The Effect Of Kindergarten Entrance Age On School Success In Kindergarten And First Grade In Selected Portsmouth Private Schools, Mary Lindsey H. Hester

Theses and Dissertations in Early Childhood Education

This two-year study compared kindergarten children by age and sex on cognitive development, emotional adjustment, and social development. A similar comparison was made of the sample at the end of their first grade year.

The sample (N=57) consisted of the total kindergarten enrollments of two private schools in Portsmouth, Virginia. Those children who had entered kindergarten before their fifth birthday were defined as "younger," and the remaining sample, "older."

The tool for measuring cognitive development was the Metropolitan Readiness Test in kindergarten, and the Metropolitan Achievement Test in first grade. A self designed developmental rating sheet was used both years …

2. Develop additional instructional resources to correlate with the Houghton Mifflin basal reading series grades 1, 2, and 3. Specifically created were alternative questioning strategies to aid early readers in the development of a process for comprehending written passages as they are reading.

These resources will be submitted for use in the author's local school district.

Leese Webster (1979) By Ursula K. Le Guin, Gareth B. Matthews Jan 1981

Leese Webster (1979) By Ursula K. Le Guin, Gareth B. Matthews

Picture Books

Leese was a spider, born in a palace throne room. Like other members of the “Webster” family, Leese knew how to spin an elegant and efficient web of traditional design. But then she started to produce webs of original designs like the flowers portrayed in the carpet and the huntsmen and hounds in a painting. Were these images pictures? Many animal species dance, adorn themselves, and build elaborate nests to attract mates. Can they be more and less aesthetically gifted? Authorities had Leese’s webs encased in glass and put on exhibit. Did that change their metaphysical status?

Teaching Self-Protective Behaviors To Preschool Children Using A Videotape Training Program, Paul James Yoder Dec 1980

Teaching Self-Protective Behaviors To Preschool Children Using A Videotape Training Program, Paul James Yoder

Masters Theses

This study investigated the effectiveness of a videotape training program to teach self-protective skills to preschool children. Children were taught to say, "I have to ask my teacher/parent," and to run to their teacher/parent when presented with one of two lures commonly used by child molesters. The videotape incorporated the direct instructional techniques of active pupil responding; the model, lead, and test format; and use of minimally different stimuli to teach children to discriminate between correct and incorrect responses. The results showed that although none of the subjects showed any improvement in responding after only one viewing, five of the …

A Study Of The Varying Degrees Of Creativity Manifested By Kindergarten Children From Open Or Traditional Classrooms, Susan Spelman Lewis Dec 1980

A Study Of The Varying Degrees Of Creativity Manifested By Kindergarten Children From Open Or Traditional Classrooms, Susan Spelman Lewis

Masters Theses

Visual and verbal techniques derived from Wallach and Kogan’s test of creative thinking abilities (1965) were administered to fifty-seven Title I kindergarten children from four different kindergarten settings in an attempt to assess the impact of open versus non-open situations on children's creativity. Classroom populations were similar socioeconomically, racially, and with regard to the student-teacher ratio. Kindergartens were chosen in order to test young children not influenced by other school situations. The degree of classroom openness was determined using Evans' Classroom Rating Scale (1971).

Creativity scores varied positively with the degree of classroom openness. Differences among the mean scores of …

Prototype And Distinctive Feature Processing In Young Children As Related To Nonsense Words, Janice Faye Wallace Aug 1980

Prototype And Distinctive Feature Processing In Young Children As Related To Nonsense Words, Janice Faye Wallace

Graduate Theses

Human learning processes have long been topics of interest and research. Two processes, prototype and distinctive feature, were investigated in 20 kindergarteners in two groups of 10 each. I hypothesized that the prototype processing group would perform better than the distinctive feature group because of the age and probable cognitive development of the children. Group El was given instructions and trained to form prototypes of verbally presented nonsense words for classification. Group Eli was directed and trained to determine distinctive feature rules of the same nonsense words for classification. A transfer design was used to test learning. El reflected prototype …
