Memory And Hypnotism In Wagner's Musical Discourse, Jonathan C. Gentry
Memory And Hypnotism In Wagner's Musical Discourse, Jonathan C. Gentry
Dissertations and Theses
A rich relationship unites the composer Richard Wagner (1813-1883) and the history of psychology, especially if one considers his attempt to make music speak with the clarity of verbal language. Wagner's musical discourse participated in the development of psychology in the nineteenth century in three distinct areas. First, Wagner shared in the non-reductive materialist discourse on mind that characterized many of the thinkers who made psychology into an autonomous intellectual pursuit. Second, Wagner's theories and theatrical productions directly influenced two important psychologists - Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) and Christian von Ehrenfels (1859-1932). Finally, the experiences of music achieved by Wagner at …

The Effects Of Using Music And Movement To Enhance Learning, Lisa L. Snitker
The Effects Of Using Music And Movement To Enhance Learning, Lisa L. Snitker
Graduate Research Papers
This paper reviews the effects of using music and movement to enhance learning in early childhood years and in the elementary classroom. Information includes Howard Gardner's musical and bodily-kinesthetic intelligences, the effects of music on brain development in infants and children, studies in the effects of music on spatial-temporal reasoning, how music affects learning in the early childhood and primary years, and the effects of music on special learners. Appropriate for parents, caregivers, and educators, this review provides the basis for incorporating music into everyday early childhood and classroom experiences.

The First Movement Of Bartók's Second String Quartet: Sonata Form And Pitch Organization, James N. Bennett
The First Movement Of Bartók's Second String Quartet: Sonata Form And Pitch Organization, James N. Bennett
LSU Master's Theses
The moderato of Bartók's Second String Quartet is a lucid and eloquent sonata form that conforms rhetorically to sonata-form norms of the eighteenth century. This thesis will fully delineate the form and analyze the extent to which it conforms to these norms. In order to precisely place the movement in context, the Sonata Theory of James Hepokoski and Warren Darcy and William E. Caplin's system of formal functions will be employed. In addition, the movement's Grundgestalt will be identified, and motivic connections between it and the other thematic materials will be revealed. Bartók's pitch organization, while non-traditional, also aids in …
A Taxonomy Of The Effects And Affects Of Surface-Level Metric Dissonance, Jennifer Rae Shirley
A Taxonomy Of The Effects And Affects Of Surface-Level Metric Dissonance, Jennifer Rae Shirley
LSU Master's Theses
In his book, Fantasy Pieces, Harald Krebs presents a taxonomy of metric dissonance that lays a foundation for further study. The system that Krebs presents leaves ample opportunity to answer the following questions: Do metric dissonances that are labeled the same way have the same function in their musical context? What is the role of listening in the categorization of metric dissonance? While many theorists, including Richard Cohn, Walter Frisch, and Yonatan Malin, have provided valuable insights to the realm of metric dissonance, their work focuses mainly on hypermeter, large-scale formal implications, or specific analyses. In light of the above …
A Methodology For Thorough Text Preparation Of German Lieder, Emma Louise Blake
A Methodology For Thorough Text Preparation Of German Lieder, Emma Louise Blake
Theses : Honours
The impetus behind this study is the suspicion that singers beginning their training are either unaware of the vast amount of preparation that needs to occur when performing any work or they are aware but have no idea where to start. The understanding of text and an emotional connection with its meaning are vital to a successful Lied performance. This dissertation aims to create a method of preparing the text (of a Lied) that encourages detailed observation and creative thought, and which enables a musician with limited understanding of the German language to comfortably acquaint themselves with the repertoire. This …

The work will then examine his major musical influences in some detail, to gain an understanding of how his highly original style developed. Finally, through transcription and analysis, it will investigate the techniques of Kanitz's musical language and will …

Redefining Electro-Acoustic: Applying Techniques From Electronic Music To The Composition Of Pivot, An Acoustic Work For Percussion Quartet, Joe Stawarz
Theses : Honours
There are a number of characteristics that distinguish acoustic and electronic music. The most apparent difference is the nature of their sound sources, but there is also substantial variation in the compositional process and in the techniques available to composers of each medium. The history electronic music extends from two traditions: Western Ali Music and popular music. During the 20th Century, composers and popular musicians alike took advantage of the many advances in electronic equipment technology to create new styles of music. The development of electronic instruments and recording equipment offered new sounds and provided new methods for the creation …
[Introduction To] The Original Hot Five Recordings Of Louis Armstrong, Gene H. Anderson
[Introduction To] The Original Hot Five Recordings Of Louis Armstrong, Gene H. Anderson
Bookshelf
Between 1925 and 1928, the Hot Five, the incomparable Louis Armstrong and four seasoned practitioners of the burgeoning jazz style recorded fifty-five performances in Chicago for the OKeh label. Oddly enough, the quintet immortalized on vinyl with recent technology rarely performed as a unit in local nightspots. And yet, like other music now regarded as especially historic, their work in the studio summarized approaches of the past and set standards for the future.
Remarkable both for popularity among the members of the public and for influence on contemporary musicians, these recordings helped make "Satchmo" a familiar household name and ultimately …
African Art Music For Flute: A Study Of Selected Works By African Composers, Wendy Kristin Hymes Onovwerosuoke
African Art Music For Flute: A Study Of Selected Works By African Composers, Wendy Kristin Hymes Onovwerosuoke
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Recent years have witnessed an increase in the number of Western classical music performers actively programming works employing multi-cultural musical idioms. Though there exist many compositions by African composers, African art music is not often programmed by Western performers because of the lack of exposure these compositions have received, lack of commercially-available recordings, and the difficulties of obtaining information about African musical styles. The information presented in this research aims to aid performers in their preparation and approach to performing African art music compositions, specifically those for the western flute. This research includes biographical information and compositional philosophies of five …
