This dissertation is an interdisciplinary investigation of the imagination and the self that engages with cognitive science, philosophy of mind, Buddhism, ethical theories, and a variety of perspectives from Asian and Western philosophy. I address the following questions in three interrelated chapters. First, what does it mean for the self to appear in imagination? In Chapter 1, against certain narrow understandings of the self in philosophy of language, I build a multidimensional model of the self in imaginative experiences to capture the rich phenomenology, drawing on empirical findings on memory and imagination. This thesis investigates the soteriological implications of Nāgārjuna’s doctrine of emptiness (śūnyatā) as presented in the Mūlamadhyamakakārikā (MMK), or Root Verses of the Middle Way. While Nāgārjuna’s radical denial of intrinsic existence (svabhāva) is widely recognized as a masterful critique of metaphysics, modern scholarship remains divided on whether this "right view" can sufficiently ground the Buddhist Path to Liberation. This project centers on a comparative analysis of two prominent modern interpretations: Jay Garfield’s semantic anti-dualism and Giuseppe Ferraro’s anti-metaphysical realism.

Sangha: Displacement and Memory in Nikkei Dena explores how layered displacements have shaped the Nikkei (Japanese-American) community in Altadena and Pasadena (Dena), CA, and how Nikkei resist forces of displacement and ‘unbelonging’ through cultural practice, community care, and memory-work at the Pasadena Buddhist Temple. This thesis examines the journey of the kapāla, a Tibetan Buddhist ritual skull cup, from a sacred implement to a global commodity. It argues that the modern identity, display, and commercial value of the kapāla in the Western world are not a natural extension of its original religious meaning but are fundamentally a product of its aesthetic and political re-creation by the Qing imperial court. This thesis traces the evolving symbolism of the Naga motif (a mythic water serpent) in Northeast Thailand through a framework I call meta-motion, which maps symbolic persistence of this cultural signifier and boundary marker across four cultural horizons—animist (Z), Hindu–Khmer (B), Buddhist (A), and modern/global (C). Like electrons in quantum super position, symbolic motifs circulate as overlapping “waves” of potential meaning and are concretized into cultural “particles” only when recruited for specific ritual, commercial, or political purposes. Amidst the urban landscape of Kyoto, Japan, there are thousands of hokora, small neighborhood shrines. This study uses social theories of pilgrimage and space to examine the articulation of hokora, community, and personal desire. As sites of local pilgrimage, hokora form networks of communal, but also individual, aspirations across the urban spiritual landscape of the city. This thesis argues that communities are connected to the larger social structures of Kyoto through hokora. Measuring 22 hectares, the layout of the monastery is quadrangular shaped, reaching a height of approximately eighty feet above ground level. Physically this monastery provides an excellent example of the workmanship and design principles of the Pala Dynasty of 8th-century Bengal. วิทยานิพนธ์เรื่องนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาวิเคราะห์แนวคิดและวิธีการการปฏิบัติกรรมฐานของธรรมยุติกนิกาย และความเป็นธรรมยุติกนิกายจากข้อสังเกตที่ได้จากวรรณกรรม คือ จากพระราชนิพนธ์และงานนิพนธ์ของคณะผู้ร่วมก่อตั้งจำนวน 4 ท่าน ซึ่งแต่งขึ้นในปีพุทธศักราช 2367-2438 ได้แก่ (1) วชิรญาณภิกขุุ หรือ พระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว (2) สมเด็จพระมหาสมณเจ้า กรมพระยาปวเรศวริยาลงกรณ์ (3) สมเด็จพระวันรัต (ทับ พุุทฺธสิริ) และ (4) พระธรรมไตรโลกาจารย์ (เดช ฐานจาโร) ผลการศึกษาพบว่า การทำกรรมฐานเกี่ยวพันกับการพัฒนาตนตามหลักไตรสิกขา กรรมฐานที่ปรากฏในวรรณกรรมมีจุดมุ่งหมายเพื่อพระนิพพาน ช่วยเจริญสมาธิและปัญญาของผู้ปฏิบัติตามคติในคัมภีร์พระพุทธศาสนาเถรวาท ทั้งยังสร้างสำนึกทางพระพุทธศาสนา กรรมฐานที่นำเสนอมีทั้งสมถะและวิปัสสนา สมถกรรมฐานเน้น “จตุรารักขกรรมฐาน” อันได้แก่ พุทธานุสติ เมตตาพรหมวิหาร มรณานุสติ และอสุภสัญญา ในระยะแรก ภายหลัง จึงแสดงวิธีการอื่นตามแนวทางของคัมภีร์วิสุทธิมรรค ส่วนวิปัสสนากรรมฐานเน้นการพิจารณาขันธ์ 5 โดยความเป็นของไม่เที่ยง เป็นทุกข์ และมิใช่ตัวตน วรรณกรรมกรรมฐานทำให้ความรู้เรื่องกรรมฐานเข้าถึงได้ด้วยการอ่าน ผู้ปฏิบัติกรรมฐานสามารถฝึกฝนโดยไม่ต้องพึ่งพาพระวิปัสสนาจารย์ ทำให้กรรมฐานเป็นข้อปฏิบัติสำหรับผู้ปฏิบัติให้เข้าถึงไตรสิกขา ทั้งยังเป็นเครื่องช่วยเตือนสติและให้ความรู้ในการดำเนินชีวิตตามคติพระพุทธศาสนา การปฏิรูปแนวทางกรรมฐานตามแนวทางดังกล่าวแสดงให้เห็นความเป็นธรรมยุติกนิกายในระยะแรกที่ยังคงเป้าหมายพระนิพพาน ความเชื่อมั่นในวิจารณญาณในการคัดสรรและประยุกต์คำสอนพระพุทธศาสนาให้เหมาะสมกับยุคสมัย และการรับวิทยาการจากตะวันตก ภายหลังเมื่อคณะธรรมยุตมีสถานะมั่นคงขึ้นโดยได้รับการยอมรับจากชนชั้นนำจนให้จัดการศึกษาคณะสงฆ์ วรรณกรรมกรรมฐานบางเล่มใช้เป็นหนังสือเรียนในหลักสูตร ทำให้กรรมฐานแบบโบราณที่เคยปฏิบัติสืบต่อมาค่อย ๆ สูญหายไป

วิทยานิพนธ์นี้มุ่งศึกษาเรื่องสงครามและยุทธวิธีในคัมภีร์อรรถศาสตร์และคัมภีร์กามันทกียนีติสาระเพื่อเปรียบเทียบสารัตถะพัฒนาการและความสัมพันธ์ของทั้งสองคัมภีร์ โดยแบ่งออกเป็น 6 ประเด็น ได้แก่ (1) สงคราม (2) ปัจจัยที่มีผลต่อการพิจารณายาตราทัพ (3) การสร้างค่ายหอรบ (4) การจัดกระบวนทัพ (5) การตอบโต้ และ (6) การต่อสู้ด้วยกลลวงผลการศึกษาพบว่า คัมภีร์อรรถศาสตร์เป็นการรวบรวมองค์ความรู้ทางนีติศาสตร์จากคณาจารย์ยุคก่อน และนำเสนอในมุมมองของตนเอง ส่วนคัมภีร์กามันทกียนีติสาระได้นำเสนอองค์ความรู้อ้างอิงคัมภีร์อรรถศาสตร์ เป็นการสืบทอดองค์ความรู้อย่างต่อเนื่องหลายศตวรรษ นอกจากนี้ประเด็นสำคัญที่ผู้วิจัยค้นพบคือ คัมภีร์กามันทกียนีติสาระมิใช่เป็นการนำคัมภีร์อรรถศาสตร์มาแต่งเป็นร้อยกรองเท่านั้น แต่เป็นการประมวลองค์ความรู้ทางนีติศาสตร์จากคณาจารย์ในยุคก่อนเช่นเดียวกับคัมภีร์อรรถศาสตร์ โดยมีเกาฏิลยะเป็นหนึ่งในคณาจารย์นั้น และได้มีการพัฒนาสร้างสรรค์องค์ความรู้จนเป็นแบบฉบับที่มีเอกลักษณ์เป็นของตนเองเรื่องสงครามและยุทธวิธีเป็นหนึ่งในวิธีการแสวงหาความรุ่งเรืองให้แก่อาณาจักร พระราชาที่เป็นผู้นำทัพจะต้องมีความสามารถในการวางแผน เพื่อเตรียมพร้อมรับมือกับสถาณการณ์ต่าง ๆ ได้เป็นอย่างดี ทั้งยังต้องเชี่ยวชาญการเดินทัพเพื่อโจมตีศัตรู และการใช้กลอุบายต่าง ๆ เพื่อแสวงหาความได้เปรียบ แม้อุบายนั้นจะผิดศีลธรรม ดังนั้นจึงแสดงให้เห็นว่าองค์ความรู้จากทั้งสองคัมภีร์สอนในเชิงปฏิบัติมากกว่าอุดมคติ โดยมองว่าทุกวิธีการที่ทำให้เกิดความได้เปรียบเป็นสิ่งชอบธรรม

วิทยานิพนธ์นี้ศึกษาพุทธธรรมในนิตยสารธรรมจักษุ ในสมัยสมเด็จพระมหาสมณเจ้า กรมพระยาวชิรญาณวโรรส ทรงเป็นบรรณาธิการ พ.ศ. 2437-2454 โดยศึกษาความเป็นมา สารัตถะ และบทบาทความสำคัญต่อพระพุทธศาสนาและสังคมไทย ผลการศึกษาความเป็นมาพบว่า นิตยสารธรรมจักษุ (พ.ศ. 2437-2454) เป็นนิตยสารทางพระพุทธศาสนาเล่มแรกของประเทศไทย ตีพิมพ์เป็นรายเดือน เผยแผ่ครั้งแรกเมื่อเดือนตุลาคม ปีพุทธศักราช 2437 ในสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว โดยสมเด็จพระมหาสมณเจ้า กรมพระยาวชิรญาณวโรรส (กรมหมื่นวชิรญาณวโรรส) ทรงเป็นผู้ก่อตั้งและบรรณาธิการรูปแรก มีพระเถรานุเถระ พระภิกษุสามเณรนิสิตของมหามกุฏราชวิทยาลัย และกลุ่มบุคคลต่าง ๆ ร่วมจัดทำ เพื่อใช้เป็นสื่อในการเผยแผ่พุทธธรรมที่เข้ากับสมัยนิยม ตามวัตถุประสงค์สำหรับเผยแผ่พุทธธรรมของมหามกุฏราชวิทยาลัย ผลการศึกษาด้านสารัตถะพุทธธรรมพบว่า เนื้อหาสารัตถะพุทธธรรมในนิตยสารธรรมจักษุ จำแนกออกเป็น 10 ประเภท ได้แก่ สารัตถะพุทธธรรมเกี่ยวกับ 1) คัมภีร์พระไตรปิฎก 2) สุภาษิตและนิทานชาดก 3) พระธรรมเทศนา 4) คำอนุโมทนา 5) หัวข้อกระทู้ธรรม 6) ตำนานและประวัติศาสตร์ 7) คัมภีร์ทางพระพุทธศาสนา 8) หลักธรรมสำคัญและหลักการปฏิบัติธรรม 9) พระคุณสมบัติของพระพุทธเจ้า และ 10) พระสูตรทางพระพุทธศาสนามหายาน สะท้อนให้เห็นมิติใหม่ของการเผยแผ่พุทธธรรมไปสู่สาธารณชน ด้วยการนำเสนอเนื้อหาสาระที่หลากหลาย เปิดโอกาสให้ผู้อ่านสามารถเข้าถึงวรรณกรรมทางพระพุทธศาสนามากยิ่งขึ้น ผลการศึกษาด้านกลวิธีนำเสนอสารัตถะพุทธธรรมพบว่า มี 5 รูปแบบ ได้แก่ 1) การใช้ภาษาแนวใหม่ 2) การจัดหมวดหมู่สารัตถะพุทธธรรม 3) การแปลความพระสูตรรูปแบบใหม่ 4) การนำเสนอพุทธสุภาษิตสั้น ๆ 5) การใช้โวหารวิธี คือ บรรยายโวหารวิธี พรรณนาโวหารวิธี ปุจฉาวิสัชนาวิธี สาธกโวหารวิธี และเทศนาโวหารวิธี เพื่อเป็นทางเลือกในการอ่านและศึกษาคำสอนทางพระพุทธศาสนา ผ่านมิติมุมมองด้านประวัติศาสตร์ ภูมิศาสตร์ และภาษาวรรณกรรม โดยประยุกต์หลักธรรมให้เหมาะสมแก่กาลและบริบทสังคม ผลการศึกษาด้านบทบาทและความสำคัญของนิตยสารธรรมจักษุต่อพุทธศาสนาในสังคมไทยพบว่า นิตยสารธรรมจักษุ เป็นเสมือนโรงธรรมสภาของพุทธศาสนิกชน สร้างพฤติกรรมการรับรู้พุทธธรรมใหม่ ๆ คือปรับเปลี่ยนรูปแบบการเข้าถึงหลักพุทธธรรมจากการฟังสู่การอ่าน เป็นสื่อของคณะสงฆ์ส่วนกลางในการจัดการเล่าเรียนหัวเมือง และเป็นสื่อกลางระหว่างพระพุทธศาสนา พระมหากษัตริย์ ชาติบ้านเมือง และประชาชน ซึ่งเป็นประโยชน์ต่อการเผยแผ่คำสอนของพระพุทธศาสนาและพัฒนาการศึกษาของบ้านเมืองอีกช่องทางหนึ่ง …

งานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาวิเคราะห์การอธิบายเรื่องนรกและสวรรค์ และหัวข้อธรรมที่อยู่เหนือประสาทสัมผัสที่เกี่ยวเนื่องกับเรื่องนรกและสวรรค์ ได้แก่ การเวียนว่ายตายเกิดและภพชาติ อมนุษย์ และปาฏิหาริย์ โดยเป็นการศึกษาวิจัยเชิงเอกสารจากธรรมบรรยายและหนังสือของสมเด็จพระพุทธโฆษาจารย์ ผลการศึกษาพบว่า เรื่องนรกและสวรรค์เป็นสิ่งที่ไม่อาจกล่าวถึงในแง่ของการมีหรือไม่มีโดยอ้างคัมภีร์ทางพระพุทธศาสนาโดยตรงได้ แต่ควรมีข้อพิจารณาและท่าทีการปฏิบัติต่อเรื่องนี้เข้ามาเกี่ยวข้องด้วย ท่านได้อธิบายเรื่องนรกและสวรรค์ แบ่งออกเป็น 3 ระดับ กล่าวคือ ระดับที่ 1 เป็นการกล่าวถึงนรกและสวรรค์โดยอ้างอิงพระไตรปิฎก ที่มีลักษณะเป็นภพภูมิที่รองรับผลของกรรมชั่วและกรรมดีหลังความตาย ระดับที่ 2 นรกและสวรรค์ซึ่งเป็นคุณภาพของจิตหรือภูมิจิตที่สืบเนื่องไปจากคุณภาพจิตในปัจจุบัน ระดับที่ 3 นรกและสวรรค์ที่เป็นการรับรู้อารมณ์ที่น่าพอใจและไม่น่าพอใจจากการรับอารมณ์ผ่านอายตนะทั้ง 6 ท่านพยายามเน้นการอธิบายนรกและสวรรค์ในระดับที่ 2 และ 3 โดยแสดงให้เห็นว่า มนุษย์ซึ่งอาจมีสภาพจิตที่หยาบหรือประณีตสามารถที่จะเข้าถึงหรือรับรู้อารมณ์ความสุขหรือความทุกข์ของภพภูมิที่มองไม่เห็นนั้นได้ เมื่อรับรู้แล้วก็ควรตระหนักถึงบทบาทของมนุษย์เองในการเป็นผู้สร้างเหตุให้เกิดผลดีหรือชั่วนั้น ส่วนการอธิบายในประเด็นอื่นที่เกี่ยวข้อง พบว่า มีแนวทางเดียวกัน คือการสอนจะต้องนำไปสู่ความเข้าใจหรือท่าทีที่เหมาะสม ซึ่งตอกย้ำหลักการในพระพุทธศาสนา ได้แก่ การพึ่งตนเองและความไม่ประมาทในชีวิต จนถึงการแก้ปัญหาความงมงายในสังคม ในการอธิบาย ท่านได้โยงกลับมาที่ตัวมนุษย์ซึ่งสามารถรับรู้สาระสำคัญของสิ่งที่อยู่เหนือประสาทสัมผัสนั้นด้วยตนเอง เช่น ความรู้สึกทุกข์หรือสุขที่สร้างได้ด้วยตนเอง ความไม่แน่นอนของชีวิต คุณภาพที่แตกต่างกันของมนุษย์ในสังคม ความน่าอัศจรรย์ที่บุคคลสร้างขึ้น นับว่าเป็นการสื่อสารธรรมที่เหนือประสาทสัมผัสได้โดยที่ไม่กระทบความหมายดั้งเดิมของธรรมนั้น

The Rise of an Eco-Spiritual Imaginary reveals a shared ecological aesthetic among contemporary U.S. ethnic writers whose novels communicate a decolonial spiritual reverence for the earth. This shared narrative focus challenges white settler colonial mythologies of manifest destiny and American exceptionalism to instantiate new ways of imagining community across socially constructed boundaries of time, space, nation, race, and species. When it comes to assessing the historicity of religious figures, the methodology used by the academy is severely outdated, disjointed, and unsound. Bayes' Theorem, first used with a historical analysis by Richard Carrier in 2014 in relation to the historicity of Jesus, is a methodologically sound vehicle with which to examine what we have all simply, in the past, accepted. งานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาวิเคราะห์และเปรียบเทียบติตถิยปริวาสในพระไตรปิฎกกับการรับเข้าอุปสมบทในวัดป่านานาชาติด้วยการศึกษาจากตัวบทและภาคสนาม ผลการศึกษาพบว่า ประเพณีทั้งสองมีความมุ่งหมายคัดกรองบุคคลนอกพุทธศาสนาที่มีความตั้งใจจริง เคารพศรัทธาในพระรัตนตรัย มีคุณสมบัติเหมาะสมที่จะอุปสมบทเป็นพระภิกษุ และสามารถปรับตัวเข้ากับวิถีชีวิตในคณะสงฆ์ เพื่อเป็นพระภิกษุตลอดชีวิต ในขณะเดียวกันก็เป็นโอกาสให้ผู้ขออุปสมบทได้ศึกษาหลักธรรมคำสอนและปรับตัวกับวิถีชีวิตของพระภิกษุด้วย ความแตกต่างสำคัญคือบุคคลที่เข้ามาอุปสมบทในวัดป่านานาชาติเป็นชาวต่างชาติซึ่งไม่คุ้นชินกับวัฒนธรรมพุทธศาสนาไทย กระบวนการรับเข้ามีเป้าหมายเพื่อให้ความรู้และเคยชินกับการใช้ชีวิตตามแนวทางของวัดป่าในไทยซึ่งต้องอยู่อย่างเรียบง่าย ภายใต้อาณัติของพระอาจารย์ จึงต้องใช้ระยะเวลานานกว่าติตถิยปริวาสและไม่แน่นอน ขึ้นอยู่กับคุณสมบัติของแต่ละบุคคล ขั้นตอนที่ซับซ้อนในวัดป่านานาชาติแสดงถึงการประยุกต์ประเพณีในพระไตรปิฎกและประเพณีไทยให้เข้ากับสถานการณ์ปัจจุบัน เพื่อเปิดโอกาสให้บุคคลภายนอกวัฒนธรรมพุทธศาสนาที่ต้องการเข้ามาอุปสมบทได้ทดลองการใช้ชีวิตพระภิกษุในพุทธศาสนา เพื่อประโยชน์ของคณะสงฆ์และบุคคลที่ขออุปสมบทเอง
