Normally our annual Vespers Concert is part of the Andrews University Music Festival, but due to the pandemic we were unable to welcome our high school students to campus this year. But we will still continue our vespers tradition with a variety of wonderful sacred music, including some lively early American hymn tunes (Rhapsody on American Shaped Note Melodies by James Curnow and A Sacred Suite by Brant Karrick), sturdy hymns of old (God of Our Fathers by Thomas Knox and Be Thou My Vision by Travis Cross), and newer songs of praise (Joy Revisited by Frank Ticheli and Prologue …

"The Rest Is Lagniappe": The Female Secondary Band Director Experience In Louisiana, Margaret M. Webb

The purpose of this case study is to examine the experience of female secondary band directors in southeastern Louisiana. Six female band directors in Louisiana were interviewed using video-conferencing. Of the six, four were middle school directors and two were high school directors. The semi-structured interviews took place in three phases: 1) musical influences and experiences from birth through college, 2) early teaching experience, and 3) current teaching experience. Data analysis included four phases of coding; open, axial, closed, and selective. Coding uncovered multiple themes in the findings. Sync Variations is a collaboration between the composer and sound artist Elad Shniderman, the physicist Moti Fridman, and his colleagues Nir Davidson and Shir Shahal. An article on the scientific research aspect of this project was published in Nature Communications². This article focuses on the musical performance and score.

The project is the product of a unique interaction between musicians through a custom-programmed network system. This system simulates the network environment of the internet in many ways. However, the piece has not yet been performed over the internet, which naturally will be the next step in this project. …

On Composing 5,000 Miles, Joe Sferra

This article is my account of composing my first piece for telematic performance, a quartet called 5,000 Miles. The piece was commissioned by the ACCAD Sonic Arts Ensemble, directed by Marc Ainger, Ann Stimson, and Federico Cámara Halac. I performed the piece with the ensemble on two performances in November 2020: a performance for the NowNetArts Conference, and a second performance titled “Into the Multiverse” for the Wexner Center for the Arts at Ohio State University. I outline how I approached writing a specifically telematic piece, then present an analysis.

We present a report of the experience of our remote musical collaboration during the Covid-19 pandemic regarding live electronic, audiovisual compositions, and telematic performance in the context of the project Sound Notebooks. We discuss the problems found and the solutions adopted in the performances, as well as the hypotheses of musical research raised by the remote environment. We argue that the variety of expressive modes, sonic modalities, and video possibilities in the Sound Notebooks repertoire we presented contributes to the construction of an aesthetics for remote performance. Electo Electro 2020, An Interactive Voting Booth Installation, Mike Richison

Electo Electro 2020 was a project that was created specifically for the 2020 presidential election cycle. This paper is a follow-up to an article published in 2019 for the Journal of Network Music and Arts, “Voting Booths and Interactive Art Installations: The Diebold AccuVote-TS in Context.” In that paper, I discussed the original concept and goals for the project, several examples of work from other artists, and an earlier project from 2016 that served as the impetus for Electo Electro. Isometric Exercises And Stretching Warm-Up Program For University String Musicians: An Intervention Study, Emma Porter

In this study, the purpose of this investigation was to find the effects of reducing pain through combining isometric and stretching warm-up exercises for stringed instrument musicians. In Lee’s et al. (2013) study, it showed that about 75 % of musicians have work-related musculoskeletal disorders and experience pain because of playing. In this study, they also saw that string players have the highest prevalence of both musculoskeletal disorders and pain while playing (Lee et al., 2013). In Nawrocka’s et al. (2014) journal article, the study showed the correlation of more pain in musicians that did not meet the recommended criteria …

Phrase Extension In Haydn’S String Quartet Minuets: A Preliminary Corpus Study, William O'Hara

Sunderman Conservatory of Music Faculty Publications

This study examines a small but well-defined corpus: Franz Joseph Haydn’s string quartet minuets and trios (n=76 paired dances, or 152 individual minuets), composed between 1764 and 1803. Seeking to identify the metrical differences between a minuet intended for dancing and one intended for the salon or the concert stage, this study parses Haydn’s 8- and 10-measure minuet and trio sections (using the models of “tight-knit” theme types proposed by Caplin 1998), identifies patterns in Haydn’s phrase extensions, and discusses challenges and opportunities for further corpus-informed studies of phrase rhythm and hypermeter.

Guitar orchestras were at their height of popularity in the late 1800's and early 1900's in Europe, South America and North America, and played an important role in the promotion of the suffragette movement. Although the popularity of this ensemble type declined after WW1, they have seen a strong resurgence within the past 20 years. Many influential women in the guitar world, including Madame Sydney Pratton and Vahdah Olcott-Bickford, played crucial roles in the development of guitar orchestras. That continues to this day with composers such as the internationally renown Dutch composer Annette Kruisbrink writing works for this ensemble format …
