Five Challenges And Solutions In Online Music Teacher Education, David Hebert Jan 2007

Five Challenges And Solutions In Online Music Teacher Education, David Hebert

Research & Issues in Music Education

“Nearly 600 graduate students?”1 As remarkable as it may sound, that is the projected student population for the online graduate programs in music education at Boston University School of Music by the end of 2007. With the rapid proliferation of online courses among mainstream universities in recent years, it is likely that more online music education programs will continue to emerge in the near future, which begs the question of what effects this new development will have on the profession. Can online education truly be of the same quality as a traditional face-to-face program? How is it possible to effectively …

What Boys And Girls Learn Through Song: A Content Analysis Of Gender Traits And Sex Bias In Two Choral Classroom Textbooks, Patrick J. Hawkins Jan 2007

What Boys And Girls Learn Through Song: A Content Analysis Of Gender Traits And Sex Bias In Two Choral Classroom Textbooks, Patrick J. Hawkins

Research & Issues in Music Education

In an effort to further the understanding of gender traits or sexual bias that high school-aged choral music students might be exposed to in their curricular materials, two choral textbooks Choral Connections Beginning Level 1 Treble Voices and Choral Connections Beginning Level 1 Tenor-Bass Voices published by Glencoe MacGraw-Hill in 1999 were analyzed using a modified Bem Sex Role Inventory Model. The results found that significantly more songs were about men than were about women. The songs selected for the treble voices were more androgynous, while the secular music presented to the boys was significantly more masculine in the traits: …

The Effects Of Technology-Based Conducting Practice On Skill Achievement In Novice Conductors, Diana Hollinger, Dr. Jill M. Sullivan Jan 2007

The Effects Of Technology-Based Conducting Practice On Skill Achievement In Novice Conductors, Diana Hollinger, Dr. Jill M. Sullivan

Research & Issues in Music Education

The purpose of this study was to compare technology-based practice (Radio Baton and Digital Conducting System) to self-practice (recorded music) on the skill achievement of beginning conductors. Participants (N = 33) were undergraduate music majors—education and performance—from two beginning conducting classes randomly assigned to either the technology-based group or the self-practice group. Subjects worked for three, 15-minute sessions on the following skills: staccato conducting, legato conducting, and steadiness of tempo. The experimental design was a pretest-posttest using two conducting etudes to measure six dependent variables: staccato conducting, staccato presence, staccato steadiness of tempo, legato conducting, legato presence, and legato steadiness …

The Effect Of Band Director Leadership Style And Student Leadership Ability On Band Festival Ratings, P. Dru Davison Jan 2007

The Effect Of Band Director Leadership Style And Student Leadership Ability On Band Festival Ratings, P. Dru Davison

Research & Issues in Music Education

This study examined the relationship between band director leadership styles and the strength of student leadership within the bands. This study also examined the differences between leadership styles, student leadership strength, and band festival ratings (marching and concert). Subjects (N = 42) were band directors from Texas and Arkansas who participated in marching and concert band festivals. The Leadership Measurement Instrument (LMI) was designed to ascertain the strength of student leadership within the band programs, the type of leadership practiced by the directors (autocratic/facilitative), and the marching and concert festival band scores attained by the participants of this study. The …

An Exploration Of Personality Traits In Older Adult Amateur Musicians, Don Coffman Jan 2007

An Exploration Of Personality Traits In Older Adult Amateur Musicians, Don Coffman

Research & Issues in Music Education

The primary research question for the study was, “Will older adult amateur musicians’ personality profiles reflect the traits found in professional musicians?” Participants (N = 58, ages 52 to 79) recruited from a New Horizons Institute “band camp” for older adult amateur musicians completed a musical background questionnaire and the Cattell (1993) Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire, Fifth Edition (16PF) on their own time during the five-day camp. Group scores for all the 16PF primary and global factor scores were within expected ranges for a normal population of adults, although Factor B (Reasoning) was noticeably higher and Factors E (Dominance), F …

Preparing The Role Of Tytania In Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream: A Handbook For Singers, Emma Pettemerides Jan 2007

Preparing The Role Of Tytania In Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream: A Handbook For Singers, Emma Pettemerides

Theses : Honours

This dissertation represents a handbook designed to assist singers performing the role of Tytania in Britten' s opera A Midsummer Night's Dream. It explores the historical, literary, cultural, and musical contexts to the music and the drama. In addition, an analytical investigation is made into the ways that Britten has created musical characterization through the manipulation of voice types, melodic and rhythmic contours, motives, orchestration, tonality, and structures. The diverse types of knowledge chosen for investigation are foundational (in the author's opinion) in the development of an informed interpretation of the character, Tytania. This information can assist performers in avoiding …

An Investigation Of Musical Life And Music Societies In Perth (Western Australia), 1900-1950, Jessica Sardi Jan 2007

An Investigation Of Musical Life And Music Societies In Perth (Western Australia), 1900-1950, Jessica Sardi

Theses : Honours

This study is centred around music and music-making in Perth, Western Australia, from 1900-1950. It examines various parts of Perth's music history using both primary and secondary sources. Chapter one uses secondary sources, both musical and non-musical, to present an exposition on musical life in Perth in this period. The following two chapters move from macro history to micro history and are based on archival documents housed in the Battye Library. The progress of music in Perth, Western Australia-due to its relatively late colonisation in relation to the eastern states-trailed somewhat behind Melbourne and Sydney. However, once established, there were …

A Pedagogical Analysis Of Selected Pieces From Albumblätter, Op. 124, By Robert Schumann, Amanda Elizabeth Montgomery Jan 2007

A Pedagogical Analysis Of Selected Pieces From Albumblätter, Op. 124, By Robert Schumann, Amanda Elizabeth Montgomery

LSU Major Papers

Robert Schumann composed numerous pieces that are accessible to the intermediate piano student. In addition to his well-known Album für die Jugend, Op. 68, certain pieces from the Albumblätter, Op. 124 also provide excellent pedagogical material. Albumblätter is one of the last collections published during the composer’s life. The collection contains works written as early as 1832 and as late as 1845, spanning much of Schumann’s creative lifetime. He discarded several of the compositions from earlier sets, such as Carnaval Op. 9 and Kinderscenen Op. 15. Others were composed for a projected collection, XII Burle, which Schumann later abandoned. He …

The Selected Sacred Solo Vocal Motets Of Claudio Monteverdi Including Confitebor Tibi, Domine, Kimberly Ann Roberts Jan 2007

The Selected Sacred Solo Vocal Motets Of Claudio Monteverdi Including Confitebor Tibi, Domine, Kimberly Ann Roberts

LSU Major Papers

Claudio Monteverdi’s operas and madrigals, and their importance in the development of Western Music has been researched and discussed by many scholars. His sacred output, particularly the solo motets, is not as thoroughly researched. This study briefly explores Monteverdi’s life with emphasis on his sacred output, and discusses his development of text expression in the solo motets that echo the expressive progression found in his madrigals and operas. While focusing on three solo motets (two settings of Confitebor tibi, Domine and a setting of Currite, populi), this study traces the refinement of text expression and the development of stile concitato, …

An Analytical Approach To Vibraphone Performance Through The Transcription And Analysis Of Gary Burton's Solo On Blue Monk, Charles Bryant Brooks Jan 2007

An Analytical Approach To Vibraphone Performance Through The Transcription And Analysis Of Gary Burton's Solo On Blue Monk, Charles Bryant Brooks

LSU Major Papers

The purpose of this study is to gain a insight into the realm of solo jazz vibraphone performance through the transcription and analysis of Gary Burton's improvised solo on "Blue Monk" by Thelonious Monk, recorded on the Album Face to Face with pianist Makoto Ozone. Gary Burton is the inventor of the "Burton grip," a four-mallet grip used for vibraphone performance. His individual approach to playing the vibraphone and highly developed technique seem unattainable for many students of percussion. Nonetheless, many vibraphonists, including Burton, have published method books about his grip and its application. In order to emulate his style diligent …
