This paper deals with koan practice of silence through analyzing the Korean Zen Buddhist film, Why Has Boddhidharma Left for the East? (Bae, Yong-Kyun, Why Has Bodhidharma Left for the East? 1989). This paper follows Kibong's path along with the Buddha's journey of 1) departure, 2) journey in the middle way, and 3) returning with a particular focus on koan practice of silence as the transformative element of enlightenment. Analyzing silence throughout the film, this paper studies the Seon Buddhist lifestyle in an aesthetic way and finds a philosophical understanding of interdependency of samsara and nirvana. International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

Based on the author’s nearly 50 years of meditation, it is observed that as a given alternative state is accessed and used over the span of years, experiences and capacities within that state are not merely static but may themselves shift as a practitioner develops neuropsychologically. An ethnographer using a substance within the context of a cultural practice may gain helpful direct insights into that cultural practice, but the researcher may fail to realize that the state attained by a novice may be substantively different from that gained by an elder or shaman with years of experience in the practice. …

The secularization thesis, rooted in the idea that “modernity” brings with it the destruction—or, at least, the ruthless privatization—of religion, is clearly grounded in specific, often oversimplified, interpretations of Western historical developments since the eighteenth century. In this article, I use the case of the New Buddhist Fellowship (Shin Bukkyō Dōshikai 新仏教同志会) of the Meiji period (1868–1911) to query the category of the secular in the context of Japanese modernity. The work manifests in the form of paintings, drawings, and light sculptures. Meditation and mindfulness training are a large part of my influence and interests. This paper describes the influence of the Tokugawa government on religious life in Japan. It focuses on the religious traditions of Buddhism, Shintoism, and Neo-Confucianism and how the state used these religions to their advantage. The Tokugawa had strict control over all aspects of Japanese life including religion and this paper explores that.

This research paper presents the results of a quantitative and qualitative survey of Chinese Christians from Buddhist backgrounds, with a special focus on the Christian response to life trials, since, in Buddhism, any spiritual or physical adversity tends to be attributed to bad Karma from one’s past. The biggest aim of the research is to investigate more effective ways of leading Chinese people to Christ. The survey focuses mainly on three aspects of the respondents’ conversion stories: (1) their backgrounds, (2) their life changes after conversion, and (3) their inter-religious perspectives. Although New Buddhism is a term sometimes employed to refer to the broad sweep of reform and modernization movements in Japanese Buddhist thought and practice beginning in the 1870s, the term shin bukkyō refers more specifically to a broadly influential movement of some two dozen young scholars and lay Buddhists active in the last decade of the Meiji period (1868–1912). Founded in February 1899 as Bukkyō Seito Dōshikai (Buddhist Pure Believers Fellowship or Buddhist Puritan Association), the group changed its name to Shin Bukkyō Dōshikai (New Buddhist Fellowship) in 1903. According to Mahāyāna Buddhism as seen in the Lotus Sūtra and many other Buddhist texts revered in Chinese and other East Asian traditions, the Buddha used his insight into each individual’s capacity for understanding, to tailor his teachings about how they should proceed toward overcoming suffering. For this reason, the Buddha is sometimes called the Great Physician, having the ability to diagnose an individual’s case and prescribe a specific remedy. This is the Buddha’s skillful means or skill-in-means (upāya), his expertise in crafting a personal plan for liberation. This paper examines what has been described as the most basic and essential element of Kūkai’s (774-835) religio-philosophical system (Yamasaki 1988:190), meditation on the Sanskrit syllable ‘A’. According to Shingon Buddhist tradition, Kūkai introduced the meditation on the syllable ‘A’ (hereafter referred to as the Ajikan) into Japan in the early 9th century, at the time he transmitted the Shingon Dharma to that country from China. Materials clearly showing the origin and development of the Ajikan before Kūkai’s time have either not been discovered or have not been analyzed in relationship to the Ajikan. Bhikṣuṇī Shig Hiu Wan was a Buddhist master in more than one sense of the word. She was not only a highly accomplished practitioner, teacher, artist, and poet, but she was also a feminist pioneer in higher education. When she arrived in Taiwan in 1966 and began teaching at the Chinese Cultural University, she was the first Buddhist nun to teach at the university level in Taiwan. During his long writing and teaching career, Śākya Chokden (1428-1507) developed a novel, and in many respects unusual approach to the key systems of Buddhist thought and practice. A recurrent theme given special attention in his numerous works is the question of the relationship between conflicting conceptual models of ultimate reality and the means of its realization on the one hand, and practical outcomes of utilizing those models in contemplative practice on the other. From their beginning, Friends have benefited from the religious ideas and spiritual practices of other communities.1 Such influences and confluences have always been a sign of spiritual openness and vitality among religious communities across history. Where, for example, would Augustine of Hippo, the most influential theologian in the history of Western Christianity, be without the insights of the pagan Neoplatonist philosopher Plotinus? พาณะเป็นกวีสันสกฤตในสมัยต้นคริสต์ศตวรรษที่ 7 ผู้มีชื่อเสียงจากการประพันธ์ร้อยแก้วเรื่องกาทัมพรีและหรรษจริต แต่งานร้อยกรองของพาณะยังไม่มีผู้ใดศึกษา รวมทั้งยังมีร้อยกรองอีกจำนวนหนึ่งที่เชื่อกันว่าอาจเป็นผลงานของพาณะแต่ก็มิอาจระบุผู้แต่งได้อย่างชัดเจน วิทยานิพนธ์นี้จึงมุ่งศึกษาวัจนลีลาในร้อยกรองของพาณะตามแนววัจนลีลาศาสตร์และทฤษฎีรีติ และนำวัจนลีลาที่ได้มาวิเคราะห์บทประพันธ์ร้อยกรองที่มีปัญหาผู้แต่งว่าเป็นไปได้หรือไม่ที่จะเป็นผลงานของพาณะ ข้อมูลที่นำมาศึกษาจึงประกอบด้วยร้อยกรองกลุ่มที่ยอมรับกันว่าเป็นของพาณะโดยไม่มีข้อขัดแย้ง และร้อยกรองที่มีปัญหาผู้แต่งอีก 68 บท ผลการศึกษาพบว่า ร้อยกรองของพาณะมีวัจนลีลาที่โดดเด่น ได้แก่ การใช้ยมกขนาดสั้น การใช้อนุปราสะอย่างแพรวพราว เศลษะ การวางคำกริยาไว้ข้างหน้าบาท สมาสยาว ประโยคยาว การใช้ฉันท์ที่สอดคล้องกับความหมายของบทประพันธ์ และการข่มผู้อื่น สอดคล้องกับวัจนลีลาในร้อยแก้วที่เคยมีผู้ศึกษาไว้แล้ว ถึงแม้ว่าวัจนลีลาเหล่านี้บางประการอาจพบในผลงานของกวีร่วมสมัยคนอื่นด้วย แต่งานร้อยกรองของพาณะก็มีลักษณะโดดเด่นที่ไม่พบในงานของกวีร่วมสมัย ได้แก่ การใช้เศลษะที่แปลได้ 3 ความหมาย การใช้ประพันธสรรพนามตัวเดียวในบทประพันธ์ และการข่มผู้อื่นทั้งทางตรงและทางอ้อม การวิเคราะห์วัจนลีลาดังกล่าวทำให้เข้าใจลีลาภาษาของพาณะได้ชัดเจนตรงกับความเป็นจริงมากกว่าการใช้ทฤษฎีรีติซึ่งเกิดขึ้นทีหลังงานประพันธ์ของพาณะและมุ่งเน้นวิเคราะห์และจัดกลุ่มลีลาการใช้ภาษาให้เป็นแบบใดแบบหนึ่ง เมื่อนำวัจนลีลาที่ได้มาวิเคราะห์ร้อยกรองที่มีปัญหาผู้แต่งทั้ง 68 บท ผลปรากฏว่า ร้อยกรองเหล่านี้อาจแบ่งออกได้เป็น 4 กลุ่ม เรียงตามลำดับความสอดคล้องกับวัจนลีลาดังกล่าวจากมากไปหาน้อย กล่าวคือ มีร้อยกรองจำนวน 6 บทที่มีความเป็นไปได้มากว่าจะเป็นผลงานของพาณะเนื่องจากมีลักษณะภาษาตรงกับวัจนลีลาที่วิเคราะห์ได้จากร้อยกรองของพาณะเป็นอย่างมาก ส่วนร้อยกรองอีก 34 บทมีความเป็นไปได้พอสมควรที่จะเป็นร้อยกรองของพาณะ เพราะวัจนลีลาค่อนข้างตรงกัน ขณะเดียวกันก็มีร้อยกรองจำนวน 26 บทที่เป็นไปได้น้อยว่าจะเป็นงานของพาณะ เพราะ วัจนลีลาตรงกันน้อย นอกจากนี้ยังมีร้อยกรองอีก 2 บทที่สรุปไม่ได้ว่าเป็นผลงานของพาณะ จากการศึกษาทำให้เห็นว่า ลีลาภาษาของกวีนับเป็นหลักฐานเชิงประจักษ์ที่ปฏิเสธไม่ได้ ลีลาในร้อยกรองที่ไม่มีปัญหาผู้แต่งสามารถนำมาเป็นเครื่องมือช่วยพิสูจน์ร้อยกรองที่มีปัญหาเรื่องผู้แต่งได้ และอาจแก้ข้อสงสัยในประวัติวรรณคดีสันสกฤตได้ในระดับหนึ่ง

This dissertation is an intellectual history tracing developing notions of the Self in Buddhism through Buddhist publications during the years from 1899-1957. I define this time period as the Era of the Yellow Peril, due to common views in the United States of an Asian “other” which formed a larger clash of civilizations globally. 1899-1957 was marked by pessimism and dread due to two World Wars and the Great Depression, while popular and academic cultures argued for the validity of race sciences, and the application of these “sciences” through eugenics.
