Todas Nosotras, Sutherland Jaramillo

Chamisa: A Journal of Literary, Performance, and Visual Arts of the Greater Southwest

Through the consideration of the figure of La Llorona in poetic narratives, these poems, which are selections from a self-produced collection of poetry in my Master’s Thesis "La Llorona in Nuevomexicana Poetic Narratives: Reflections on Writing and Memory," explore themes of identity, place, and memory, and offer a reflection on the role of women as storytellers and the possibility of reimagining the lore to tell the story of both La Llorona’s haunting liminality and empowerment.

Vernacular: New Connections in Language, Literature, & Culture

Vernacular: New Connections in Language, Literature, & Culture

The present paper aims to highlight the relationship between Don Quixote and his steed Rocinante, which constitutes a direct parallel that will be extrapolated to the iconographic plane, varying depending on the historical moment. To achieve this objective we will establish a chronology of the main illustrated editions of Don Quixote, which analyzes the most important images of each character based on the art and thought of the respective period. Finally, the characterization of Rocinante as a reflection of the hidalgo will be explored in order to deepen the relationship between the two and justify the parallels observed in the ...

Learning for ALL (LFA) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit based in Omaha, NE. LFA offers resources to adults in the community by offering a variety of classes in literacy, English language, and Adult Basic Education. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, much of the learning at LFA has transitioned to the online learning portal, Burlington English. However, the fact that Burlington English is presented and written in English poses a large barrier to the accessibility of online learning material. Current LFA management utilizes Google Translate to try and translate the steps to log into this platform and while a valuable ...

Seeking Asylum In A Modern Society: Global Responses To Latin American Migration, Rebecca Dickinson

Senior Honors Projects

The United States is no stranger to asylum seekers and refugees. The most famous seaport in the country houses a 305-foot-tall statue of a woman bearing a torch with words from the poem The New Colossus by Emma Lazarus etched at her feet: “‘Give me your tired, your poor, /Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.’”[1] The Statue of Liberty is a symbolic representation of open arms to immigrants from all walks of life. But if everyone is welcome, why do so few actually gain entrance?

US interventionism policies in the 20th century have defined the lives of millions ...

Los Zapatos, Zach Jenkins May 2021

Los Zapatos, Zach Jenkins

Microrrelatos (Flash Fiction) Collection

Quijano As Quijote: Decoding Madness Through Psychological Theory, Cristian Rivera Mar 2021

Quijano As Quijote: Decoding Madness Through Psychological Theory, Cristian Rivera

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis approaches Alonso’s Quijano’s conversion into Don Quijote from the point of view of a psychologist. The aim of this thesis is to explain the cognitive and psychological experiences that move Alonso Quijano to become Don Quijote and its impact in the development of our current studies of the mind. Thus, one specific question will direct my project although this question will be addressed using a multidisciplinary psychologist approach. The research question is “How can Alonso Quijano’s psychological experiences and interpretations of the real world be explained today?” This question will be addressed by referencing five ...

El Libro De Las Tres Razones, Obra «Estoriada», Mario Cossío Olavide Mar 2021

El Libro De Las Tres Razones, Obra «Estoriada», Mario Cossío Olavide

Translat Library

This article offers a typology of the five different kinds of lacunae present in Manuscript 6376 at the Biblioteca Nacional de España in Madrid, which contains most of the works of Juan Manuel. This article identifies the kinds of lacunae affecting the Libro de las tres razones and suggests that some of those blank spaces were meant to be devoted to illuminations that were never executed. This article also suggests that the Libro de las tres razones, as it stands before us now, is an incomplete copy of a lost historiated exemplar in which the author developed a visual support ...

Deconstructing Feminine And Feminist Fantastic Through The Study Of Living Dolls, Raquel Velázquez Mar 2021

Deconstructing Feminine And Feminist Fantastic Through The Study Of Living Dolls, Raquel Velázquez

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her "Deconstructing Feminine and Feminine Fantastic through the Study of Living Dolls," Raquel Velázquez analyzes the treatment of one idiosyncratic image within the fantastic genre, and one that also has a special impact on the configuration of the feminine: the doll. On the one hand, she examines the evolution of this fantastic motif in order to determine whether it involves a transformation of how the feminine fantastic is represented. On the other hand, she establishes some correlations between the image of the fantastic doll, and the development of processes such as the dollification of women or the humanization of ...

An Ember Of The Shining Path: A Content And Text Analysis Of The Peru People's Movement's "Sol Rojo" Magazine, Matthew A. Hughes

International Journal of Security Studies

Far-left terrorism rocked Latin America during the 1980s and 1990s, making that region the epicenter of global terrorism for fourteen years. Now, nearly three decades after the Shining Path collapsed under the Peruvian Government’s counter-insurgency efforts, remnants of the group continue to operate. While the brutality and carnage for which the Shining Path is known have subsided, factions disseminate propaganda calling for the “People’s War” and revolution. One such faction, the Peruvian People’s Movement, has published the magazine Sol Rojo [Red Sun] at a rate of about two editions since around 1994. This study examines content from ...

Desmitificando Un Nombre. Juana, “La Loca”, A Través De Su Representación Biográfica Y Dramática. Siglos Xviii-Xxi, Maria Carmen Vera Lopez

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The mythification of the character of Queen Juana I of Castile is the subject of this thesis. The biographical and literary representation are discussed from the biographical and literary perspectives which implies the study of two fundamental aspects in the formation of this myth: woman-power and madness. The main objective of this research is to break down the myth known today as Juana, “the mad” through historical and literary analyses.

This work is part of new Hispanic medievalism because it explains a phenomenon that began in the Middle Ages. The five chapters affirm that, in the case of Juana I ...

Using A Smart Phone To Learn Spanish: Does It Work And Will Students Use It?, Andrew J. Demil, Alysha Assaf, Ryan Cragun

The Coastal Review: An Online Peer-reviewed Journal

Over time, mobile devices have penetrated the classroom, requiring new and beneficial ways to implement classroom instruction. Research suggests that Short Message Service (SMS) based instruction is an effective tool for acquiring second language (L2) vocabulary and idiom knowledge (Hayati, Jalilifar, & Mashhadi; Lu,). Additionally, studies have found that students believe that mobile learning (m-learning) is beneficial to acquiring a second language (Cavus & Ibrahim; Hayati, Jalilifar, & Mashhadi; Lu, 2008). This study examined whether m-learning can lead to Spanish vocabulary familiarity and if sentence comprehension outperforms reading definitions. Participants were 29 native English speakers studying Spanish as a second language at the intermediate level. Learners ...

Ficción Y Cientificismo: Opendoor Y Paraísos De Iosi Havilio Y La Comemadre De Roque Larraquy” [Fiction And Scientism: Iosi Havilio’S Opendoor And Paraísos And Roque Larraquy’S La Comemadre], Martín L. Gaspar

Ganar Local: La Política Cantera Del Athletic Club Y La Construcción De Lo Vasco, Sam Orenstein Jan 2021

Ganar Local: La Política Cantera Del Athletic Club Y La Construcción De Lo Vasco, Sam Orenstein

Honors Theses

Cultural Resistance And Textual Emotionality In The Sahrawi Poetic Anthology Versahara, Alberto López Martín Dec 2020

Cultural Resistance And Textual Emotionality In The Sahrawi Poetic Anthology Versahara, Alberto López Martín

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

A group of Hispanophone Sahrawi poets founded their own Generación de la Amistad ‘Friendship Generation’ in Madrid in 2005. Ever since, Sahrawi poetry in Spanish has found in the anthology an ideal format to present itself to the Spanish reader, counting more than a dozen publications of poetry collections. Such profusion has nothing to do with the struggle for the cultural hegemony characteristic of other currents within the Spanish poetic field. By contrast, these collections keep to the anthologists’ double logic of cultural preservation and literary activism, which emphasize the communitarian character of their poetry. In this paper, I examine ...

Exhuming Labor: Alienation And Rural Affiliation In Spanish Migrant Poetry, Carlos Varón González Dec 2020

Exhuming Labor: Alienation And Rural Affiliation In Spanish Migrant Poetry, Carlos Varón González

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

One of the consequences of the 2008 financial crisis was that many young college graduates from the Spanish state left the country, faced with unemployment rates over 40% at home. Whereas Spanish economic growth before the crisis had pushed the narrative that a young generation was predisposed to transnational circulation, the experience of migration challenged the identification of large transnational cities as sites of emancipatory modernization. Fruela Instead, Fruela Fernández’s Una paz europea (A European Peace) and Lara Dopazo Ruibal’s ovella (sheep) point to them as the background to vulnerable, animalized, racialized, alienated bodies. The transnational city is ...

Dissident Poetry In Post-Crisis Spain: A Challenge To Fluidity, Olga Bezhanova Dec 2020

Dissident Poetry In Post-Crisis Spain: A Challenge To Fluidity, Olga Bezhanova

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

The global economic crisis of 2008-9 had an especially severe impact on Spain and resulted in the publication of many works of literature that address the effects and the causes of the crisis. Daniel Macías Díaz and Antonio Rómar, two contemporary Spanish poets, belong to different artistic generations, yet their response to the devastation caused by the economic collapse centers on a rejection of the neoliberal worldview that inspired the creation of the current economic system. The poets question the rhetoric of fluidity and mobility that accompanies the implantation of the neoliberal world order and call for the creation of ...
