Graduate Recital In Voice, Joy Harell
Graduate Recital In Voice, Joy Harell
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
In 1753, Christian Gottfried Krause published a lied collection entitled Oden mit Melodien that laid the groundwork for a new setting of words for voice and piano. Nineteenth-century German lieder dominated influential song output and centralized the art form in Western Europe. Twentieth-century art song brings an expansion of influence beyond the German lieder tradition. This abstract introduces twentieth-century composers whose works have been selected for recital performance by Joy Harrell on July 29, 2000. The works include British composer Gustav Holst's Four Songs for Voice and Violin, opus 35, Spanish Composer Federico Mompou's Cinq Melodies, American composer Valerie Caper's …

The Development Of Duke Ellington's Compositional Style: A Comparative Analysis Of Three Selected Works, Eric S. Strother
The Development Of Duke Ellington's Compositional Style: A Comparative Analysis Of Three Selected Works, Eric S. Strother
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
Edward Kennedy Duke Ellingtons compositions are significant to the study of jazz and American music in general. This study examines his compositional style through a comparative analysis of three works from each of his main stylistic periods. The analyses focus on form, instrumentation, texture and harmony, melody, tonality, and rhythm. Each piece is examined on its own and their significant features are compared.
Review Of William Blake, Antoni Pizà
Review Of William Blake, Antoni Pizà
Publications and Research
Although William Blake is the quintessential multidisciplinary artist – his achievements in literature and the visual arts are for the most part uncontested – as far as we know, he was never particularly interested in music. Indeed, neither his poetry nor his pictures describe or depict music directly. Yet, in the last 200 years or so, his work has made an astounding mark on composers and music. One sees Blake's influence primarily in the numberless musical settings of his poems, but also in more general, indefinite, and ineffable way – a very Blake-ian one, I am tempted to say. I …

Deceptive Pivot Points In J.S. Bach’S Orgelbüchlein, Quentin Faulkner
Deceptive Pivot Points In J.S. Bach’S Orgelbüchlein, Quentin Faulkner
Glenn Korff School of Music: Faculty Publications
This brief essay is about “hitting the right notes.” Among the many technical difficulties players encounter in performing Bach’s organ music, some of the most treacherous are those passages that are very similar (sometimes almost identical) to each other. They may differ by only one note or one accidental, but that difference sends the music in an entirely new direction.
Stride! Fats, Jimmy, Lion, Lamb, And All The Other Ticklers By John L. Fell And Terkild Vinding, Giant Strides: The Legacy Of Dick Wellstood By Edward Meyer (Book Reviews), Gene H. Anderson
Music Faculty Publications
As their titles suggest, these books focus on stride pianists rather than on the style itself. Well researched and written by experienced jazz enthusiasts, the books approach their subject from opposite points of view. Stride! provides a brief survey of the idiom followed by biographical sketches of players identified or associated with stride; Giant Strides recounts the life of a player who concluded the stride legacy.
