Music And The Brain, Kimberly D. Madison Jan 2008

Music And The Brain, Kimberly D. Madison

Graduate Research Papers

A great deal of literature focuses on the subject of music and the brain and how music can affect learning. Music stimulates brain patterns, and therefore should be considered essential in an academic setting. This review was written to provide an analysis of the published literature and studies in the area of music and cognitive development, to examine how the brain is wired for music, and to determine whether music is an effective tool in enhancing environmental and cognitive learning conditions in classrooms.

The Leap From Playing To Performing: Representing The Composer And Performer In Classical Music Performance, Rachel A. Price Jan 2008

The Leap From Playing To Performing: Representing The Composer And Performer In Classical Music Performance, Rachel A. Price

Honors Program Theses

The effect of a great musical performance defies description. It is brilliant and memorable, a unique and influential moment in time. But how does a musician achieve this level of performance? What is it that makes any performance special? There are no simple answers, but as musicians we are constantly exploring, trying to find some answers through trial and error. It is this exploration, and the lessons we learn along the way, that make music meaningful and unique to each performer.

The life of a musician would be much easier if one could answer the question, "How does one perform …

A Study Of Harmony And Form In J. S. Bach's Sonata In G Minor For Solo Violin Bwv 1001, Rebecca Leigh Homard Jan 2008

A Study Of Harmony And Form In J. S. Bach's Sonata In G Minor For Solo Violin Bwv 1001, Rebecca Leigh Homard

Honors Program Theses

My thesis project combines a traditional research subject with a creative element. My desired project was to create a study accompaniment for the Sonata in G minor by J. S. Bach (see Appendix 1 ), with the written research portion providing the justification for the creation of that accompaniment. I chose this project for several reasons. J. S. Bach is a favorite composer of mine, and I love playing his works on both the violin and the viola. Partially because of my love for his music, I feel like I am on my way to having a fairly firm understanding …

The Mise En Scène Of Rossini's Le Siège De Corinthe And The Conventions Of Staging At The Paris Opéra In The 1820s, Tina Huettenrauch Jan 2008

The Mise En Scène Of Rossini's Le Siège De Corinthe And The Conventions Of Staging At The Paris Opéra In The 1820s, Tina Huettenrauch

LSU Master's Theses

Shortly before 1800, the publication of livrets de mise en scène, short manuals including information regarding costumes, set designs, and blocking (i.e., the movement of characters on stage), became increasingly popular in France. While theater scholars (Gösta M. Bergman, Marvin Carlson, Hellmuth Christian Wolff) have recognized the value of these documents for the history of staging (and blocking in particular), musicologists have tended to focus on their impact on visual aspects and realization of drama. Those who have looked at staging (H. Robert Cohen, Rebecca S. Wilberg, M. Elizabeth C. Bartlet) have largely ignored the period prior to 1827, …

Night, Nick Hwang Jan 2008

Night, Nick Hwang

LSU Master's Theses

Night is a work in 2 movements, each depicting different aspects or qualities of night. Several instruments are given solo roles to depict the many parts of a night, from the wind, stars, moon, and the individual observing the night. The first movement, an introduction and prelude, brings forth elements of the overwork. These elements are later developed in the later movements. The second movement uses the solo clarinet as a character trying to escape an enveloping night. The dissonance and darkness seem overwhelming at points and pushing the clamorous clarinet to its extremes.

Theses : Honours

This paper will investigate Reich's 1967 composition Piano Phase, exploring the work's development from tape loops, the resultant patterns found in the work, the process involved, notation used, and also examples of phasing found in other works. Further, discussions will also take place with regards to both the author's, and David Cossin's adaptations of Piano Phase, including instrument choice and configuration, film and lighting requirements and rehearsal techniques. This project aims to present an adaptation of Piano Phase for solo percussion and multimedia, which provides an accurate visual representation of the process used in Piano Phase as well as taking …

Sound Frames, Maira Cimbleris Jan 2008

Sound Frames, Maira Cimbleris

LSU Master's Theses

Sound Frames is a one movement piece for orchestra. Its formal structure is free. As the title demonstrates, each section of this composition is “framed” side by side with the next one. The piece is organized in a non-traditional way, with contrasting sections one being followed by another and occasionally they are recollected throughout the work. The music of the well known 20th Century composer György Ligeti was the primary inspiration for this composition, specially his “Zehn Stücke Für Bläserquintett”. One of the techniques used in the first movement of this Ligeti’s work is the disguising of the beat using …

A Pedagogical Analysis Of Selected Pieces From Preludes, Op. 38, By Dmitri Kabalevsky, Sayaka Kanno

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Dmitri Borisovich Kabalevsky (1904-1987) is considered one of the composers who made the greatest contribution to the teaching repertoire for the piano. His interest in young people and devotion to music education has resulted in books and articles, as well as widely used pedagogical works including Childrenfs Pieces, Op. 27, Twenty-Four Little Pieces, Op. 39, and Five Sets of Variation, Op. 51. Many teaching materials in beginning to early intermediate levels include Kabalevskyfs accessible and imaginative pieces from these collections. In comparison, his advanced works are rarely performed in concerts or used for teaching among educators.@@ This research focuses on …

A Performer's Guide To Libby Larsen's: Try Me, Good King : Last Words Of The Wives Of Henry Viii, Angela R. Day

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

American composer Libby Larsen has created works in many musical genres. Larsen’s vocal music recordings have featured well-known performers such as Arleen Augér, for which Larsen won a Grammy as producer. Her vocal music employs texts from various sources including Nursery Rhymes and the Bible, as well as numerous others. Larsen works solely on commission, and in 2000 Larsen was approached by the Marilyn Horne Foundation to compose a group of songs for Metropolitan Opera competition winner, soprano Meaghan Miller. Larsen had always been interested in the wives of Henry VIII and the commission request finally gave her the opportunity …

"Shui Diao Ge Tou" From Poems Of The Sung Dynasty, Wennan Wang

LSU Master's Theses

“Shui Diao Ge Tou” from Poems of the Sung Dynasty is a piece for full orchestra. It was suggested by two poems of Su Dong Po. One is “Shui Diao Ge Tou”. The other one is “Jiang Chen Zi”. No movement of this piece has a fixed form, but the whole piece takes on the arch structure.
