Synchrony: Music Of Sarah Weaver And Collaborations (2006–2019), Sarah Weaver
Synchrony: Music Of Sarah Weaver And Collaborations (2006–2019), Sarah Weaver
Journal of Network Music and Arts
Synchrony is a prominent lens in works by composer Sarah Weaver and collaborations from the years 2006 to 2019 for solo, chamber, large ensemble, and network music pieces. “Synchrony,” defined as perceptual alignment of distributed time and space components, has a practical motivation for transcending both latency and technology mediation in the network music medium. Synchrony also functions as a deep realm of artistic expression for both network and localized music. This essay outlines the technological context of performances, artistic strategies for synchrony, examples from the pieces, and new directions for the work going forward.

Low-Latency Networked Music Collaborations: Does “Good Enough” Do Enough Good?, Gareth Dylan Smith, Zack Moir, Paul Ferguson, Gill Davies
Journal of Network Music and Arts
LoLa is a cutting-edge technology that enables low latency, real-time collaborations across vast distances using high-bandwidth, low-jitter networks. It has the capacity to transform how music is made and experienced. It has been utilized on a relatively small scale to date, primarily for teaching and performances associated with music colleges and concert halls. In this article we discuss various ways in which LoLa technology is “good enough” by describing examples of recent networked music performances “anchored” at Edinburgh Napier University, Scotland. We discuss the ways in which processes and outcomes were “good enough” for the sound engineer, participating musicians, and …
A Quantum-Classical Network For Beat-Making Performance, Scott Oshiro, Omar Costa Hamido
A Quantum-Classical Network For Beat-Making Performance, Scott Oshiro, Omar Costa Hamido
Journal of Network Music and Arts
In recent years, quantum computing has emerged as the next frontier in computational and information technologies. Even though it has found potential applications in solving complex problems in fields such as chemistry, machine learning, and cryptography, among other fields, there has been little research conducted on its applications for music and acoustic technologies. This paper will discuss the use of a quantum internet protocol in the context of networked music performance in which quantum computing could play a role in processing musical data via a cloud-based music software application. We also propose an example model for a beat-making performance network …
Purpose And Well-Being Through Administering Network Performances, Andrew Mcmillan, Fabio Morreale
Purpose And Well-Being Through Administering Network Performances, Andrew Mcmillan, Fabio Morreale
Journal of Network Music and Arts
Due to the COVID-19 crisis, music communities who found themselves in social and physical isolation have been trying to find alternative solutions to keep some form of connection. Network performance is one of these solutions, one that is specifically aimed at enhancing communities’ connectivity beyond one’s intimate surroundings. In order for network performances to properly work, there are numerous roles that need to be filled; these include performers, administrators, technicians, and event organizers. This paper presents new discussions aimed at understanding these evolving roles and the way in which they are intertwined. These discussions are based on the autobiographical reflections …
Networked Music Performance In Virtual Reality: Current Perspectives, Ben Loveridge
Networked Music Performance In Virtual Reality: Current Perspectives, Ben Loveridge
Journal of Network Music and Arts
The ability for musicians to interact face-to-face has been highly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Physical distancing and travel restrictions have forced teaching, rehearsals, and performances to be moved online. The use of videoconference platforms designed for conversation has also meant accepting their limitations when used in musical contexts. For example, in networked music performance (NMP), low-latency audio is usually transmitted alongside a separate video image. Since videoconference systems usually have a higher degree of in-built delay, the result is that performers often ignore the video image of each other in order to maintain a steady rhythm. If musicians usually …

Expressive Arts, Social Circus, And Community Music Therapy: A Literature Review, Tyler Sabourin
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
This capstone thesis explores the broad ways in which the expressive arts therapies can be applied with a community focus. Particular attention is paid to the community-centered goals and the role of performance in social circus as they relate to the current practice and goals of community music therapy. Through an exploration of social circus models, the connection between social circus and therapeutic theater is described, and emerging literature that links the two is analyzed. The field of community music therapy is explored, as are its theoretical similarities to social circus. The current limitations on research of mixed-modality practices which …

Audience Influence On The Composition, Revision And Interpolation Of Traditional Irish Ballad Narrative, Seán Ó Cadhla
Audience Influence On The Composition, Revision And Interpolation Of Traditional Irish Ballad Narrative, Seán Ó Cadhla
Doctoral
The following thesis critically examines the essential thematic malleability of traditional Irish song narrative, with particular focus on the penetrative influence of the audience on both composer and performer alike. Such narrative fluidity is specifically examined within the context of works narrating attested historical events, output which could be reasonably assumed to adhere to factual and chronological consistency. The research concludes that the audience continuously exerts a powerful cultural influence on the performance space, and further demonstrates the considerable extremes that both composers and singers will routinely embrace in order to satisfy the constantly shifting demands of their audiences, even …
Viola Fragments: Contextualizing And Interpreting Selections From György Kurtág's Signs, Games And Messages, Mounir Nessim
Viola Fragments: Contextualizing And Interpreting Selections From György Kurtág's Signs, Games And Messages, Mounir Nessim
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The viola came to prominence as a solo instrument relatively late compared to the violin and cello. As a result, the standard repertoire is more recent, consisting largely of twentieth century works. The standard repertoire continues to expand as new works are written and embraced by performers. One such work is the Hungarian composer György Kurtág's open ended collection of pieces for solo viola Signs, Games and Messages (1987-). Kurtág, born in 1926, is one of the most important composers of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. His music is characterized by its brevity, fragmentation, ambiguity, and intertextuality. The painstaking scrutiny …
Catering Group Piano Curriculum For The Music Educators Of The Next Generation, Chee Hyeon Choi Dr.
Catering Group Piano Curriculum For The Music Educators Of The Next Generation, Chee Hyeon Choi Dr.
Journal of the Association for Technology in Music Instruction
Advances in consumer technology have drastically changed the ways students access and appreciate music. As a result, teaching materials in group piano curriculum have become quickly outdated. Students no longer recognize folk tunes that have been sung or used for harmonization exercises; they prefer to listen and play music on their playlist stored in their mobile devices. Although pedagogical principles and objectives should persist over time, teaching methodologies and materials should continuously be updated to increase students’ engagement in learning. The newer generation of students favor classes that are more practical, satisfy their personal interests, and meet their degree program …
Dynamic Uses Of Spectrographic Analysis In Choral Rehearsals And The Voice Studio, Mark Mcquade
Dynamic Uses Of Spectrographic Analysis In Choral Rehearsals And The Voice Studio, Mark Mcquade
Journal of the Association for Technology in Music Instruction
Spectrographic analysis is a powerful tool that allows students to see a visual representation of the acoustic properties of their instruments. For today’s technologically savvy students it brings an exciting new element to music making that will allow them to grow musically, artistically, and technically even faster. With a computer, microphone, and screen (or even just a smart phone) teachers can open their students’ eyes to see what their ears have always been hearing. By turning an aural/oral art into a visual experience, students will gain a deeper understanding of their instruments and how they can use those instruments efficiently …

Social Power Of Jazz Festivals, Olga Bekenshtein
Social Power Of Jazz Festivals, Olga Bekenshtein
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Jazz festivals occur in all parts of the world, small cities and metropolises, urban and rural landscapes, stadiums, churches, streets, and abandoned factories. Being a part of the entertainment industry, they have the potential to impact social change. Jazz festivals help us reconsider notions of identity and community, and their communal experience has the potential to undermine dominant social norms. The industry of jazz festivals is based on Black music and has a history of positive and negative social outcomes. Evaluating festivals through the symbolic meaning of music provides an optic into how festivals marginalize and exploit African American cultural …

Four Works For Trumpet: Compositions By: Torelli, La Barbera, Ewazen And Hovhaness, Charles Meggitt
Recital Papers
The works included in this recital paper are presented as a program of music that delves into the expressive range of the trumpet as a solo instrument, and its uses by composers of differing time periods and artistic directions. The composers of this program were deliberately selected for their extreme sensibilities and knowledge of the uses of trumpet as a solo instrument. In this paper works by Giuseppe Torelli, John La Barbera, Eric Ewazen and Alan Hovhaness are explored to benefit performers and audience members through an exposure to both standard and unique selections of the repertoire.
A Study Of Select World-Federated International Piano Competitions: Influential Factors In Performer Repertoire Choices, Yuan-Hung Lin
A Study Of Select World-Federated International Piano Competitions: Influential Factors In Performer Repertoire Choices, Yuan-Hung Lin
Dissertations
In the last ninety years, international music competitions have increased steadily. According to the 2011 Yearbook of the World Federation of International Music Competitions (WFIMC)—founded in 1957—there were only thirteen world-federated international competitions at its founding, with at least nine competitions featuring or including piano. One of the founding competitions, the Chopin competition held in Warsaw, dates back to 1927. The number of world-federated international competitions has since increased to 122 in 2019, with a total of fifty-nine piano competitions (thirty-two dedicated solely to piano). More and more, pianists strive to participate in several competitions in order to win a …
A Narrative Case Study Of Transfer Students In Instrumental Music Education, Ashley Glenn
A Narrative Case Study Of Transfer Students In Instrumental Music Education, Ashley Glenn
Dissertations
Transfer students in music fields face challenges that are different from other fields of study. Research has shown that transfer students in music are expected to acclimate and operate as upperclassmen with minimal onboarding while also potentially having to retake courses they received credit for at the community college level. This study examines the experiences of five transfer students in music education through the lens of Schlossberg’s transition theory and Dewey’s model of transaction. Building on existing transfer student research, it asks: what do transfer students experience in terms of acceptance and self-integration, and how do these experiences affect transfer …

Diversity In Worship: The Integration Of Historic Works Into The Contemporary Worship Service, As Illustrated By The Oboe, Bethany Eileen Butler
Diversity In Worship: The Integration Of Historic Works Into The Contemporary Worship Service, As Illustrated By The Oboe, Bethany Eileen Butler
Masters Theses
Since the times of the New Testament, the church has inevitably found itself entangled in “Worship Wars,”1 sparked by the introduction of new styles of music. Today, contemporary churches often only present one style of music while neglecting the rich history of sacred, instrumental music. When a single style of worship is exclusively offered in worship, the service can neglect to be multigenerational and multicultural, only relatable to some of the congregation, rather than the whole Body. If contemporary churches took a blended worship approach and integrated historic works into their worship services, the church would see growth in outreach, …

An Analysis Of Dairy And Its Effects On Vocal Production, Micah Sessions
Undergraduate Research Journal
Dairy is anecdotally known to create issues caused by increased mucus in the vocal performance profession. This article explores the scientific explanations behind the debate about whether or not that is true. It also uses scientific backing to recommend certain foods to avoid, if worried about that effect. It concludes with suggesting dietary choices to help alleviate the inhibition of the voice caused by the effect dairy may have on mucus.

The Value Of Assessment For The Inclusive General Music Classroom, Mary Elizabeth Quigley
Masters Theses
This project contains an analysis of the current inclusion and assessment practices of the middle school (7th and 8th grade) general music classroom. There are many studies concerning inclusion of students with special needs and the importance of assessments in teaching music. However, there are very few studies that connect assessment techniques with inclusion, demonstrating that music teachers are teaching to each student’s ability. This study used the case study methodology in the qualitative approach with teacher interviews, surveys, and several classroom observations to analyze the data. The data was coded, and names of people and the school district were …
Talk This Way: A Look At The Historical Conversation Between Hip-Hop And Christianity, Joshua Swanson
Talk This Way: A Look At The Historical Conversation Between Hip-Hop And Christianity, Joshua Swanson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Christianity and Hip-Hop culture are often said to be at odds with one another. One is said to promote a lifestyle of righteousness and love, while the other is said to promote drugs, violence, and pride. As a result, the public has portrayed these two institutions as conflicting with no willingness to resolve their perceived differences. This paper will argue that there has always been a healthy conversation between Hip-Hop and Christianity since Hip-Hop’s inception. Using sources like Hip-Hop lyrics, theologians, historians, autobiographies, sermons, and articles that range from Ma$e to Tipper Gore, this paper will look at the conversation …

The Effect Of Vocal Warm-Up On Voice Quality Of Untrained Female Singers In Malaysia, Wei Shean Ter
Student Works (2020-2029)
Professional singers and singing teachers regard vocal warm-up as vital. However, very few studies have evaluated this effect quantitatively. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the vocal warm-up on the singing voice quality through acoustic parameters of Jitter, Shimmer and harmonics-to-noise ratio (HNR) and to assess whether scientific evidence supports the warm-up procedure, whether an untrained singer can benefit from singing vocal warm-up exercises in a similar way as a trained singer and whether the vocal warm-up should be encouraged or bypassed. 40 untrained female singers were recorded twice while uttering the vowel /a/, /o/ and /i/ in …
