Worship of the goddess Padmāvatī emerged more than a thousand years ago. This article explores three songs about her in Gujarati by Paṇḍit Vīrvijayajī (1773-1852). By analyzing the style and form of his work, one learns a great deal about devotional liturgies that commemorate goddess Padmāvatī’s protection of the Jina Pārśvanātha and, in turn, his protection of her.

Women’S Voices From History: Gond Rani Durgawati And Rani Lakshmibhai, Nandini Sengupta, Moupia Basu

Two strong women are compared and contrasted in this article. Gond Rani Durgawati (1524-1564) led a resistance movement in Jabalpur against the Mughal rule of Akbar. Rani Lakshmibai (1828-1858) organized the people of Jhansi against Sir Hugh Rose, an officer defending the interests of the British East India Company. Both women continue to be remembered for their bravery and their loyalty to the people they ruled.

Mai Bhago And Amrita Devi Bishnoi: Women Of Strength, Sowmya Ayyar

Mai Bhago (1670-1720), also known as Bhag Kaur, distinguished herself on the battlefield to defend the Sikh faith. Amrita Devi Bishnoi (d. 1730) is said to have sacrificed her life with 362 others to protect the Khejari trees in the Rajasthan desert. Both women continue to inspire social justice and ecological activism.

Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948) sought to alleviate poverty and empower women. His commitment to nonviolence and the economic ideal of “small is beautiful” continue to inspire grassroots movements around the globe. This article discusses the Chipko movement of northern India, the protection of rain forests in Kerala’s Silent Valley, the Self Employed Women’s Association (SEWA), and Medha Patkar’s valiant though ultimately futile attempt to save the Narmada River from a massive government damming project. The ongoing legacy of these movements can be found in AWAG, the Ahmedabad Women’s Action Group and Women’s Shanti Sena (Peace Force).

Indigenous Stitch-Arts Of India: Tradition And Revival In A Global Age, Punam Madhok

Stitch art allows for the creative expression and economic support of countless women throughout India. This article examines four notable styles: chikankari, flora and fauna stitched in white thread on fine white cotton, rabari, the stitching of mirrors into colorful cloth, phulkari, resplendent flowery motifs sewn into shawls in Punjab, and kantha, Bengali patch work yielding quilts and seating mats. In addition to describing each technique, this article discusses how women have been economically empowered through this art by such organizations as Self-Help Enterprise (SHE) in Kolkata and Adithi, a women’s cooperative, in Bihar.

ดุษฎีนิพนธ์นี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาลักษณะเฉพาะของงานนิพนธ์ทีปนีของพระสิริมังคลาจารย์อันเกิดจากการสืบทอดและสร้างสรรค์จากงานอรรถาธิบายภาษาบาลี และความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างงานนิพนธ์ทีปนีของพระสิริมังคลาจารย์กับงานนิพนธ์ภาษาไทยจานวน 10 เรื่องของพระพรหมโมลี (วิลาศ ญาณวโร) ผลการวิจัยพบว่า ทีปนีของบาลีของพระสิริมังคลาจารย์ทั้ง 3 เรื่องมีองค์ประกอบของวรรณคดีบาลีแบบเดียวกันกับปกรณ์วิเสส ประกอบด้วยคันถารัมภกถา นิทาน วรรณนา และนิคมนกถา มีรูปแบบอรรถาธิบายรวมทั้งสิ้น 16 วิธี มีการอธิบายศัพท์ 4 วิธี ได้แก่ (1) การอธิบายไวยากรณ์ (2) การแสดงรูปวิเคราะห์ (3) ปทวิจยะ และ (4) ไวพจน์ การอธิบายเนื้อหา 9 วิธี ได้แก่ (5) การตั้งประเด็นเพื่ออธิบาย (6) การขยายความ (7) การอ้างอิง (8) การแนะนาคัมภีร์เพิ่มเติม (9) การแสดงลักษณะ (10) การตั้งปุจฉา-วิสัชชนา (11) การอุปมา (12) การแสดงนิทานแสดงเหตุและตัวอย่าง (13) การสรุปประเด็น การอภิปรายข้อมูล 3 วิธี ได้แก่ (14) ตั้งประเด็นและชี้แจง (15) วิเคราะห์น้าหนักของหลักฐาน และ (16) นาเสนอความเห็น วิธีการเหล่านี้คือรูปแบบของปทวรรณนา, อัตถวรรณนา, และปกิณกวรรณนา ซึ่งเป็นหลักการอธิบายในวรรณคดีบาลี พระสิริมังคลาจารย์จัดโครงสร้างของนิทเทสให้เป็นระบบ เน้นวิธีการอธิบายและเพิ่มการอภิปรายด้วยวิธีอื่น จนเกิดเป็นแนวทางเฉพาะตัวในงานทีปนีของท่าน ส่วนงานนิพนธ์พุทธศาสนาภาษาไทยของพระพรหมโมลี เป็นงานเขียนเชิงวิชาการที่มีชื่อเรียก องค์ประกอบ และโครงสร้างวรรณนาแบบเดียวกับปกรณ์วิเสส พบรูปแบบของอรรถาธิบายในวรรณคดีบาลี และวิธีการทางวรรณกรรมไทย ดังนั้น จึงถือว่างานนิพนธ์ของพระพรหมโมลีได้รับอิทธิพลจากงานทีปนีของพระสิริมังคลาจารย์ส่วนหนึ่ง แม้รูปแบบอรรถาธิบายจะแสดงถึงอิทธิพลของวรรณคดีบาลีและทีปนีของพระสิริมังคลาจารย์ แต่ก็แสดงถึงความเป็นสากลของงานวิชาการที่จาแนกเป็นประเด็นย่อย และอธิบายด้วยการขยายความคาศัพท์ ความหมาย และประเด็น เพื่อให้ผู้อ่านเข้าใจ

วิทยานิพนธ์นี้มุ่งศึกษาเรื่องสงครามและยุทธวิธีในคัมภีร์อรรถศาสตร์และคัมภีร์กามันทกียนีติสาระเพื่อเปรียบเทียบสารัตถะพัฒนาการและความสัมพันธ์ของทั้งสองคัมภีร์ โดยแบ่งออกเป็น 6 ประเด็น ได้แก่ (1) สงคราม (2) ปัจจัยที่มีผลต่อการพิจารณายาตราทัพ (3) การสร้างค่ายหอรบ (4) การจัดกระบวนทัพ (5) การตอบโต้ และ (6) การต่อสู้ด้วยกลลวงผลการศึกษาพบว่า คัมภีร์อรรถศาสตร์เป็นการรวบรวมองค์ความรู้ทางนีติศาสตร์จากคณาจารย์ยุคก่อน และนำเสนอในมุมมองของตนเอง ส่วนคัมภีร์กามันทกียนีติสาระได้นำเสนอองค์ความรู้อ้างอิงคัมภีร์อรรถศาสตร์ เป็นการสืบทอดองค์ความรู้อย่างต่อเนื่องหลายศตวรรษ นอกจากนี้ประเด็นสำคัญที่ผู้วิจัยค้นพบคือ คัมภีร์กามันทกียนีติสาระมิใช่เป็นการนำคัมภีร์อรรถศาสตร์มาแต่งเป็นร้อยกรองเท่านั้น แต่เป็นการประมวลองค์ความรู้ทางนีติศาสตร์จากคณาจารย์ในยุคก่อนเช่นเดียวกับคัมภีร์อรรถศาสตร์ โดยมีเกาฏิลยะเป็นหนึ่งในคณาจารย์นั้น และได้มีการพัฒนาสร้างสรรค์องค์ความรู้จนเป็นแบบฉบับที่มีเอกลักษณ์เป็นของตนเองเรื่องสงครามและยุทธวิธีเป็นหนึ่งในวิธีการแสวงหาความรุ่งเรืองให้แก่อาณาจักร พระราชาที่เป็นผู้นำทัพจะต้องมีความสามารถในการวางแผน เพื่อเตรียมพร้อมรับมือกับสถาณการณ์ต่าง ๆ ได้เป็นอย่างดี ทั้งยังต้องเชี่ยวชาญการเดินทัพเพื่อโจมตีศัตรู และการใช้กลอุบายต่าง ๆ เพื่อแสวงหาความได้เปรียบ แม้อุบายนั้นจะผิดศีลธรรม ดังนั้นจึงแสดงให้เห็นว่าองค์ความรู้จากทั้งสองคัมภีร์สอนในเชิงปฏิบัติมากกว่าอุดมคติ โดยมองว่าทุกวิธีการที่ทำให้เกิดความได้เปรียบเป็นสิ่งชอบธรรม

พุทธธรรมในนิตยสารธรรมจักษุในสมัยสมเด็จพระมหาสมณเจ้า กรมพระยาวชิรญาณวโรรส ทรงเป็นบรรณาธิการ พ.ศ. 2437-2454 : ความเป็นมา สารัตถะ และบทบาทต่อพุทธศาสนาไทย, พระมหาสราวุธ โพธิ์ศรีขาม

วิทยานิพนธ์นี้ศึกษาพุทธธรรมในนิตยสารธรรมจักษุ ในสมัยสมเด็จพระมหาสมณเจ้า กรมพระยาวชิรญาณวโรรส ทรงเป็นบรรณาธิการ พ.ศ. 2437-2454 โดยศึกษาความเป็นมา สารัตถะ และบทบาทความสำคัญต่อพระพุทธศาสนาและสังคมไทย ผลการศึกษาความเป็นมาพบว่า นิตยสารธรรมจักษุ (พ.ศ. 2437-2454) เป็นนิตยสารทางพระพุทธศาสนาเล่มแรกของประเทศไทย ตีพิมพ์เป็นรายเดือน เผยแผ่ครั้งแรกเมื่อเดือนตุลาคม ปีพุทธศักราช 2437 ในสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว โดยสมเด็จพระมหาสมณเจ้า กรมพระยาวชิรญาณวโรรส (กรมหมื่นวชิรญาณวโรรส) ทรงเป็นผู้ก่อตั้งและบรรณาธิการรูปแรก มีพระเถรานุเถระ พระภิกษุสามเณรนิสิตของมหามกุฏราชวิทยาลัย และกลุ่มบุคคลต่าง ๆ ร่วมจัดทำ เพื่อใช้เป็นสื่อในการเผยแผ่พุทธธรรมที่เข้ากับสมัยนิยม ตามวัตถุประสงค์สำหรับเผยแผ่พุทธธรรมของมหามกุฏราชวิทยาลัย ผลการศึกษาด้านสารัตถะพุทธธรรมพบว่า เนื้อหาสารัตถะพุทธธรรมในนิตยสารธรรมจักษุ จำแนกออกเป็น 10 ประเภท ได้แก่ สารัตถะพุทธธรรมเกี่ยวกับ 1) คัมภีร์พระไตรปิฎก 2) สุภาษิตและนิทานชาดก 3) พระธรรมเทศนา 4) คำอนุโมทนา 5) หัวข้อกระทู้ธรรม 6) ตำนานและประวัติศาสตร์ 7) คัมภีร์ทางพระพุทธศาสนา 8) หลักธรรมสำคัญและหลักการปฏิบัติธรรม 9) พระคุณสมบัติของพระพุทธเจ้า และ 10) พระสูตรทางพระพุทธศาสนามหายาน สะท้อนให้เห็นมิติใหม่ของการเผยแผ่พุทธธรรมไปสู่สาธารณชน ด้วยการนำเสนอเนื้อหาสาระที่หลากหลาย เปิดโอกาสให้ผู้อ่านสามารถเข้าถึงวรรณกรรมทางพระพุทธศาสนามากยิ่งขึ้น ผลการศึกษาด้านกลวิธีนำเสนอสารัตถะพุทธธรรมพบว่า มี 5 รูปแบบ ได้แก่ 1) การใช้ภาษาแนวใหม่ 2) การจัดหมวดหมู่สารัตถะพุทธธรรม 3) การแปลความพระสูตรรูปแบบใหม่ 4) การนำเสนอพุทธสุภาษิตสั้น ๆ 5) การใช้โวหารวิธี คือ บรรยายโวหารวิธี พรรณนาโวหารวิธี ปุจฉาวิสัชนาวิธี สาธกโวหารวิธี และเทศนาโวหารวิธี เพื่อเป็นทางเลือกในการอ่านและศึกษาคำสอนทางพระพุทธศาสนา ผ่านมิติมุมมองด้านประวัติศาสตร์ ภูมิศาสตร์ และภาษาวรรณกรรม โดยประยุกต์หลักธรรมให้เหมาะสมแก่กาลและบริบทสังคม ผลการศึกษาด้านบทบาทและความสำคัญของนิตยสารธรรมจักษุต่อพุทธศาสนาในสังคมไทยพบว่า นิตยสารธรรมจักษุ เป็นเสมือนโรงธรรมสภาของพุทธศาสนิกชน สร้างพฤติกรรมการรับรู้พุทธธรรมใหม่ ๆ คือปรับเปลี่ยนรูปแบบการเข้าถึงหลักพุทธธรรมจากการฟังสู่การอ่าน เป็นสื่อของคณะสงฆ์ส่วนกลางในการจัดการเล่าเรียนหัวเมือง และเป็นสื่อกลางระหว่างพระพุทธศาสนา พระมหากษัตริย์ ชาติบ้านเมือง และประชาชน ซึ่งเป็นประโยชน์ต่อการเผยแผ่คำสอนของพระพุทธศาสนาและพัฒนาการศึกษาของบ้านเมืองอีกช่องทางหนึ่ง …

งานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาวิเคราะห์การอธิบายเรื่องนรกและสวรรค์ และหัวข้อธรรมที่อยู่เหนือประสาทสัมผัสที่เกี่ยวเนื่องกับเรื่องนรกและสวรรค์ ได้แก่ การเวียนว่ายตายเกิดและภพชาติ อมนุษย์ และปาฏิหาริย์ โดยเป็นการศึกษาวิจัยเชิงเอกสารจากธรรมบรรยายและหนังสือของสมเด็จพระพุทธโฆษาจารย์ ผลการศึกษาพบว่า เรื่องนรกและสวรรค์เป็นสิ่งที่ไม่อาจกล่าวถึงในแง่ของการมีหรือไม่มีโดยอ้างคัมภีร์ทางพระพุทธศาสนาโดยตรงได้ แต่ควรมีข้อพิจารณาและท่าทีการปฏิบัติต่อเรื่องนี้เข้ามาเกี่ยวข้องด้วย ท่านได้อธิบายเรื่องนรกและสวรรค์ แบ่งออกเป็น 3 ระดับ กล่าวคือ ระดับที่ 1 เป็นการกล่าวถึงนรกและสวรรค์โดยอ้างอิงพระไตรปิฎก ที่มีลักษณะเป็นภพภูมิที่รองรับผลของกรรมชั่วและกรรมดีหลังความตาย ระดับที่ 2 นรกและสวรรค์ซึ่งเป็นคุณภาพของจิตหรือภูมิจิตที่สืบเนื่องไปจากคุณภาพจิตในปัจจุบัน ระดับที่ 3 นรกและสวรรค์ที่เป็นการรับรู้อารมณ์ที่น่าพอใจและไม่น่าพอใจจากการรับอารมณ์ผ่านอายตนะทั้ง 6 ท่านพยายามเน้นการอธิบายนรกและสวรรค์ในระดับที่ 2 และ 3 โดยแสดงให้เห็นว่า มนุษย์ซึ่งอาจมีสภาพจิตที่หยาบหรือประณีตสามารถที่จะเข้าถึงหรือรับรู้อารมณ์ความสุขหรือความทุกข์ของภพภูมิที่มองไม่เห็นนั้นได้ เมื่อรับรู้แล้วก็ควรตระหนักถึงบทบาทของมนุษย์เองในการเป็นผู้สร้างเหตุให้เกิดผลดีหรือชั่วนั้น ส่วนการอธิบายในประเด็นอื่นที่เกี่ยวข้อง พบว่า มีแนวทางเดียวกัน คือการสอนจะต้องนำไปสู่ความเข้าใจหรือท่าทีที่เหมาะสม ซึ่งตอกย้ำหลักการในพระพุทธศาสนา ได้แก่ การพึ่งตนเองและความไม่ประมาทในชีวิต จนถึงการแก้ปัญหาความงมงายในสังคม ในการอธิบาย ท่านได้โยงกลับมาที่ตัวมนุษย์ซึ่งสามารถรับรู้สาระสำคัญของสิ่งที่อยู่เหนือประสาทสัมผัสนั้นด้วยตนเอง เช่น ความรู้สึกทุกข์หรือสุขที่สร้างได้ด้วยตนเอง ความไม่แน่นอนของชีวิต คุณภาพที่แตกต่างกันของมนุษย์ในสังคม ความน่าอัศจรรย์ที่บุคคลสร้างขึ้น นับว่าเป็นการสื่อสารธรรมที่เหนือประสาทสัมผัสได้โดยที่ไม่กระทบความหมายดั้งเดิมของธรรมนั้น

While conducting and representing autoethnography, these considerations raise ethical challenges for self and others. This expository paper examines and explores the various forms of the ethics of self and others in autoethnography in South Asian contexts. Furthermore, ethical positions in an autoethnographic inquiry are presented and explored by challenging the extant and exploring the possibilities. Generation Z, defined by the Pew Research Center as those born after 1997, is the least religious generation yet, according to a recent report from the American Survey Center. More than one-third of Generation Zers are religiously unaffiliated, along with 29 percent of Millenials, those born between 1981 and 1996. In addition to the birth and development of “Imperial Way Zen,” late Meiji Japan witnessed the emergence of a number of young lay Buddhist scholars, priests and activists who attempted, with varying success, to reframe Buddhism along progressive and occasionally radical political lines. While it is true that groups such as the New Buddhist Fellowship (Shin Bukkyō Dōshikai, 1899–1915) were made up mainly of young men associated with the two branches of the Shin (True Pure Land) sect, several of its members did affiliate themselves with Zen, such as Suzuki Daisetsu (1870–1966) and Inoue Shūten (1880–1945). This article explores a set of shared challenges that tend to emerge for East Asian Librarians in working with Buddhist studies materials. It outlines how Buddhist linguistic conventions can give rise to an unpredictability in reference work, how its historical textual practices can complicate collections development, and how Buddhist temple archive management can make traditional approaches to research advising unreliable. It also proposes that these challenges provide distinct opportunities for collaboration across Chinese, Japanese, and Korean areas of bibliographic coverage. In modern Western thought, pantheism remains a powerful if controversial undercurrent. Recent re-evaluations of the work of Baruch Spinoza (1632–1677) point to pantheism’s radical implications for metaphysics, epistemology, ethics and politics. Pantheism (Jp. hanshinron 汎神論) also has significant valence within Japanese Buddhist modernism, particularly in the work of scholars and lay activists who articulated the outlines of a New Buddhism (shin bukkyō 新仏教) from the 1880s through the 1940s. Studies the threefold hierarchy of certainty, from its origins in Mahāyāna Buddhism, through Islam, to 17^th century China. This tripartite scheme may be traced back to the ancient Buddhist scheme of the threefold wisdom as systematized by Vasubandhu of Gandhāra in the 4th-5th centuries CE. Following the advent of Islam in the 8th century, it was combined with Qur'anic notions of certainty (al-yaqīn). This paper explores how certain Buddhist-inspired principles such as impermanence of self and compassion for all (metta) and the practice of mindfulness can contribute to challenging ways in which young men adopt troublesome aspects of systemic patriarchy. When experiencing the natural motions of the grieving process, some individuals encounter an inability to pass this process by a phenomenon known as complicated grief. To deal with the cyclical trauma this causes, the human mind seeks to engage in addictive behaviors (both substantive and behavioral) that work to artificially and momentarily circumvent grief. This process, as it appears in George Saunders' experimental novel, Lincoln in the Bardo, reveals a depth of commentary on human attachments and grieving processes through the lives and narratives of ghosts found in the bardo.

The Rise of an Eco-Spiritual Imaginary reveals a shared ecological aesthetic among contemporary U.S. ethnic writers whose novels communicate a decolonial spiritual reverence for the earth. This shared narrative focus challenges white settler colonial mythologies of manifest destiny and American exceptionalism to instantiate new ways of imagining community across socially constructed boundaries of time, space, nation, race, and species. The eco-spiritual imaginary—by which I mean a shared reverence for the ecological interconnection between all living beings—articulates a common biological origin and sacredness of all life that transcends racial difference while remaining grounded in local ethnicities and bioregions.
