A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Study Of American And British Military Bandmasters’ Experiences And The Influence On The Development Of The American Public School Band Movement, Michael L. Burrage
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This study investigates the history of British and American Military Bandmasters’ lived experiences through a Phenomenological Hermeneutic Analysis construct to the development of the Public-School Band movement. This thesis aims to provide insight through transcribed interviews, historical documentation, and pre-recorded transcriptions of the thoughts and practical influences of developing the effectiveness of band teacher preparation in American public school band programs. A better understanding of these advances warrants a comprehensive overview of military band history and a sense of how the curriculum process, formation, and growth in British and American Military Bands influenced approaches and philosophical thought through experiences of …

Student And Parent/Guardian Perceptions Of The Effects Of Extra-Curricular Drumming Ensemble Participation On Social-Emotional Learning In A Title I Elementary School, Jennifer Nicole Gray

The purpose of this phenomenological study was to examine the perceptions of students and parents/guardians regarding the effects on social-emotional learning of extra-curricular drumming ensemble participation while attending a Title I school in North Texas. The aim was to understand how participants and their parents/guardians perceived any changes to social and emotional development as a result of participating in a drumming ensemble beyond the traditional school day. The study was conducted at a Title I elementary school campus encompassing grades kindergarten through fifth in a suburban region of North Texas and concentrated on the fifth-grade students enrolled at that campus. …

The Scholarship Of Rock Music: Knowledge Mapping Through Bibliography, Monica Berger
Publications and Research
Scholarship on rock and popular music has grown dramatically in volume and methodological variety and complexity including extensive use of interdisciplinary approaches. There currently is no comprehensive resource for scholars and educators to explore monographic scholarly literature on rock. I will showcase a new annotated bibliography, with a focus on disciplinarity and methodology, which provides a lens into how this scholarly discourse has evolved. This bibliography also makes visible broader trends regarding research topics in rock and popular music. This project will be a resource to academics and other authors, faculty designing and updating curricula, and librarians interested in building …

Music surrounds us. It is a significant part of our daily lives. People listen to music in a variety of settings and for multiple reasons. Students often listen to music while studying, in hopes of increasing productivity. Others listen to music as a way to relax before an exam. Yet...is there proof that music is beneficial for academic performance? Research shows that music and academics is a good mashup. Study after study reveals that music has several benefits for students. It reduces anxiety, improves focus and concentration, and enhances cognition. The first book dedicated to the life and work of composer Maryanne Amacher (1938- 2009), Wild Sound: Maryanne Amacher and the Tenses of Audible Life begins in medias res. Author Amy Cimini introduces us to Amacher by peering into one of her brainstorming sessions, depicting an imaginative scene set in the 1990s at Mills College. Cimini describes Amacher seated at her desk, passionately inscribing a “big quote” (announced in “heavy black Sharpie,” Cimini notes) from feminist scholar Donna Haraway’s Simians, Cyborgs and Women (1991): “I want a feminist writing….” Then, as Amacher ponders the quote’s implications for her own creative …
