Samuel Johnson’s The History of Rasselas, Prince of Abyssinia is ironically most often classified as an “oriental philosophic tale,” but is rarely analyzed from the point of view of oriental philosophy. Although Buddhism’s ambiguities, inwardness, and nothingness, provoke anxiety in Western critique, Johnson’s The History of Rasselas, Prince of Abyssinia does something unique from eighteenth-century British thought in that it disavows this Buddaphobia by actively employing a similar line of thought. This research gathered requirements from Thai and foreign tourists to successfully design Thai and English Android and IOS versions of a mobile application to provide an enhanced experience for tourists visiting the Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan (PMW) Temple in Thailand. The content and user interface were designed based on theories and related research and three experts evaluated the prototype to improve the final application versions which were evaluated at the temple by Thai and foreign tourists. In this thesis, I analyze the use of beer (Tib. chang) in Tibetan tantric Buddhism and emphasize its importance for studying themes of purity and pollution, meaning, and power in this context. In doing so, I argue that beer functions as a social marker and influences gender dynamics in Tibet. Beer also functions as a religious ritual tool for transactions of power. Lastly, beer is present as a multivalent symbol in Tibetan tantric songs and stories, useful as both a negative and positive metaphor for qualities or states of mind. "Out of 547 Jātaka stories, eight describe the caṇḍālas.1 Out of these eight stories, half contain passing references about this social class, but at least four are stories where the protagonists themselves are caṇḍālas. In those four stories which are centred around this class, three are comparatively longer stories, including the famous Mātaṅga-Jātaka (No. 497). These are probably the most elaborate descriptions of this social group from the early historic period. The project was built to grow and nurture a two-way exchange between complementary systems of knowledge. The purpose of this thesis is to comprehensively explore Theravāda missionary activity. The philological, textual, theoretical, and ethnographic methods used to investigate the historical, sociopolitical, religious, and ethical aspects of early Theravāda, the U.S. Vipassanā (Insight) meditation movement, and modern Burmese Theravāda revealed nuanced meanings in the descriptions of these adherents’ endeavors with respect to proselytizing, converting, and the concept of missionary religions. By exploring the secular features that contributed to their religious appearances, a more developed contextualization of Theravāda “activity” reshapes understandings of the larger concept of missionary religions. Conventionally, the first Muslim-Buddhist encounters are thought to have taken place in the context of the Arab-Muslim expansions into eastern Iran in the mid-seventh century, the conquest of Sind in 711 and the rise of the Islamic empire. Hugging mom is unconventional in a traditional Vietnamese family. I write this piece to articulate my thoughts to describe different ways to look at the meanings of hugging. During my writing process, I use a walking meditation as a Buddhist practice to calm my mind so that I can see my true self and a clearer picture of different layers of the act of hugging. The recent literature on Nāgārjuna’s catuṣkoṭi centres around Jay Garfield’s (2009) and Graham Priest’s (2010) interpretation. It is an open discussion to what extent their interpretation is an adequate model of the logic for the catuskoti, and the Mūla-madhyamaka-kārikā. Priest and Garfield try to make sense of the contradictions within the catuskoti by appeal to a series of lattices – orderings of truth-values, supposed to model the path to enlightenment. They use Anderson & Belnaps's (1975) framework of First Degree Entailment. Cotnoir (2015) has argued that the lattices of Priest and Garfield …

Jayavarman VII (ca. 1120–1218) is one of the best known Cambodian “Angkor” leaders, in part because he was able to unite the numerous small, fragmented Khmer Cambodian and Cham kingdoms of the day. He ruled his consolidated Khmer kingdom from 1181–1218, bringing the decentralized Khmer and Cham states together through political and military alliances. Religion, especially India-derived Brahmanism, or “Hinduism,” Mahāyāna Buddhism, and local Cambodian religion, was a key component of Khmer society. Over time different Khmer rulers endorsed one or more of the religious systems to their own advantage. Jayavarman VII was especially committed to Mahāyāna Buddhism, evidenced by …

The Taiwanese Buddhist monastics in this study confront negative stereotypes that dominate within their wider societal context, and they challenge these stereotypes by positing counter-narratives. After exploring the monastics’ interest in proselytizing both to me and to a wider audience as a context that influences the interview encounter, this chapter focuses on the monastics’ response to negative stereotypes and their endeavors to craft a new, positive image of monastics. The distinction between “calm” (Pāli: samatha; Sanskrit: śamatha) and “insight” (P: vipassanā; Skt: vipaśyanā) is one of several ostensibly related dichotomies that have exerted a significant influence on classical and contemporary understandings of Buddhist practices, institutions, and history, as well as of the Buddhist path(s) to and conception(s) of awakening. However, scholars continue to debate whether Buddhists ever conceptualized two (or more) different paths or conceptions of this goal. Multiple searches hunt for extraterrestrial life, yet the ethics of such searches in terms of fossil and possible extant life on Mars have not been sufficiently delineated. In response, in this essay I propose a tripartite ethic for searches for microbial Martian life that consists of default nonharm toward potential living beings, default nonharm to the habitats of potential living beings, but also responsible, restrained scientific harvesting of some microbes in limited transgression of these default nonharm modes. This thesis examines the depiction of the Bodhi Tree, a common Buddhist symbol. Bodhi tree simply means tree of enlightenment and Buddha Shakyamuni reached enlightenment while in meditation beneath the particular tree species of ficus religiosa, or sacred fig. Though the sacred fig tree, as a native tree to India, has historically held significance, today it is principally known for its association with the Buddha, particularly his single most important life event, his enlightenment.

As is well known to contemporary scholarship and demonstrated by the works contained in the present volume, the Tibetan term zhentong (gzhan stong, being empty of other) refers not to any one unanimous view or system of thought but to a wide variety of philosophical theories formed primarily in India and Tibet. เรื่องเล่าราหูในสื่อสมัยใหม่ : การสร้างสรรค์และบทบาทในบริบทสังคมพุทธศาสนาไทย, ภัทรธรณ์ แสนพินิจ

วิทยานิพนธ์มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาการสร้างสรรค์เรื่องเล่าราหูในสื่อสมัยใหม่และวิเคราะห์บทบาทในบริบทสังคมพุทธศาสนาไทย เรืองเล่าราหูในสื่อสมัยใหม่ที่ศึกษามีทั้งหมด 45 แหล่ง ทั้งจากสื่อสิ่งพิมพ์ ได้แก่ หนังสือและนิตยสาร มี 17 แหล่ง และสื่อดิจิทัล ได้แก่ เว็บไซต์, เฟซบุ๊กและยูทูบ มี 28 แหล่ง ผลการศึกษาพบว่าเรื่องเล่าราหูในหนังสือรวบรวมเรื่องของราหูฉบับเต็มและเป็นแหล่งข้อมูลต้นตอของเรื่องเล่าราหูในสื่ออื่นๆ เรียบเรียงขึ้นใหม่โดยอิงกับตำนานราหูจากวรรณคดีพราหมณ์-ฮินดู, วรรณคดีพุทธศาสนา และวรรณกรรมไทยด้วยกลวิธี 3 แบบ ได้แก่ (1) ตัดต่อ, (2) ปรับเปลี่ยนเนื้อหาโดยการดัดแปลงกับขยายความ และ (3)สร้างเรื่งอเล่าขึ้นใหม่ การตัดต่อคือการเลือกตำนานสำคัญเพื่ออธิบายภูมิหลังและชูบทบาทของราหูในเรื่องเล่า ได้แก่ ตอนกำเนิดเทพนพเคราะห์และตอนบุพกรรมกับพระอาทิตย์และพระจันทร์จากเฉลิมไตรภพ, พระพุทธเจ้าทรมานราหูจากจันทิมสูตรและสุริยสูตร ราหูฟังธรรมและได้รับพุทธพยากรณ์จากอรรถกถาโสณทัณฑสูตร การปรับเปลี่ยนเนื้อหาคือการดัดแปลงตำนานที่มีอยู่เดิมมาอธิบายเพิ่มเติมเพื่อให้ราหูมีภาพลักษณ์ที่ดี เป็นเทพที่ควรได้รับการบูชาในพุทธศาสนา ตำนานที่ดัดแปลง ได้แก่ ตอนราหูดื่มน้ำอมฤตเพื่อแสดงว่าราหูมิได้เป็นผู้กระทำความผิด และตอนที่ได้รับพุทธพยากรณ์ การสร้างขึ้นใหม่เป็นเล่าที่มาของสถานะความเป็นเทพของราหู และประสบการณ์บุคคลซึ่งไม่อิงกับตำนานที่มีอยู่เดิม ได้แก่ โชคลาภจากราหู และความศักดิ์สิทธิ์ของเครื่องราง เรื่องเล่าราหูในสื่อดิจิทัลมีพื้นที่จำกัดจึงมีเฉพาะตอนสำคัญ ได้แก่ กำเนิดและพงศ์พันธุ์, การลักดื่มน้ำอมฤต, การพบพระพุทธเจ้าและได้รับพุทธพยากรณ์, และการร่วมรจนาบทนะโม เรื่องเล่าราหูในสื่อสมัยใหม่มีบทบาทสำคัญทำให้ตำนานราหูจากวรรณคดีศาสนาและวรรณกรรมไทยเป็นที่รู้จักในสังคมไทยปัจจุบัน ช่วยสร้างเสริมความมั่นใจของผู้บูชา รับรองหรือสนับสนุนการบูชาราหูทั้งในแง่อามิสบูชาและปฏิบัติบูชา และช่วยอธิบายรูปแทนและเครื่องรางพระราหูที่ถูกสร้างขึ้นภายหลัง รวมถึงพิธีทรงเจ้าซึ่งอ้างว่าราหูเข้าร่างทรงเพื่อช่วยเหลือมนุษย์ ทั้งหมดนี้สะท้อนให้เห็นบทบาทของตำนานเทพปกรณัมในศาสนาพราหมณ์-ฮินดูซึ่งเป็นพื้นฐานของตำนานเทวดาในพุทธศาสนาในการสร้างเรื่องเล่ารองรับความเชื่อและพิธีกรรมเกี่ยวกับผีและวิญญาณในพุทธศาสนาปัจจุบัน

ปอุมจริยะของวิมลสูริเป็นวรรณคดีเรื่องรามายณะที่เก่าแก่ที่สุดของศาสนาเชนและมีอิทธิพลต่อรามายณะฉบับของศาสนาเชนฉบับอื่นที่แต่งขึ้นภายหลัง วรรณคดีเรื่องรามายณะของศาสนาเชนจัดอยู่ในวรรณคดีเรื่องเล่าประเภทปุราณะหรือจริตะ มีเนื้อหาเกี่ยวข้องกับแนวคิดศลากาปุรุษะซึ่งเป็นแนวคิดเกี่ยวกับวีรบุรุษในศาสนาเชน วิทยานิพนธ์นี้มุ่งศึกษาลักษณะเด่นของตัวละครราวณะในเรื่องปอุมจริยะ ซึ่งเป็นตัวละครปรปักษ์ของเรื่อง และศึกษาความสัมพันธ์ของแนวคิดทางศาสนาเชนที่มีต่อตัวละครราวณะ ผลการศึกษาพบว่าลักษณะเด่นของราวณะในปอุมจริยะแบ่งเป็น 4 ด้าน ได้แก่ ลักษณะเด่นด้านรูปลักษณ์, ลักษณะนิสัย, ลักษณะเด่นด้านความสามารถ และลักษณะเด่นด้านลบจากมุมมองของตัวละครอื่น ลักษณะเด่นเหล่านี้ของราวณะมีทั้งด้านดีและด้านร้าย สะท้อนมิติตัวละครที่เป็นมากกว่าตัวละครปรปักษ์ผู้ประพฤติแต่ความชั่ว แต่ยังมีลักษณะวีรบุรุษผู้ทรงคุณธรรมซึ่งสอดคล้องกับบทบาทของราวณะในฐานะเชนศาสนิกผู้มีความภักดีต่อพระชินะ แนวคิดทางศาสนาเชนที่มีความสัมพันธ์ต่อตัวละครราวณะได้แก่แนวคิดทางจริยศาสตร์และแนวคิดเรื่องศลากาปุรุษะ กรอบแนวคิดทางจริยศาสตร์แบบเชนแสดงให้เห็นการสร้างตัวละครปรปักษ์ให้เป็นแบบอย่างของผู้ครองเรือนที่ไม่อาจรักษาอนุพรตไว้ได้อย่างสมบูรณ์ และท้ายสุดเมื่อสิ้นชีวิตต้องตกนรกเพราะกรรมที่ได้ทำไว้ ซึ่งเป็นภาพตรงกันข้ามกับตัวละครเอกคือพระรามผู้ประพฤติตามหลักศาสนาและตามหลักอหิงสา เมื่อถึงบั้นปลายของชีวิตก็ได้ออกบวชบำเพ็ญตบะจนบรรลุความหลุดพ้น ในขณะที่กรอบแนวคิดเรื่องศลากาปุรุษะมีอิทธิพลในการดัดแปลงบทบาทของตัวละครให้ต่างออกไปจากรามายณะฉบับของศาสนาพราหมณ์-ฮินดู ตามแนวคิดศลากาปุรุษะ ราวณะเป็นประติวาสุเทวะซึ่งเป็นคู่ขัดแย้งกับพระลักษมณ์ผู้เป็นวาสุเทวะ ประติวาสุเทวะจะถูกวาสุเทวะสังหารด้วยจักรของตนเอง ส่วนพระรามเป็นพลเทวะผู้ประพฤติอหิงสาและจะบรรลุความหลุดพ้น ในขณะที่ทั้งวาสุเทวะและประติวาสุเทวะจะต้องตกนรกเพราะกรรมที่ได้กระทำไว้ จึงนับได้ว่ากรอบแนวคิดทั้งสองข้างต้นเป็นปัจจัยสำคัญที่ทำให้ปอุมจริยะเป็นรามายณะของศาสนาเชนอย่างแท้จริง

วิทยานิพนธ์นี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาคติเรื่องการอุทิศบุญในประเพณีเกี่ยวกับชีวิตจากวรรณคดีพระพุทธศาสนาภาษาบาลีที่สำคัญ และพิธีกรรมความเชื่อที่ยึดถือปฏิบัติในปัจจุบัน วรรณคดีพระพุทธศาสนาที่ใช้ศึกษา ได้แก่ พระไตรปิฎก อรรถกถา มิลินทปัญหา มาเลยยเทวัตเถรวัตถุ และมังคลัตถทีปนี ส่วนพิธีกรรมความเชื่อศึกษาจากบทกรวดน้ำที่ใช้ในพิธีและคำอธิบายของพระอาจารย์ที่มีชื่อเสียง 8 รูป ผลการศึกษาพบว่าพระไตรปิฎกมีความคิดเรื่องการอุทิศบุญจากการถวายทานแด่เทวดาหรือญาติผู้ล่วงลับ ในชั้นอรรถกถาเป็นต้นไป การอุทิศบุญถือว่าเป็นการทำบุญอย่างหนึ่งหลังจากการทำบุญใด ๆ ซึ่งผู้รับส่วนบุญจะต้องรับรู้และอนุโมทนา ในประเพณีไทย การอุทิศบุญอยู่ในช่วงที่พระภิกษุสงฆ์สวดอนุโมทนาบุญและผู้อุทิศบุญกรวดน้ำ บทกรวดน้ำที่ใช้ในประเพณีไทยมีเนื้อหาและความคิดสอดคล้องกับวรรณคดีพระพุทธศาสนาในชั้นอรรถกถา ส่วนคำอธิบายเรื่องการอุทิศบุญของพระภิกษุร่วมสมัยมีส่วนที่เหมือนและแตกต่างจากวรรณคดีพระพุทธศาสนา กล่าวคือ มีทั้งท่านที่อธิบายตามคัมภีร์พระพุทธศาสนา, ท่านที่แสดงรายละเอียดเพิ่มเติมโดยอาศัยประสบการณ์ทางจิต, และท่านที่ไม่ให้ความสำคัญกับการอุทิศบุญอันเป็นผลจากการเน้นคำสอนอื่นที่สำคัญ แสดงให้เห็นว่าความคิดเรื่องการอุทิศบุญในสังคมไทยมีความหลากหลายในภาพรวม การอุทิศบุญยังคงมีความสำคัญในประเพณีเกี่ยวกับชีวิตของไทย เป็นการบำเพ็ญกุศลแก่ญาติผู้ล่วงลับรวมไปถึงมิตรสหายที่รู้จัก เจ้ากรรมนายเวร ทั้งสรรพสัตว์ต่าง ๆ ในโลก จึงถือว่าเป็นการทำบุญอย่างหนึ่งที่ไม่จำกัดขอบเขตและให้ผลมาก
