Energy's Human Face: Immigrant Stories In Song, David K. Ripley

The University Dialogue

My proposal for the UNH Discovery Dialogue concerns a form of social energy at the roots of our American social experience. This is the energy of those individuals who came as immigrants to our country as a result of their own personal decisiveness.

Benny Goodman : From “King Of Swing” To Third Stream, Jae Ellis Bull Jan 2006

Benny Goodman : From “King Of Swing” To Third Stream, Jae Ellis Bull

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Clarinetist and band leader Benny Goodman was born in the Chicago slums in 1909. He first played in dance bands and eventually organized his own band, which became so popular that he was known as the "King of Swing." As a clarinetist, he also was attracted to classical music, particularly the clarinet music of Mozart, Debussy and Brahms. Gunther Schuller, describing Goodman's ability to play in both jazz and classical styles said, "In a sense, Benny was the first Third Stream musician, moving easily in and out of jazz and classical music, from the Palomar Ballroom to Carnegie Hall..." 1 …

It Can “Spoil All The Beauty”: The Duplicating Of Solo Dissonances In Seventeenth-Century Thorough-Bass Accompaniment, Roland Jackson Jan 2006

It Can “Spoil All The Beauty”: The Duplicating Of Solo Dissonances In Seventeenth-Century Thorough-Bass Accompaniment, Roland Jackson

Performance Practice Review

17th-century accompaniments avoid duplicating the dissonances present in solo parts. This is borne out in available written-out versions (composer's copies, orchestral scorings), e.g. by R. Dowland, Cesti, A. Scarlatti, and Purcell. The same is evident in unrealized accompaniments (bass lines with or without figures) if interpreted according to contemporary strictures (e.g. Rule of Octave). Following these guidelines, harmonizations are suggested for laments by Monteverdi, Cavalli, and Cesti.

Carl Maria Von Weber’S Overture To Oberon: A History Of Recorded Performance, Stephen Planas Jan 2006

Carl Maria Von Weber’S Overture To Oberon: A History Of Recorded Performance, Stephen Planas

Undergraduate Research Symposium (UGRS)

My research examines the recorded performance history of the Overture to Weber’s Oberon in light of these aesthetic goals. I have charted changes in performance practice trends, including in timing, tempo fluctuation, rhythmic accuracy and ensemble, and the use of portamento. The twenty recordings studied that I surveyed span nearly seventy-five years, and include many of the 20th century’s most prominent conductors and orchestras, including groups from Communist Russia, both pre-World War II and post-World War II continental Europe, the British Isles, and the United States.8 Though by no means comprehensive, my selections encompass a diverse sampling of surviving recordings, …

The Sounds Of Japanese Noise: First Generation Of Japanese Noise-Artists, Ana Maria Alarcon Jimenez

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

This article presents pan of my research on a type of electronic music known as Japanese noise carried out for my Honors Thesis in Music, Creating Silence through Noise: an Aesthetic Approach to the Sounds of "Japanese noise". It introduces Japanese noise, its origins in the 1970s and 1980s, its musical influences, and the early distribution of its pieces. The first generation of Japanese noise artists and their perceptions of Tokyo are then discussed. Finally, the possibility is advanced of a correlation between such perceptions of the city and the sounds of Japanese noise.

“There are six vices of composition (…): the mixing of comedy and tragedy in the same part of the work; unsuitable digressions; obscure brevity; unsuitable mixing of styles; improper mixing of subjects; and the use of endings not suitable to the type of writing.” [De Arte prosayca, metrica, et rithmica (13th century treatise), by John of Garland]

Notes From The Editor, Bruce Gleason Jan 2006

Notes From The Editor, Bruce Gleason

Research & Issues in Music Education

When I first began developing the idea for this on-line journal, I envisioned a platform that would not only serve as a venue for disseminating quality research within several different research methodologies, but one that would also provide an arena for thoughtful, well informed discourse—substantive articles based on experience through teaching, formal and informal education, and professional dialogue.

The Paradox Of Assessment: Assessment As Paradox, Doug Orzolek Jan 2006

The Paradox Of Assessment: Assessment As Paradox, Doug Orzolek

Research & Issues in Music Education

Like many in the field of education, I follow the path of the assessment paradigm with great interest. Through the efforts of “No Child Left Behind” and the many accountability systems put into place in our states and districts, assessment of student learning is on the minds of many. One would only review a listing of presentations at professional development workshops, any educational journal or the editorial pages of your local paper for support of the notion that assessment has become a part of our country’s educational landscape.

Assessment has become inseparable from formal education--and it’s probably here to stay. …

The Occupational Aspirations And Expectations Of Music Education Majors In Mexico, Karendra Devroop, Beatriz Aguilar

The purpose of this study was to investigate the occupational aspirations and expectations of students majoring in music education in Mexico. Participants (N = 83) included the entire population of music education majors enrolled at the National School of Music at the National Autonomous University of Mexico during the 2002 academic year. Questionnaires were administered by one of the researchers, with a return rate of 92%.

Richard Wallaschek's Nineteenth-Century Contributions To The Psychology Of Music, Amy B. Graziano, Julene K. Johnson Jan 2006

Richard Wallaschek's Nineteenth-Century Contributions To The Psychology Of Music, Amy B. Graziano, Julene K. Johnson

Music Faculty Articles and Research

RICHARD WALLASCHEK (1860-1917) is most widely known for his contributions to comparative musicology; however, he also made significant contributions to the field of music psychology. From 1890 to 1895, Wallaschek pursued interdisciplinary studies at the British Museum in London. During this time Wallaschek proposed theories about the perception and production of music. According to Wallaschek, the perception of music occurs through two types of mental representation: Tonvorstellung (tone representation), which referred to the perception of individual musical elements, and Musikvorstellung (music representation), which referred to the perception of the higher-order structure of music. Wallaschek emphasized Gestalt-like concepts in his discussion …

Bob Brookmeyer: Composer, Performer, Pedagogue, Mace Francis Jan 2006

Bob Brookmeyer: Composer, Performer, Pedagogue, Mace Francis

Theses : Honours

Before my California stay (1968-1978) I considered myself a player first and a writer second, although I did a lot of writing, from Ray Charles to Thad [Jones] and Mel [Lewis].1 Since 1979 I have come to view myself as a composer who also plays trombone; add conducting and teaching and that gives me 4 hats to wear. I do not have a swollen head, so they all fit nicely. (Brookmeyer, 1997, n.p.)

Although acknowledged as one of the pivotal figures in twentieth-century jazz, the career and the music of Bob Brookmeyer has received scant attention in secondary literature. This …

The Hand Horn In Performance, Elisa Balon Jan 2006

The Hand Horn In Performance, Elisa Balon

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Using a natural horn similar to those used in the late eighteenth through the late nineteenth centuries, I performed music written for instruments of this type in a Department of Music and Dance Student Recital. The hand stopping method was used and this helped me to gain insights into performance practices of the natural horn in the Classical and Romantic Periods.

John Coltrane: Jazz Improvisation, Performance, And Transcription, Garry J. Bertholf Jan 2006

John Coltrane: Jazz Improvisation, Performance, And Transcription, Garry J. Bertholf

Honors Theses

John William Coltrane (1926-1967) was a prominent African-American jazz saxophonist and prolific composer. The evolution of his mature career seems, from my perspective, to fall roughly into the following periods: (1) “Vertical” (ca.1955-59), (2) “Modal” (ca.1960-63) and (3) “Avant-garde” (ca. 1964-67). During this entire 12-year interlude, the artist was moving in several different directions.

Unfortunately, his working band was not well documented. However, a recording of this group in concert at Carnegie Hall in 1957 was discovered and issued in 2005 by Blue Note Records. The Blue Note compilation is the first and only full-length high-quality recording of the group. …

The Importance Of The Conductor As Editor And Arranger: A Practical Guide, Matthew F. Walicke Jan 2006

The Importance Of The Conductor As Editor And Arranger: A Practical Guide, Matthew F. Walicke

Masters Theses

Musicians and audiences will benefit significantly if conductors take on the role of editor and arranger. Though one might consider the process daunting, writing quality, professional arrangements is made easier if the conductor employs modern technological tools in the creation of new derivative works. By becoming editor and arranger, the conductor can tailor editions and arrangements to fit the needs of his or her ensembles for little more than the cost of paper. Further, by distributing these works, all conductors have the opportunity to enrich their ensembles with new arrangements and editions.

This thesis presents this case and outlines in …
