What Are Some Of The Problems Faced By Small-Handed Pianists?, Lora Deahl, Brenda Wristen
What Are Some Of The Problems Faced By Small-Handed Pianists?, Lora Deahl, Brenda Wristen
Glenn Korff School of Music: Faculty Publications
Small handedness is a complex problem that cannot be solved in the space of a few paragraphs. Moreover, the severity of this problem has increased over time. Since the invention of the piano circa 1700, the keys have increased not only in width but also in length. The height of the ebonies over the whites and the depth of the keystroke have also increased, along with the heaviness of the action. Because these developments present formidable challenges for small-handed players, there is a need for heightened awareness concerning their specialized technical problems.

Building And Sustaining Connectedness To One’S Musical Creativity And Spirit, Suzanne M. Clark
Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection
While journeying through the Critical and Creative Thinking Program I became more deeply aware of the choices and circumstances that colored my engagement in the fields of musical performance and music education. Through the modeling of and participation in reflective practice, I began to see my experiences from new and varied perspectives. In using self-evaluation, I gained a clearer understanding of my own reflective processes and began to apply this knowledge to exploring my musical engagement and creativity. It was through a self-reflective exploration of my own creative process that I discovered a number of experiences that had steered my …

The History Of The Gospel Quartet Movement In Louisiana, Joanne Lafaye Walker
Electronic Dissertations and Theses
~The full history of the Gospel Quartet movement in Louisiana is so vast and complex that even now much remains untold. The various stages of cultural evolution that constitute this musical tradition serve as a repository for all the components which have defined and governed the existence of quartets and their role in black expression." Although the preceding is a quote from author Joyce Jackson's book The Changing Nature of Gospel Music: A Southern Case Study, it has significance when studying the aspect of the Gospel Quartet Movement in Louisiana. In the following discussion, the writer will examine the ways …

Congregational Singing: An Attitudinal Survey Of Two Southern Protestant Churches., Randall G. Bennett Jr.
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
When public schools began teaching music in the 19th century, the church took a secondary role in the education of the church parishioner. The purpose of this study was to examine congregational attitudes about singing before and after an experimental treatment. Two different Churches participated in "hymn of the month" programs, but different approaches were used at each church. The congregation of Erwin Presbyterian Church learned a new hymn through repetition, while the congregation of First Baptist Church learned a new hymn through congregational practice. Surveys using a Likert-type scale were administered at each church prior to and at the …
