The New String Quartet : The Evolution Of The Hyperquartet, Rachael Dease Jan 2007

The New String Quartet : The Evolution Of The Hyperquartet, Rachael Dease

Theses : Honours

This article explores the phenomenon of the rejuvenation of the string quartet in contemporary musical culture through the use of electronics. I will discuss how recent works; including my own works Spiral (1999) and Seven Ballads til Dawn (2007) have adopted some features of popular music and new technology, while still maintaining the integrity and flavour of their classical heritage. I will use several different examples to show the ways in which a quartet can become a "hyperquartet" through the use of amplification, effects processors and playback.

Electronic Music Compositional Techniques In Instrumental Music: A Study Of Effect In Helmut Lachenmann's 'Pression', Lisa James Jan 2007

Electronic Music Compositional Techniques In Instrumental Music: A Study Of Effect In Helmut Lachenmann's 'Pression', Lisa James

Theses : Honours

The ability of new technologies of the early twentieth century to record, copy and manipulate music has permanently changed many of the basic conceptions of musical structure that have held true for centuries. With the development of musique concrete in France (1948) and elektronische musik in Germany (1951), traditional compositional elements of classical music such as melody, harmony and rhythm, which had survived even the drastic revolutions of the serial composers, began to take a secondary role to new structural and developmental techniques. Although there have been many technological and musical advances in the field of electronic music since these …

God's Lonely Men : Bernard Herrmann's Musical Voice For The Lonely And Tortured Men Of Cinema, Clare Nina Norelli Jan 2007

God's Lonely Men : Bernard Herrmann's Musical Voice For The Lonely And Tortured Men Of Cinema, Clare Nina Norelli

Theses : Honours

Bernard Herrmann (1911-1975) has long been regarded as one of the most important composers of film music. Emerging during a time when the majority of film scores worked primarily with the physical action onscreen or what was immediately obvious in the dramatic narrative, Herrmann's innovative compositional style instead focused on the unconscious and the psychological states at work. The following thesis is a discussion of the key elements of Herrmann's unique film score style and, via case studies of the three lonely male protagonists in the films Citizen Kane (Welles, USA, 1941), Vertigo (Hitchcock, USA, 1958) and Taxi Driver (Scorsese, …

To Cite Or Not To Cite? Confronting The Legacy Of (European) Writing On African Music, Kofi Agawu Jan 2007

To Cite Or Not To Cite? Confronting The Legacy Of (European) Writing On African Music, Kofi Agawu

Publications and Research

English Abstract:

The current citational practice in Western scholarship is ideologically loaded, being far more suited to a written economy than a primarily oral culture in which knowledge is preserved in memory and disseminated through repeated performance. The impact of orality on musical scholarship should be more closely investigated; African scholars have all too often become informants rather than theorists of their own traditions. It is therefore proposed that the routine citation of a body of scholarship developed without Africa's historically-specific intellectual needs and ambitions in mind should in fact be discouraged.

Judith Weir's King Harald's Saga: Innovations Of Character And Virtuosity In Contemporary Opera, Kelly Fiona Lynch Jan 2007

Judith Weir's King Harald's Saga: Innovations Of Character And Virtuosity In Contemporary Opera, Kelly Fiona Lynch

LSU Major Papers

In 1979, Scottish-born composer Judith Weir wrote King Harald’s Saga for the soprano Jane Manning. Although an opera in three acts, the cast consists of one performer unaccompanied, interpreting various characters, including the protagonist, King Harald, two of his wives, and the entire Norwegian Army. The opera presented in its entirety is ten minutes in duration. The scope of this paper is intended to assist the performer as well as those who are interested in contemporary opera. I have provided a brief overview of Weir’s compositional style in opera, chamber opera and song. As King Harald’s Saga was Weir’s first …

A Performer's Guide To Ross Lee Finney's Song Cycle Chamber Music, Joseph Charles Perniciaro Jan 2007

A Performer's Guide To Ross Lee Finney's Song Cycle Chamber Music, Joseph Charles Perniciaro

LSU Major Papers

Ross Lee Finney (1906-1997), significant American composer and pedagogue, published five works for solo voice and piano within his catalogue of genres and styles. Though composed in 1951, Finney’s setting of Chamber Music, to James Joyce’s texts by the same title, remained unpublished until 1985. This song cycle, Finney’s last published solo vocal work, will be the focus of this document and subsequent lecture recital. The purpose of this study will be to examine seventeen of the thirty-six songs from the cycle and provide performance suggestions. The written document is comprised of five chapters: Chapter One provides biographical information and …

Blowing East : A Set Of Performance Practice Instructions For A Western Flautist Presenting Japanese And Indian Inspired Works, Asha Henfry Jan 2007

Blowing East : A Set Of Performance Practice Instructions For A Western Flautist Presenting Japanese And Indian Inspired Works, Asha Henfry

Theses : Honours

In the form of a handbook, this dissertation is predominantly directed at Western flute players interested in world music, the shaktthachi or bansttri, or who may be looking for advice on playing Japanese or Indian inspired works. Performing music that is not in the normal Western classical idiom can sometimes be a daunting experience for a flautist. By looking first at the background musical and cultural aspects relative to each country and then delving deeper into the finer details of characteristic nuances and techniques, the flautist can then take the music to a higher level. In addition, an extensive list …

Inside Story: An Arts-Based Exploration Of The Creative Process Of The Storyteller As Leader, Heather Forest Jan 2007

Inside Story: An Arts-Based Exploration Of The Creative Process Of The Storyteller As Leader, Heather Forest

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Storytelling is one of humanity's oldest art forms and an enduring educational method. Stories can spark social change. Although storytelling is tacitly recognized in diverse social science domains as a communication medium used to powerfully transmit leadership vision and ideas, little empirical research has been reported about how a teller constructs and tells a story. Through qualitative, arts-based methods, this heuristic study examines and describes the lived experience of a storyteller composing and performing a tale on issues of peace, justice, and social change. It reflects on the teller as leader and identifies a palette of arts-based skills for change …
