motivation and basketball ability.

This study investigates flexibility (range of joint motion) as a potential attributer or deterrent of injury prevention in wrestling. College wrestlers were measured for flexibility of nineteen joint motions with the Leighton Flexometer. Injuries were recorded and correlations were calculated between flexibility and number of injuries and between flexibility and severity of injuries.

It appears that wrestlers with high range of flexibility will have fewer injuries.

Effects Of Physical Conditioning And Body Weight Changes Among College Wrestlers As Shown By Selected Cardiovascular Variables, Fred M. Andrew

Five cardiovascular tests were conducted at monthly intervals on varying numbers of Central Washington State College Wrestlers during the 1971-1972 season.

Results showed the wrestling group to be no different from a criterion population at the outset, but many significant differences were noted at subsequent test periods between wrestlers and the criterion population. No systematic association was found between percentage of weight loss and cardiovascular performance during the competitive season. A logical explanation for such lack of association was postulated.

One group of seventh grade girls learned a balance beam routine by videotape replay and another by traditional instructor-critique method. The difference between means was found to be not significant. The hypothesis was rejected that those performers judged highest and lowest would score significantly better in perception than those whose performance was judged as mid-range. Six of eight items of an attitudinal questionnaire revealed that attitudes toward being videotaped were significantly positive.

Comparison Of Health Characteristics Found Among Six Selected Migrant Groups In Primary Grades, Jill D. Land

Two hundred twelve migrant students in Chelan and Douglas County schools were screened in reference to fifty-two characteristics within seven health categories. A chi square analysis by contingency coefficient was made for each characteristic to compare differences between six selected groups in kindergarten and first grade and second and third grades. Significant differences between groups were found for two health characteristics in kindergarten and first grade and five health characteristics in second and third grades.

This study was an investigation of the impact an exploratory field trip experience had on sixth grade students' cognitive understanding of specific ecological concepts being taught by their respective instructor. The purpose of this study was to analyze the change in the cognitive level of students' classroom dialogue before and after being exposed to an exploratory field trip experience. Further, this study was to verify whether a significant change in the students' cognitive understanding of the ecological concepts had occurred as a result of a specific series of multi-sensory encounters in the out-of-doors.

Pupil control, one form of social control, has been identified as an indicator of the educational atmosphere in a school. In this study teacher perceptions of pupil control were measured by responses to the Pupil Control Ideology Form developed by Willower, Eidell, and Hoy. This form ranks teacher control ideology on a continuum from custodialism to humanism. Teachers in nine schools--three elementary, three junior high, and three senior high--in the Albuquerque Public School District served as subjects in this study. This paper presents a survey study of the present status of scouting in Washington, Class AA, high school wrestling. The study through the use of a questionnaire and personal interview, was designed to reveal the experience level of coaches, the use of scouting, and the method of scouting in Washington State. Complex chi square was used to evaluate the relationship between coaching experience and the use of scouting. The relationship did not prove significant at the five percent level.

The purpose of this study is to compare the attitudes of self-directed teachers toward the teaching of physical education in the elementary school as compared to teachers with the assistance of a physical education specialist.

Fifty-four teachers randomly selected from three schools were used in the study. The personal interview method was used to gather data, which included various areas that were assigned empirically into four categories. These included physical education values (comparative and philosophical), physical education teaching, planning and organizing, attitudes toward program responsibility and adequacy of professional materials and course.

Four cable tension strength and eight Cameron Heartometer measures were taken on fifteen members of the 1970-71 varsity wrestling team at Walla Walla High School to determine the effects of weight change on muscular strength and cardiovascular endurance. The wrestlers were grouped by three methods for analysis of data by the analysis of variance technique. Significant improvements in cardio-vascular endurance were found in three groups of wrestlers.

A Comparison Of The Bank And Rim Shots And Various Combinations From Selected Shooting Angles For College Students, Sam Willard

Twenty-three male college students were placed into one of four groups based upon a three minute shooting test. Each group had a specific shooting assignment and the students shot only those shots assigned. Group one consisted of seven shooting bank shots; group two, six shooting rim shots; group three, five shooting bank and rim shots; group four, five shooting bank or rim shots indiscriminately. All shots were taken from six designated angles and fifteen feet from the backboard.

The purpose of this study was to construct a physical fitness program for the needs of full-time missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Two groups, a control and experimental, were selected from the missionaries entering the Language Training Mission on February 16, 1972. The experimental group, consisting of thirty-two subjects, participated in a structured physical fitness class for seven weeks. The control group, consisting of twenty students, participated in no structured program. Each group took a pre- and post-test consisting of four strength factor tests and Cooper's twelve-minute run.

Mental health consultation to schools has become an important aid to teachers. The mental health con­sultation service described in this paper attempted to enlarge the teacher's awareness of his role in the de­velopment of children's personalities. The nursery school setting used in the study provided opportunities to focus attention on children's behavior patterns and the effect of the teacher's actions and attitudes on children. A consultant and eight teachers met bi-weekly to discuss individual children, parents, groups of children, problems of child behavior, and questions of teachers' attitudes.
