Concerts and Event Programs 2020-2021

Andrews University Department of Music presents its Easter Choral concert, entitled "From Darkness to Light, In Thee is Gladness!". Ensembles include Andrews University Singers, Pioneer Men's Chorus, and Canta Bella. Conducted by Stephen Zork, featuring graduate conductor Kristii Rasmussen and undergraduate conductors Emily Jurek, Vivian Raimundo, and Beta Siriwattanakamol. Performing works by Stroope, Arnesen, Bach, Stopford, and others.

Alfred Aman Jr. (1991-2002)

Now the holder of a named professorship at the Maurer School of Law at Indiana University Bloomington, University of Rochester Life Trustee Fred Aman '67 retired last year after a decorated career as an attorney, legal scholar, and academic administrator. Along the way, he's been an accomplished jazz drummer.

“Sound in Color” is an interactive audio-visual experience designed to explore the relationship between sound, color, and emotions. Taking place on the Massey Concert Hall stage, the project is inspired by synesthesia and incorporates research on color psychology. Participants are invited to select an emotion and color. As the user hums into a microphone, they hear their emotions expressed through sound in their headphones and watch as the lights on stage respond to their vocal cues.

Many schools at the Secondary Level focus their music program around performing ensembles, such as band, orchestra, or choir. These ensembles are based in traditional Western music practices and exclude a large portion of the school’s student population. The purpose of this literature review was to share the benefits of providing non-performance music classes, as well as highlight some of the likely roadblocks that may be encountered when trying to implement these classes into the school curriculum. Music And The Brain: A Review Of Neuroscientific And Clinical Applications, Jacqueline Larivee

My research examines the relationship between neuroscience and music, exploring its clinical applications. I extensively review the specific neuroanatomic structures implicated in musical perception. Knowing the function of each brain structure as it relates to musical perception provides insight as to how music is able to elicit certain physical and emotional responses. As music interacts with the human brain, it is also able to provide social, cognitive, and emotional benefits. Given these benefits, my research argues that music is an effective therapeutic intervention for vulnerable populations. I examine the impact of music therapy on preterm infants, hearing impaired individuals, intellectually …

A Concept OST was developed during my final year at the University of Maine at Farmington. This collection of original music represents the skills I have learned while studying composition and music theory.

Some of the inspirations that helped me shape the sonic world I created include Nobuo Uematsu (Final Fantasy), Yoko Shimomura (Kingdom Hearts), Junichi Masuda (Pokemon) Jake Kaufman (Shovel Knight), and Toby Fox (Undertale). These composers are known for their narrative-driven compositional work for video games that fit into the Role-Playing-Game playstyle. My enhancement for MUSC 332, History of Music II, is a look at the life of the German-American composer Bernhard Heiden and how his Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Piano is an outstanding representation of his compositional style. Throughout this process I have studied, learned, and performed the second movement of Heiden's sonata on the alto saxophone. I worked on this piece in my private saxophone lessons with my professor, Dr. Kinzer, so I could accurately portray the character of Heiden's music. The Troubles were a period of crisis and violence in Ireland in the latter half of the twentieth century. Loyalists, Unionists, Republicans, and Nationalists brutally fought against each other over the issue of whether or not Northern Ireland should remain in the United Kingdom or join the Republic of Ireland to form one united country. The conflict also resulted in ethnic and religious tensions for many Protestants and Catholics who were compelled to choose sides over this issue, owing to their ties to the deep-rooted history of animosity between the two Christian populations. The guiding research questions were (a) Why and how has one GIML PDLC-experienced EGMT studied, interpreted, and implemented music learning theory in her music teaching practice? The occurrence of burnout amongst healthcare workers and other helping professionals is a persistent problem, despite efforts made by individuals and organizations to prevent countertransference and the accompanying negative personal experiences. Vicarious resilience is a relatively new concept, highlighting the benefits one may experience from professional encounters with those who have survived trauma or other difficult life circumstances. Previous research detailing the personal effects of trauma work is predominantly negative, warning of vicarious trauma, secondary traumatic stress and compassion fatigue. This scoping review examines emerging evidence on vicarious resilience, featuring a more hopeful outlook for helping professionals. Recommendations from the …

Since hip-hop’s emergence in New York during the early 1970s, there has been an increasing amount of Japanese popular cultural references in Black American rap and hip-hop. This increase is made possible through globalization and innovations in communication technology. Most previous research on the trend has focused primarily on the impact hip-hop has had on Japanese culture, and how Afro-Asian collaborations have shaped music produced in the East and West.
