Successful Teaching Strategies In Band Programs With At-Risk Students, Kevin D. Lewis Jan 2008

Successful Teaching Strategies In Band Programs With At-Risk Students, Kevin D. Lewis

Theses & Honors Papers

This thesis examines instructional methods for teachers of music in the new age and how to make the things learned in class relevant to their daily lives. As culture around the world is steadily changing, the methods for instruction need to be changing along with it. Not only does instruction need to now incorporate new technology, it also needs to provide students with relevant experiences they can utilize later in life. The thesis argues that teachers of music need to utilize technology in their classroom, respect the student’s creative choices, and encourage experiential learning.

Music Faculty Publications

We evaluated claims that physioacoustic therapy can enhance muscle healing following damaging exercise. Untrained subjects were randomly assigned to control (C), placebo (P) or treatment (T) groups. All groups performed 70 eccentric triceps contractions followed by; no treatment (C), sham physioacoustic treatment (P), or actual physioacoustic therapy (T) on days 1–4 post-exercise. Muscle soreness and isometric and concentric triceps peak torque were determined preexercise and on days 1–4 and 7 post-exercise. The T group received physioacoustic therapy for 30 min/day on the treatment days. The P group believed they received physioacoustic therapy, although the chairs were turned off. Peak torques …

Creativity Research In Music Education: A Review (1980-2005), Donald J. Running Jan 2008

Creativity Research In Music Education: A Review (1980-2005), Donald J. Running

Music Faculty Publications

This article lays a foundational groundwork of what is currently known regarding creativity and music education to encourage future research. It explores principal research avenues within various scholarly journals related to creativity and music education, including definitions of creativity, empirical measures of creativity, and effects of music instruction on general creativity scores. Definitions (and, consequently, assessments) of creativity fall into three general categories: product based, process based, and performance based. These definitions have generated a number of new theories and tests designed to assess the creativity of products and individuals.

Glenn Korff School of Music: Faculty Publications

Peter Wright's edition of English settings of the Sanctus and Agnus from the second quarter of the fifteenth century is the latest addition to the Fifteenth-Century Liturgical Music subseries of Early English Church Music, and the second to adopt a new format for notation and editorial apparatus. ... A generous critical apparatus for each work is clearly laid out, with highly valuable commentary in the General Remarks for many items. The editor's introduction discusses the policy of selection of repertory, the styles of the works edited, their age, sources, and composer attributions, the kinds of distortions in transmission that these …

Aesthetics In Culture, Dan Rager Jan 2008

Aesthetics In Culture, Dan Rager

Music Faculty Publications

This article examines the role of aesthetics in art, music, non-art objects, and activities in daily life. It shows that recognition is vital to our understanding of art and art-objects and sometimes creates conflicts which ask, what does one do with art? The question becomes more confusing when we think about non-art objects and activities which concern our everyday experiences from eating, clothing, cleaning and dealing with life's natural elements. The author points out that Western cultures have a distinct artworld that is usually limited for special occasions set aside for that purpose. He suggests that aesthetics in culture is …

The Interpretation Of Sousa, Daniel Rager Jan 2008

The Interpretation Of Sousa, Daniel Rager

Music Faculty Publications

This article creates a recording anthology from four of John P. Sousa's finest marches and includes "The Washington Post," "The Fairest of the Fair," "Hands Across the Sea," and "The Thunder." The titles were chosen because of their popularity as being the most recorded marches, and that they all have a common thread between them. Together, they create a unique collage of themes that when put together take on a new life. The author shows how all four compositions were assembled into a symphony titled Symphony on the Themes of Sousa written by Hollywood composer Ira Hearshen. Frederick Fennell recorded …

The Impact Of The American Community Band On Music Education, Rodney L. Miller Jan 2008

The Impact Of The American Community Band On Music Education, Rodney L. Miller

ETD Archive

Community bands in the United States have increased in numbers since the late twentieth century. At the same time, music education in American schools has remained strong even with the serious funding issues that face many music programs in nearly every state. The purpose of this study was to find what impact American community bands have on music education. Eight directors/executive directors from eight community bands were interviewed with 37 questions. It was determined that the impact that American community bands have on music education is positive and far reaching but that more could be done with further research to …

Aldebaran {Alpha Tauri}, For Symphony Orchestra, Eric Michael Akers Jan 2008

Aldebaran {Alpha Tauri}, For Symphony Orchestra, Eric Michael Akers

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Aldebaran {Alpha Tauri} is presented as a programmatic work for symphony orchestra. The eight movements of the piece correspond with a different theme represented by various details of each particular film scene. Notably, the piece centers on a protagonist and antagonistic relationship that is characterized by the titles of the movements. This relationship can be examined by a closer study of excerpts from the piece. The “galactic” premier was held at the Keith Albee Theatre in Huntington, WV on April 13, 2007. The duration of the work is 5’55”.

Debating Assessment In Music Education, Ryan Fisher Jan 2008

Debating Assessment In Music Education, Ryan Fisher

Research & Issues in Music Education

Music education organizations achieved a huge success in Texas several years ago when legislation declared music as a part of the core curriculum. Similarly, more recent national education legislation like No Child Left Behind has recognized music as a core curricular subject. Since that time, little has been done to assess music students to ensure a set of basic skills and knowledge is being achieved. While national and state music standards exist, these standards, in many cases, are not mandatory and merely serve as a guide or recommendations for music educators to follow. Other core subjects endure severe oversight and …

A Study Of The Comparative Perceptions Of Non-Tenured And Tenured Music Teachers And Music Supervisors Regarding The Needs And Concerns Of The Teacher In Music Performance Education, Dale E. Johanson

Research & Issues in Music Education

The purpose of this study was to elicit information through a survey from non-tenured and tenured music performance teachers and their music supervisors concerning their perceived needs and concerns at work. An instrument created for evaluation and assessment was constructed to yield twelve scale areas of needs and concerns. Comparison of responses provided results showing areas of congruence and disagreement among music performance teachers and supervisors.

Teachers placed teaching materials and resources as a high concern while supervisors expressed greatest concern in the area of music-related competence. In terms of assistance, non-tenured music teachers felt that mentor teachers, music conferences, …

Forms Of Graduate Music Education: A Response To Kenneth Phillip, David G. Hebert

Research & Issues in Music Education

It is truly an honor to see a response to my article from Professor Kenneth H. Phillips, in his “Graduate Music Education” within Research and Issues in Music Education, 6(1). Professor Phillips is an outstanding scholar and educator who has made a unique and important contribution to the fields of music education research and practice. His book on choral music is unusually insightful, and his most recent book on music education research is also a highly recommended resource that I use for my own graduate courses, some of which are online (Phillips, 2003; Phillips, 2008). I encourage readers to give …

Notes From The Editor, Bruce Gleason

Research & Issues in Music Education

Teaching people of all ages to make music together is still one of the most satisfying parts of my career, and as I share music making, teaching, and research with my University of St. Thomas graduate students as well as scholar-musicians around the world through RIME, I remember why I do this. Music is simply good for our souls.
