Graduate/undergraduate students lack time for consistent physical activity, leading to declines in fitness. Exercise snacks (ExSnck), short bouts of submaximal exercise performed throughout the day, may offer a solution. PURPOSE: To evaluate the effects of a 6-week upper body ExSnck program on endurance, strength, power, and enjoyment compared to a 1-set maximal exercise (MaxEx) protocol and a control group. METHODS: 43 participants were randomly assigned to ExSnck (n=15), MaxEx (n=16), or Control (n=12) groups. Waist circumference (WC) is a low-cost surrogate of central adiposity, but measurement error can limit athlete monitoring. PURPOSE: Evaluate inter-rater reliability of manual WC and agreement with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA)-derived WC in male collegiate rugby players. METHODS: Twenty-one male collegiate rugby players completed baseline testing (manual WC and DXA completed same day) following an overnight fast and euhydration. Trunk adiposity is a cardiometabolic risk factor that may relate to resting hemodynamics even in young athletic populations. PURPOSE: To examine associations between DXA-derived trunk percent fat and resting heart rate (HR) and blood pressure (BP) in male collegiate rugby union athletes. METHODS: Twenty-one male rugby athletes completed morning testing (06:00–09:00 h) following ≥12 h fast and post-void, with stimulants (including caffeine) restricted ≥12 h and no exercise ≥24 h. PURPOSE: Compare two published DXA-derived BV equations (Wilson vs Smith-Ryan) using whole-body Hologic DXA tissue masses in collegiate rugby union athletes. Background: Thermal strain results from extreme temperature exposures and is common among athletes that create conflicting physiological responses. However, little is known on how rapidly shifting the body from a heat-dissipating to a heat-conserving state impacts human physiologically and psychologically. Following eccentric exercise-induced muscle damage, knee extensor strength is substantially reduced but typically recovers toward baseline within 48-72 hours in healthy adults. Previous studies have not determined whether hydration status influences recovery following muscle damage, despite evidence that a 46.4% of university students are dehydrated, and 59% with inadequate water intake. Suggesting a high likelihood of suboptimal hydration at baseline. Although dehydration has been shown to negatively impact force production, its influence on post-exercise damage remains unclear. This study investigated strategies to enhance exercise engagement by examining the impact of music and social interaction. PURPOSE: To evaluate the effects of music and social interaction on hemodynamic, perceptual, and neuroendocrine responses during high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and blood flow restriction (BFR) training. Resistance exercise (RE) has been shown to improve glycemic control after a meal in type 2 diabetes (T2D) and prediabetes under controlled laboratory settings. PURPOSE: To investigate the effects of RE on glycemic control in a free-living environment. METHODS: This was a 4-arm randomized crossover study involving 22 participants with T2D (n=12) or prediabetes (n=10). The musculo-cardiopulmonary exercise test (mCPET) assesses neuromuscular performance during a standard ramp-incremental cycle ergometer exercise test using the addition of brief (5s), maximal effort isokinetic cycling power (Piso) measurements at baseline and intolerance. mCPET quantifies 4 additional variables: maximum voluntary isokinetic power (Baseline Piso); the fraction of Baseline Piso achieved at V̇O2peak (Aerobic Power Index, API); neuromuscular fatigability between baseline and intolerance Piso (Fatigue Index, FI); and the difference between peak ramp power and Piso at intolerance (Power Reserve, PR), reflecting the degree neuromuscular performance limits the exercise. CLINICAL PRESENTATION & EXAM: A patient with Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S) will often present symptoms of low energy availability (LEA), reduction in body weight (BW), fat mass (FM), and resting heart rate (RHR). In addition, there is disruption with gastrointestinal (GI) function and the menstrual cycle. RED-S symptoms typically start as LEA, then progress into decreased nutrient intake which can lead into the symptoms listed previously. CASE HISTORY: The patient is a 15-year-old male who presented with left hip pain of approximately 2 weeks in duration. The patient reported that the pain worsened with hip movement. He also described intermittent popping in the hip and pain radiating to the lateral thigh. The pain began before he fell and struck his hip 3 days ago. Despite using ibuprofen and Tylenol, the pain persisted with minimal relief. PHYSICAL EXAM: The patient appeared well-developed and well-nourished with no apparent distress. Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) is a rehabilitation technique for individuals with physical function limitations and mobility impairments, however, the potential for NMES to improve metabolic health is unclear. PURPOSE: To evaluate the acute and long-term effects of NMES on blood glucose and substrate utilization. METHODS: The study recruited forty-five sedentary overweight/obese participants (Age: 40 ± 13 years; BMI: 37 ± 7 kg/m2) with hyperglycemia (fasting glucose ≥ 100 mg/dL or 2-hour oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) value ≥ 140 mg/dL). E-cigarettes cause thermal degradation of liquid bases producing an inhaled vapor (“vaping”). Evidence suggests compounds produced during vaping, as well as the vaporized substance itself, cause lung damage and oxidative stress. Oxidative stress can be quantified through analysis of F2-8-isoprostanes, reactive species that initiate lipid peroxidation of arachidonic acid. Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is associated with widespread hyperglycemia-induced vascular damage, which affects both conduit and resistance arteries. This damage has been demonstrated by impaired vasodilatory responses to a 5-minute ischemic stimulus (flow-mediated dilation) and infusion of pharmacological vasodilators in patients with T1D. However, whether this vascular impairment affects blood flow regulation during steady-state exercise in T1D remains unclear. Sex differences in pulmonary, cardiovascular, or neuromuscular function may affect the development of neuromuscular fatigue and the primary mechanism of exercise intolerance. Unlike the standard cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET), the musculo-cardio-pulmonary exercise test (mCPET) uses isokinetic power (Piso) to directly assess neuromuscular performance and fatigue.
