Exploring The Regional Traditions Of Fiddling, Anna N. Eyink

Student Theses

During the 1600s, the modern violin traveled from Italy to the British Isles and North America. The instrument became a vital piece of each region's musical culture, and distinct fiddling traditions became established in Ireland, Scotland, Cape Breton, and America. This thesis explores the history of the Irish, Scottish, Cape Breton, Appalachian, and bluegrass fiddling traditions. Additionally, the performance practices of each style are discussed in depth and are related back to the traditional tunes recorded as a part of this project.

The Modern Jazz Guitarist's Approach To Standard Repertoire, Stephan T. Wieder

This paper examines Gilad Hekselman, Jonathan Kreisberg, Julian Lage, Lage Lund, Mike Moreno, and Kurt Rosenwinkel through the lens of written transcription. All six musicians are analyzed using standards such as; "Stella By Starlight", "Stablemates", "I'll Be Seeing You", "Sandu", and many more. The study of their transcriptions combined with details about their technique and musical equipment, will reveal a clearer understanding of their methods and style. The analysis of these transcriptions focuses on four main elements: phrasing, rhythmic choices, melodic choices, and overall thematic development.

Creative Practice For Classical String Players With Live Looping, Caleb Yang

In recent years, string pedagogy discussions have highlighted the greater need for creative practice as classical string players. Since the second half of the nineteenth century, string methods have shifted towards a limited scope of improvisatory techniques, parallelling the decline of improvisation in Western classical music performance practices. This thesis explores live looping as a practice tool to facilitate learning concepts and help string players develop musicianship skills including improvisation, participate in non-classical genres, and explore their creative voices. The topic of Latin American women poets and composers is not commonly taught in the standard song literature in universities as they are not considered a part of the Western classical music canon. Instead, male poets and composers of German, Italian, French, and British descent are the focus in standard song literature. Although many of these composers have undoubtedly had an impact in music history, the Western classical music canon has neglected entire ethnic and racial groups. All ideas stored in our heads are simplistic in nature, or relational to others, which allows for the production of more complex ideas. As is such, small memories supplement beautifully full, yet inherently relational concepts. Small scale ideas are useful to performers (and to audiences), as it is difficult to handle brain capacity overload; it's impossible to multi-task, let alone keep multiple ideas going at once to their fullest, especially when presented with dense new materials. Grrrls, Grrrls, Grrrls: Incorporating Feminist Theory Into Punk Rock Composition, Bryan M. Waring

This project argues that one can make rock music with anti-sexist values by incorporating feminist criticism and gendered performance into the composition of punk rock music. To test this thesis, the history of feminism and its implementation within musical discourse were examined. Using feminist music theory as a lens for observation, several songs from female artists and mix-gender bands within the punk genre were analyzed. This was done in order to find similarities in compositional practices and to explore punk rock’s symbolic representations of gender. Integrative Music Therapy: A Healing Intervention For Children With Disabilities, Francesca N. Do

Children with developmental delays have barriers to accessing early interventions to help develop their childhood milestones. An accessible intervention considered a universal language to all cultures is integrative music therapy. Music therapy paired with in-home care can create a healing environment for children to learn developmental skills, initiate play, and express their emotions with the nurse’s guidance. An integrative music therapy educational program was developed using Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring as a theoretical framework for the pediatric nurses working in a rural Midwest home health care company. Out of this deep sense of belovedness, we are called to embody God’s loving presence. “How Big Are Your Arms, O God?” urges a broader imagination of God’s compassion and a more inclusive expression of that love in this world. As both a proclamation and a reminder, this song explores our understanding of and response to “the breadth and length and height and depth…[of] the love of Christ” (Ephesians 3:18, NRSV).

Exploring Music Genres: A Study Of Optimal Differentiation By Feature, Rebecca Stetler

Honors Projects

This study explores the presence of optimal differentiation in music at the feature level by genre. Popularity prediction models are constructed and used to identify influential features in predicting popularity in each genre. These influential features are then assessed for optimal differentiation of the most popular songs from all songs in the genre.

How Rhythm Affects Prosody, Mckenzie Ward

Music interventions and how they benefit reading fluency have been researched, but there is more to be done in discovering the benefits of rhythm and prosody. This quantitative research study looked at how rhythm-based interventions affect student prosody in a second-grade classroom. Data were gathered from a music experience survey, a prosody pre-assessment, and a prosody post-assessment. The music intervention in this study involved three rhythm-based interventions called “DeeDee games.” This research analyzed and compared the growth between the prosody pre-and post-assessments and the results between students with musical backgrounds and students without musical backgrounds. Misophonia is a condition characterized by negative emotional reactions to certain everyday sounds. Musicality involves Active Musical Engagement (AE), Self-reported Perceptual Abilities (PA), Musical Training (MT), Self-reported Singing Abilities (SA), Sophisticated Emotional Engagement with Music (EM), and General musical sophistication (GM). Numerous active musicians have self-reported having misophonia, while anecdotal reports have shown that music can help treat misophonia symptoms.

Misophonia: a condition in which specific everyday sounds (e.g., chewing, breathing) trigger an atypical, negative emotional response.

ASMR: a sensory phenomenon triggered by stimuli that induce a state of relaxation, positive feelings, and tinging sensations that spread from the head to the rest of the body.

Musical frisson: typically characterized by positive affect and strong physiological reactions, such as shivering, goosebumps, and teary-eyes in response to highly pleasurable music.

BTS is a seven-membered South Korean boyband with a fandom named "ARMY." Music is generally associated with increased mental health, but not all types of music genres have been studied yet. With the current rise of Korean popular music (K-pop), it is important to understand what makes this genre popular and why fans claim it has improved their mental health. As BTS is currently the most popular K-pop group globally, they provide a unique look at how their music can help fans with depression and anxiety.

The “Sing Me a Story” project is an initiative with the purpose to explore the therapeutic effect of songwriting on young adults with disabilities. With sessions taking place over the course of several weeks, the project is inspired by my own experience and incorporates research on the ever-growing field of music therapy. Participants are invited to join me for co-writing sessions where they will help write a song that expresses their original ideas and emotions.
