Music As Complementary And Alternative Medicine (Cam) Therapy: An Exploratory Literature Review, Amy Arlene Clary

Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) is a broad term for treatment plans outside of conventional therapy or conventional medicine.1 The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) divides CAM therapies into three categories “Natural Products,” “Mind and Body,” and “Other Complementary Health Approaches.” The NCCIH places music in the category “Mind and Body.” This exploratory literature review provides a comprehensive review of the various ways music is being studied for its psychological, sociological, and physiological benefits.

Rāvaṇa, the ten-headed Rākṣasa (‘demon’) king of the epic the Rāmāyaṇa, is the most fascinating of all the antagonists in films based on Hindu mythology, so powerful that even the Sun cannot rise without his orders, and celebrated as an unparalleled musician-scholar and great devotee of the god Śiva. His passion for the vīṇā, a string instrument with divine associations, is so great that this instrument adorns his royal flag as its emblem. Concerto for Trumpet and Strings by Edward Gregson is a substantial work of the late twentieth century underperformed among trumpet players. The primary reasons for its relative neglect are its technical challenges and the demands of endurance it places on the player. A well-designed approach to the preparation of this work will benefit students and professional players wishing to prepare for a performance of the work. This project will combine the knowledge of researchers and teachers in formulating specific practice approaches for the concerto’s challenges.

Nocturnes have remained in the standard piano literature for over two hundred years. However, students may not study this genre of repertoire until the advanced level of playing, and might therefore lack the full skills or knowledge necessary for successful nocturne performance. The purpose of this study is to provide a current, comprehensive, didactic resource on Romantic-style pedagogical piano nocturne literature from early elementary to early advanced levels, to aid teachers in the education of their students.

Quantitative Data Collection On The Fundamental Components Of Saxophone Tone Production, Matthew Troy Castner

Wind instrument pedagogy has historically been limited by the inability to collect quantitative data on the relationships and impact of different elements of tone production. This study collected and analyzed data on three of the fundamental components of saxophone tone production: embouchure pressure, air velocity, and air direction. The results help build a better understanding of the inner workings of producing a characteristic saxophone sound.

Six classical alto saxophone players completed a variety of exercises to isolate and measure each of these components. The data was collected using a force-sensitive resistor and a pitot tube, each connected to an Arduino …

The Covid-19 pandemic posed an interesting challenge for performing artists: How does one continue to make art and perform while maintaining performer and audience safety? As a music student preparing for my Junior Music Composition Recital, the uncertainty surrounding the pandemic forced me to reevaluate the direction and nature of the music I was writing. This led to the composition of three new works which were specifically written to be performed while adhering to social distancing and mask requirements. Throughout the history of piano playing as an art form, various performers, teachers, and theorists have written treatises as a means of conveying their thoughts on interpretation, education, and technique. As the Romantic tradition of pianism peaked in the early- to mid-20th century, three particular treatises were written that continue to have a major impact upon pianistic thought. These were Basic Principles in Pianoforte Playing by Josef Lhevinne, Piano Technique by Karl Leimer, and The Art of Piano Playing by Heinrich Neuhaus.

Johann Nepomuk Hummel’s only oratorio, Der Durchzug durchs rote Meer, was lost to the musical world until around 2004. Hummel (1778–1837) was greatly esteemed during his life as a concert pianist and as a composer, and several of his choral works were among those highly regarded by his contemporaries. Interest in his works, along with Hummel scholarship, has increased in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

Hummel’s oratorio is for Classical orchestra plus guitar, harp, and bass drum, four to ten vocal soli, and chorus. Its thirteen numbers run about 51 minutes, recounting the biblical story of Moses and Pharaoh, the …

The goal of this investigation is to focus on the career and times of Adele aus der Ohe and piano performance in the Gilded Age United States. Carnegie Hall, founded in 1891, was one of the first major halls that witnessed and documented solo piano recital programming. Through analysis of Adele aus der Ohe’s programs intended for Carnegie Hall, it is possible to understand some of the complexities surrounding the solo recital, piano performance, and audience culture at the turn of the 20^th century.

This study investigates the representation of African American composers within the solo vocal literature genre of classical music. Literature suggests the music of African American composers is seldom taught in classical musical studies. The study explored one publicly available college recital database from each U.S. geographical region (Northeast, Midwest, South, West), which included listings of songs performed at each recital. Transcriptions and adaptations of works originally composed for other instruments are commonplace within the current marimba repertoire. Marimbists have been borrowing repertoire from other instruments and transcribing or arranging them for performance on the marimba due to the relative youth of the instrument. These adaptations began as a necessity, but they are still often programmed due to their popularity, and because many academic institutions require the performance of era-specific works or works by certain composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach, and no literature was composed for the marimba during those times.

The Imperial Trumpeters’ Guild of the 17th and 18th centuries Holy Roman Empire implemented a remarkable and effective training program for its apprentices: an expedited two-year apprenticeship structure with a seven-year journeyman period when the training was applied. Studying the structure of the apprenticeship and how the expedited system was implemented gives a new insight into an effective and efficient teaching model. This training regimen was made possible because apprentices received the necessary musical foundation and pedagogical methods through attending the Latin school. This article investigates the affordability and feasibility of conducting virtual piano lessons for the college level learner. It proposes an approach that works well and requires equipment costing approximately $300 per student. We outline the pros and cons of conducting virtual piano lessons online. The main benefit is overcoming geographical distances, whereas limitations include challenges such as the instructor being able to check issues such as fingerings or dynamics. Latency is not a major problem as long as only one person is playing at any given time, as found in past work. The process of teaching and learning online requires …
