The purpose of this study was to determine what technologies are used in fourth- and fifth-grade instrumental music and to examine factors that influence the attitudes of teachers, students, and their parents toward the use of those technologies. Two researcher-designed questionnaires, the Technology in Music Usage Questionnaire (TMUQ) and the Technology in Music Attitude Questionnaire (TMAQ), were administered to a sample of teachers, students, and parents associated with first-year elementary instrumental music in a large, American Midwest urban school district. Results indicated that while most teachers use technology in class (87.0%), it is generally only used up to a third …

People with some types of post-stroke aphasia often experience depression as well as loss of speech. Music therapy has unique properties that allow it to be used therapeutically to treat both speech impairment and depression yet it is rarely used to treat both disorders. This literature review seeks to examine the underlying causes for this discrepancy, review methods used by practitioners to treat both disorders and suggest future directions for additional research and implications for the treatment of patients with aphasia who have both language impairment and depression.

The process of hospitalization and the environment of a typical psychiatric hospital is often counter-therapeutic. To challenge this problem, clinicians may introduce the concept of psychological containment. To elaborate, being hospitalized anywhere can be disorienting, frightening and even traumatic. This problem is only further exacerbated in psychiatric hospitals where patients may be disorganized, manic, or struggling with psychosis. Furthermore, psychological containment is essentially the ability for psychiatric patients to prevent their intense emotions from effecting others negatively, and to act with resiliency when other patients are unable to contain their own disruptive behaviors. Through the development and implementation of a method, intermodal exchange between visual art and music was integrated into both the school’s art program and its group counseling offerings. In this paper, we will look at the topic of instrument sampling for virtual instrument libraries. This paper will look at the history of recording devices, samplers, first technologies for playing orchestral sounds, and the process for making my own library. This paper looks at the techniques and processes for sampling a grand piano in detail. Details including pitch, dynamics, microphone placements, round robins, releases, and pedals. For my own sample library, I recorded and programmed Foley sounds that can be used for film compositions.

Too often piano lessons consist of students sitting still at the piano. This leads to students either zoning out or getting wiggly and disruptive. This is a book of Dalcroze-inspired activities to help elementary age students internalize musical concepts, express themselves better musically, and be more engaged during piano lessons. In this resource, each unit will have a game, a listening activity, a story to act out, exercises to bring the concept to the piano, and a final piece to tie it all together.

The Heart Sutra is one of the most recited texts in the Mahayana Budddhist tradition. Traditionally, it is chanted rhythmically on a single pitch with a wooden drum. This setting of the Heart Sutra instead expresses the text through harmony and text painting.

The piece opens with a Hindustani-style invocation, referencing Buddhism’s Indian roots. Following that, a solo alto recounts a story of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara before all voices deliver his Insight, addressed to his disciple Shariputra.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of daily vocal exploration exercises on pitch matching skills of first and fourth grade students. Students were assessed on their ability to match pitch in echo patterns and short songs at the beginning and end of the study. The goal was to use vocal exploration to help students develop their head voice and potentially develop more accurate singing. The first grade experimental and control groups and fourth grade control group showed improvement in their echo patterns, but the fourth grade experimental group demonstrated a reduction in their echo abilities.
