The Marches Of Alberico De Caprio (1865-1943): Director Of The Los Angeles Gas And Electric Company Band And Portland Rose Festival Band, Ali A. Memarian
CGU Theses & Dissertations
The marches of Alberico De Caprio are themselves a history of the early 20th century American West, and the archetypal immigrant story long missing among famed American bandleaders. Significant pieces include the official anthem of the Los Angeles County Fair, Portland Rose Festival, score for a Paramount Pictures pre-code era feature film and a march written for President Theodore Roosevelt. This dissertation will expand scholarship on band music by giving a detailed biography of De Caprio and the ensembles under his direction, a list of his marches, and editions of six of his most historically significant marches.
Adapting The Ipa Systems Of Korean Diction To Classical Vocal Method: A Critical Study, Clara N. Lee
Adapting The Ipa Systems Of Korean Diction To Classical Vocal Method: A Critical Study, Clara N. Lee
CGU Theses & Dissertations
While the IPA is helpful in learning Korean diction, it is not sufficient when applied to classical singing techniques, especially for non-native Korean speakers. To be able to clearly distinguish the ambiguity of sounds of the language, using proper and accurate phonetic symbols are necessary. The author compares speaking and singing in the Korean language by analyzing the contrast of its phonetics and articulating positions and then phonologically describes the IPA symbols. Both singing and speaking are forms of phonation and communication, and the same IPA symbols are often used for both singing and speaking. However, the phonation circumstances and …
Curricular Change In Collegiate Programs: Toward A More Inclusive Music Education, Bryan Powell, Donna Hewitt, Gareth Dylan Smith, Beatrice Olesko, Virginia Davis
Curricular Change In Collegiate Programs: Toward A More Inclusive Music Education, Bryan Powell, Donna Hewitt, Gareth Dylan Smith, Beatrice Olesko, Virginia Davis
School of Music Faculty Publications
Despite decades of discussion, debate, and incremental gains, acceptance of popular music education in collegiate institutions is still in its inception. Higher education (and indeed, education in general) in the United States is rife with pervasive inequality and injustice, excluding large numbers of potential students on the basis of race, class, income, and cultural orientation. If music education is to continue and thrive in the 21st century and beyond, widespread curricular changes are needed in preservice music teacher education to move toward a model that is inclusive, equitable, diverse, and culturally responsive. The purpose of this paper is to illuminate …
Más Allá Del Nacionalismo: Fronteras Disciplinarias De Los Estudios Musicales Centroamericanos [Beyond Nationalism: Disciplinary Frontiers Of Central American Music Studies], Andrés R. Amado
School of Music Faculty Publications

Silent Chill: A Spectral Analysis Of Akira Yamaoka’S Silent Hill 2 Original Soundtrack, Casey Nicole Atkinson
Theses : Honours
Silent Hill 2 (2001) is a psychological-survival horror game for the Sony Playstation 2 console, described as one of the greatest video games of all time. The game, as well as the original soundtrack by Akira Yamaoka, continue to have an active and dedicated cult following, with the soundtrack garnering millions of plays across streaming platforms. In particular, the ambient pieces in the soundtrack are very popular, colloquially described altogether as Silent Chill. Despite its popularity, few have systematically described the soundtrack’s unique characteristics or its ongoing influence and relevance to soundtrack composition today. It is suggested that timbral analysis …

Adult Education Movements In The U.S.: Past And Current Paradigms That Shape Adult Piano Study In The 21st Century, Casey Loudin
Piano Pedagogy: Masters Research Projects
The lyceum and chautauqua movements reveal how adults in the United States have been interested in continuing their education since 1826. These two general educational movements provided continuing education for adults in all walks of life. Developing an awareness of past and present paradigms in adult education can provide a road map for piano teachers to better relate to adult students who continuously desire the following benefits: accessibility to education, fulfilling musical experiences and improved mental and psychological health. While adults who enroll in group music lessons may not be traditional, adolescent students, they are an important part of today's …

Modern Science And Ancient Wisdom: Tools For The 21st-Century Musician, Seth Quay
Piano Pedagogy: Masters Research Projects
Throughout human history, music has served as a powerful tool for healing, often associated with cultural ceremony, ritual and meditation. The emergence of the Music Therapy profession in the 20th century continues to utilize the medicinal effects of music as an aid in treating psychological and physical ailments. Advanced research methods now allow us to study the brain and nervous system alongside the acoustics of music to discover principles for meaningfully applying music as therapy. How can musicians apply these principles, through practice, performance, programming, and teaching, to reach larger audiences - reaching more than the typical single-person audience of …
Theorizing Trikāla: A Generalized Intervallic Approach To Pulse Transformation In South Indian Carnatic Music, Robert L. Wells
Theorizing Trikāla: A Generalized Intervallic Approach To Pulse Transformation In South Indian Carnatic Music, Robert L. Wells
Music
The rich rhythmic/metric construction of South Indian Carnatic music is characterized, in large part, by intricate interplay between an internalized metric cycle called the tāḷa and performed phrases that may generate expressive tension with this tāḷa. Thus, informed listeners, who track the tāḷa using standardized hand gestures (kriyās), may experience substantial internal tension. A common source of such tension is trikāla technique, in which the performed pulse unit expands or contracts over constant tāḷa. While trikāla has been thoroughly described performatively, historically, and culturally, it has received little attention within the music-theoretic realm. Thus, this paper seeks to …

Out Of The Froth Of The Sea, Rebekah Henry
Out Of The Froth Of The Sea, Rebekah Henry
West Chester University Master’s Theses
From our earliest stories and songs, we have acknowledged water as the nourishment of life. It surrounds us in our oceans and atmosphere, and carries us to new adventures. This piece bookends physical descriptions of water and how we use it in our daily lives with the spiritual: water’s role in our myths and religions as a reflection of our humanity, our relationship to the divine, and our salvation. The libretto draws on a wide variety of sources, ranging from the ancient to the modern and crossing boundaries of religion and culture. Similarly, the music is inspired by a diverse …
Drastic Criticism, Gnostic Criticism, And Brahms's Fourth Symphony, Sean Wood
Drastic Criticism, Gnostic Criticism, And Brahms's Fourth Symphony, Sean Wood
West Chester University Master’s Theses
In her 2004 Critical Inquiry article “Music: Drastic or Gnostic?,” Carolyn Abbate argues that much writing about music avoids music’s “exceptional phenomenal presence,” its “drastic” effects (a term borrowed from philosopher Vladimir Jankélévitch). Such writing, she argues is “gnostic”; that is, interested in uncovering social, cultural, or philosophical truths beneath that “exceptional phenomenal presence.” Gnostic criticism is where music can become prey to nefarious philosophies; shorn from the context of performance, it can become whatever the critic wishes it to be. This indictment trains much of its focus on the work of Theodor W. Adorno, whom she regards as one …

Sovereign, Christian Johnson
Sovereign, Christian Johnson
West Chester University Master’s Theses
Sovereign is a musical retelling of the Revelation of Jesus Christ, the last book of the Bible. This Scripture describes the end times, the temptations of Satan and his followers, the destruction of the world, the pouring out of God’s wrath on unbelievers and the presence of God’s grace within this wrath, the second coming of Jesus Christ, the battle of Armageddon, and the eternal kingdom to come. The musical work is directly inspired by the text and attempts to represent the events that are foretold.
The first movement, “Whoever Has Ears,” depicts chapters 1-4 of the book of Revelation, …

Claude V. Palisca (1921–2001) was a prominent American musicologist and music educator. He authored books and articles about Renaissance and Baroque music theory and developments in musicology, but is most widely known as the founder and first editor of the Norton Anthology of Western Music (NAWM) and coauthor of A History of Western Music, the two music history textbooks that are still in use in classrooms worldwide.
