An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Seriation And Classification Skills In Young Children, R'Delle Marie Anderson Jan 1978

An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Seriation And Classification Skills In Young Children, R'Delle Marie Anderson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The results of the Benziger Early Learning Assessment (BELA) classification and seriation subtests previously administered to 359 white, primarily middle-class preschool and primary grade school children were analyzed to determine the degree of relationship, interaction and parallelism between these two cognitive skills across age groups of children. In addition, the existence of any sex differences in performance was examined. The 359 children were grouped into three successive age groups at six-month intervals beginning with the age of four years and six months.

Results indicated that the relationship between seriation and classification, as measured by the BELA, was positive and quite …

A Hands-On Museum For Children, Stephanie Townsend

Graduate Theses

This paper concerns itself with the preparation for the development of a children's hands-on museum. Included is a definition of such a museum, a rationale for this type of museum, organizational considerations of a community museum, four exhibits intended to stimulate and guide children's cognitive processes, and a brief summation. The rationale for this children's museum is derived primarily from Piaget's theory of cognitive developmental psychology. Thus, the exhibits are exemplars of Piagetian curriculum. The organization section emphasizes Guthe's philosophy concerning museum organization.

A Study Of The River : Social Studies As The Core Of The Curriculum For Five And Six Year Olds, Carol Yahr Tucker

Graduate Student Independent Studies

Using social studies as the core of the curriculum is an effective educational framework for five and six year olds. When this curriculum starts with the children's life experiences and goes on to study some aspect of their community or environment, children can begin to understand the interconnectedness of the adult world. Young children feel the excitement of learning when they immerse themselves in a study; they find that learning can be a vital process related to their needs and experiences, rather than a dry transfer of skills and pre-existing bodies of knowledge.

Bear That Wasn't (1946/2010) By Arthur Frank Tashlin, Gareth B. Matthews

Picture Books

What happens when a bear wakes from hibernation to find his forest home has been replaced by a human factory? What if the bear can't convince the factory workers, vice presidents, or president that he is, in deed, a bear and shouldn't be put to work in the factory? In reviewing Frank Tashlin's The Bear that Wasn't, Gareth B. Matthews discovers philosophical themes including dreaming and skepticism, being and nonbeing, appearance and reality, and the foundations of knowledge.

Separate Factor Analyses Of The Iowa Test Of Preschool Development For Groups Of Black And White Children, Stephen Wayne Blake

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

In the present study the factor structure of the Iowa Test of Preschool Development (ITPD) was examined separately for black and white children to assess the construct validity of the ITPD scales for each racial group and the degree to which factor structures of the black and white groups were congruent. Since the ITPD is intended to be used as a basis for programs involving individual assessment and remediation of the problem areas identified, it is advantageous that its construct validity be established. Intercorrelations of the scaled scores on the eight level I skill area achievement indexes (ages 2 to …

The Integration Of Affective And Cognitive Concerns In Educational Programs, Elaine Avidon May 1975

The Integration Of Affective And Cognitive Concerns In Educational Programs, Elaine Avidon

Graduate Student Independent Studies

The social and political confrontations of the 1960's forced public school educators to reassess many of their values. Among the crucial issues which resurfaced as a result of this reassessment was the basic question of why some students were learning while others were not. This independent project addresses itself to that question. In particular, it presents one approach .which, when used responsibly, can alter the patterns of non-· learning that exist for so many young people attending schools today.

The integration of affective and cognitive concerns has been written about by many educators. It is also the topic of this …

The treatment program utilized both the group and tutorial approach emphasizing the basic skills associated with listening, language, reading, writing and arithmetic. The subjects were nine-preschool Head Start children participating in a summer program at Western Kentucky University. A comparison of the performance on pre and post test revealed …

Relationship Of Perception And Production Of /R/ In Three-Year-Old Children, Gloria Schuck Bronsema Jan 1974

Relationship Of Perception And Production Of /R/ In Three-Year-Old Children, Gloria Schuck Bronsema

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Much of the literature suggests a relationship, still obscure, between the production and perception of speech sounds. Investigators of speech perception have, for the most part, studied children of school age. This study, however, was concerned with the production and perception at one stage of development, i.e., at the threeyear-old level. Specifically, this investigator compared the perception of /r/ and /w/ words. Two groups of three-yearold children, sixteen who said /r/ correctly (called the r/r group}, and sixteen who substituted /w/ for /r/ (called the w/r group} were subjects in this study. The eight boys and eight girls in each …

Efficacy Of Reinforcement In An Observational Paradigm, Charles M. Krizic

Masters Theses

Study investigated the effectiveness of reinforcement in an observational paradigm where the dependent variable was indicated by increased morphological resemblance of an observer (O) after viewing a model (M). The stimulus was a series of novel responses recorded on videotape with each child viewing the tape individually. The subjects were 32 Head Start males divided into four groups. The first group was administered verbal praise prior to the modeling session. The second served as the vicarious reinforcement condition and observed an adult praise the model. The third group received direct reinforcement during the test for acquisition. The control group received …
