What Adorno Makes Possible For Music Analysis, Kofi Agawu
What Adorno Makes Possible For Music Analysis, Kofi Agawu
Publications and Research
Conceived as a commentary on four responses to Adorno’s 1928 essay, “Schubert,” by Esteban Buch, Jonathan Dunsby, Scott Burnham, and Beate Perrey, this article explores some of the implications of Adorno’s essay as they center on notions of hybridity, the interstitial and especially the provisional. It urges a critical strategy that is self-critical, that seeks to name without naming, and that draws on rigorous formal analysis without presenting its outcomes as ends but as means toward various narrative ends.

Intersection: For Orchestra, William Jones
Intersection: For Orchestra, William Jones
Masters Theses
Intersection is a musical work written for orchestra. The concept for it is loosely based on the sounds and emotions that I associate with trains. The music at the beginning of the piece, and the concept in general, was inspired by the sounds made by trains slowly passing the intersection of Kalamazoo Ave., Water St., and Pitcher St. in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Though most of the piece just uses the idea of the sound of trains as general inspiration, there are also sounds that more directly represent actual sounds, like an occasional blow of the whistle, or the sound of the …

A Survey Of Music Therapy Business Owners, Julie M. Guy
Masters Theses
An invitation to participate in a survey was emailed or sent to 503 self-employed/ private practice music therapists. As this study focused on describing current music therapy business practices, only music therapy business owners were asked to participate. Responses were received from 29% (n= l47). Results indicated that the typical business owner is a Board Certified Music Therapist (MT-BC) with a bachelor's degree who has most likely owned a sole proprietorship for less than 9 years. They typically work 30-39 hours each week and maintain 10-19 hours of contracts (primarily consisting of individual sessions). Most of the respondents work in …

Improvisation: An Integral Step In Piano Pedagogy, Lauren French
Improvisation: An Integral Step In Piano Pedagogy, Lauren French
Music Honors Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to illuminate the role of improvisation as an integral aspect of the pedagogical process that leads to a greater understanding and interpretation of cultivated music. In it, I contextualize and define improvisation to distinguish it from the process of composition, and address the issues that arise from this discussion. There also will be a brief exploration of the education philosophy of Robert Pace concerning creativity and exploratory exercises, and how his ideas (and those of other pedagogues) have been incorporated into current piano method books. Finally, through an analysis for improvisatory elements in Mozart's …

Review Of Harry Christophers And The Sixteen, La Jeune France, Vicki Stroeher
Review Of Harry Christophers And The Sixteen, La Jeune France, Vicki Stroeher
Music Faculty Research
Harry Christophers and The Sixteen (which, on this disc numbers from twelve to twenty-four singers) have assembled an exciting recording of rather unusual repertoire: that of the group of composers known as La Jeune France. Although these works may not speak aesthetically to everyone, the performances certainly will. The group's tuning is impeccable and their diction clear, even when the composer deliberately obscures the text. Christophers' interpretations are neither heavyhanded nor overly controlled, even as the chorus's expression ranges from the primitive and aggressive to the quiet and mystical.
