Redefining Multicultural Education And Its Applications In The General Music Classroom, Emily C. Hardwick Jul 2006

Redefining Multicultural Education And Its Applications In The General Music Classroom, Emily C. Hardwick

Theses and Dissertations

"Understanding music in relation to history and culture" is the ninth standard for music education developed by the National Association for Music Educators (MENC) in 1994 (Mark, 1996, p. 50). This principle is very broad and it is up to individual teachers to make sure they include history and multiculturalism in their curriculum. The term multicultural education is extensive and because many teachers do not understand what all it entails, some students do not get a comprehensive multicultural education.

In the general music class for example, teaching students a Japanese folk song is a typical multicultural lesson. I do not …

An Investigation Into The Spectral Music Idiom And Its Association With Visual Imagery, Particularly That Of Film And Video, Brett Mabury Jun 2006

An Investigation Into The Spectral Music Idiom And Its Association With Visual Imagery, Particularly That Of Film And Video, Brett Mabury

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The exploration of timbre became increasingly significant throughout the 20th century, with some composers making it the essence of their music. This artistic development occurred in conjunction with a technological advancement that together would contribute to the birth of what is now called `spectral music' . Using computers, composers have been able to discover the spectra of frequencies that exist at different strengths for various sounds. The information realised then became the spectral musician' s primary ingredients for composing some extraordinary works. Despite its innovative quality, spectral music is yet to gain widespread interest amongst ensembles, orchestras and ultimately the …

Woman To Woman: A Music Therapist's Experience Of Working With A Physically Challenged And Non-Verbal Woman, Carolyn Arnason Jun 2006

Woman To Woman: A Music Therapist's Experience Of Working With A Physically Challenged And Non-Verbal Woman, Carolyn Arnason

Music Faculty Publications

The phrase "woman to woman" implies that relationships between women have particular qualities and levels of understanding that value the female perspective (Gilbert & Scher 1999). This case study describes my experience as a female music therapist and pianist working for four years with Sarah (pseudonym), a physically challenged, intelligent woman who is non-verbal. Salient aspects of the improvisational music therapy sessions were use ofself as music therapist, building a collaborative relationship, working with subtle and non-verbal responses, interpretive flexibility and musical transparency. There were also dimensions of the therapeutic process that enlarged the musical relationship such as silence, "being …

Music At The Fair! The Trans-Mississippi And International Exposition, An Interactive Website, Grace Carey

Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances

“Music at the Fair!” gives the daily musical programs for The Trans-Mississippi and International Exposition, held in Omaha, Nebraska, June 1 through October 31, 1898.

The Trans-Mississippi and International Exposition brought an unprecedented array of local, national, and international musical acts to Omaha, NE in 1898. This served to designate Omaha, "the gateway to the west" as a musical hub, as well as to incite musical excitement in the region. Some of the more popular acts featured were the Theodore Thomas Orchestra, the U.S. Marine Band, and the Apollo Club of Chicago. Many more groups and their musical programs can …

Rock, Rhythm, And Rap, Wayne Helmly Jun 2006

Rock, Rhythm, And Rap, Wayne Helmly

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis suggests an alternative approach to teaching general music/music appreciation to students in grades 7-12 that incorporates the history of rock and roll and pop music. An approach to teaching rhythm reading skills through rap music is also suggested using Rockin ' Rhythm Raps by Cheryl Lavender (1998). Rare is the student that has not been saturated with popular culture during most of his or her lifetime. The case is made that teaching what is relevant to students, namely the history of vernacular music, can contribute significantly to the development of music appreciation. Sixteen lessons are provided. These lessons …

Bach-Busoni Chaconne: A Piano Transcription Analysis, Marina Fabrikant May 2006

Bach-Busoni Chaconne: A Piano Transcription Analysis, Marina Fabrikant

Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances

In 1893 Ferruccio Busoni transcribed, for the piano, the famous Bach Chaconne for violin solo from the Partita No.2 in D minor. Numerous transcriptions of this piece for different various instruments exist; however Busoni's transcription stands above all others. The purpose of this study was to analyze what the famous, twentieth-century pianist did when he transcribed Bach's Chaconne. What information exists on the topic comes primarily from pianists who dared to learn this exceptionally difficult, beautiful composition. Busoni's accomplishments lie in the new concept, a conceptual transcription, which has two roots: understanding how, historically, we are connected to the music, …

Music Therapy In The Treatment Of Eating Disorders, Marah E. Bobilin May 2006

Music Therapy In The Treatment Of Eating Disorders, Marah E. Bobilin

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

This study explored the nature of music therapy services to clients with eating disorders. The purpose of this study was two-fold: firstly, to establish some of the demographic parameters of the client population and treatment context, and secondly, to explore the therapy implementation and interpersonal dynamics of the music therapy relationship with clients with eating disorders. In order to accomplish this, this study used a survey design. Thirty-six music therapists that indicated that they were currently working or had worked with clients with eating disorders completed the online survey.

The Music Therapy Intern Working In End-Of-Life Care : A Study Of Personal Experience, Mary Delacy Kidwell May 2006

The Music Therapy Intern Working In End-Of-Life Care : A Study Of Personal Experience, Mary Delacy Kidwell

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

There is very little literature available on the personal experience of the music therapy intern, and not any specifically on the experience of the music therapy intern working in End-of-Life Care. Music therapy interns working with dying patients develop quite differently, as compared to those working with other populations. To provide music at the bedside of a dying patient is an extraordinary experience, one that seems to go beyond any level of preparedness. A survey examining the experiences of music therapy interns at the End-Of-Life Care was used to help participants share their experience about areas including: self-awareness, supervision, counseling …

It ran seventy-five minutes without an intermission and consisted of dialogue in English and fifteen songs in French. I portrayed Edith Piaf. I oversaw every element of the production. I was in charge of my marketing, finding a performance space, securing dates, hiring a pianist, stage manager, and run crew, finding a lighting …

The Effects Of Live And Recorded Musical Presentation On Stimulated Behaviors In Individuals With Alzheimer’S Disease, Nicole Mancini May 2006

The Effects Of Live And Recorded Musical Presentation On Stimulated Behaviors In Individuals With Alzheimer’S Disease, Nicole Mancini

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive brain disorder that affects a person’s memory and cognitive functioning ability. Millions of Americans are currently suffering from this disease and the number will continue to grow as life expectancy increases for the general population. There is currently no cure for Alzheimer’s disease and treatment options are limited. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate new ways to improve the quality of life and care provided for these individuals. Research in music therapy has generated promising results suggesting that music can be an effective intervention when caring for Alzheimer’s patients. The purpose of this study was …
