The Effects Of Ownership Consolidation On Diversity In Contemporary Hit Radio Music Programming, Russell L. Maloney
The Effects Of Ownership Consolidation On Diversity In Contemporary Hit Radio Music Programming, Russell L. Maloney
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The radio industry faces numerous challenges from newer forms of media. Specifically, devices such as the iPod threaten radio's role as the primary source of music for young listeners. This thesis addresses the effect of ownership consolidation as a result of the 1996 Telecommunications Act on radio music programming diversity. Instead of using the number of formats per market as a measure of programming diversity, this study used a content analysis of Contemporary Hit Radio (CHR) station play lists to measure diversity within a specific radio format. Overall, the study showed a significant increase in the number of plays per …

International Teacher Perspectives On Using Computers To Teach Music, Jun-Ting Sun
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated how four expert teachers from Australia, Japan, Taiwan and the United States integrated computers into their music classrooms. Through the use of qualitative interviewing methodology (Kvale, 1996), in-depth interviews were conducted between the participants and the researcher. The questions focused on the decision making process behind how these expert teachers chose to integrate technology in their music classes as well as the impact of various cultural, societal, and political influences (parents, teachers, students, school administrators, government officials and policy, and the community) on the development and implementation of their curriculum. Findings from this study suggest that music …

The Role Of Music Therapy In Increasing Motivation For Change In Individuals With Dual Diagnosis : Alcohol Abuse And Depression In An Inpatient Short-Term Psychiatric Setting, Ann C. Charoonsathvathana
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
The role of music therapy in increasing motivation for change in individuals with dual diagnosis with regard to alcohol abuse and depression in an inpatient short-term psychiatric setting is explored in this pilot study. This study involves a total of ten participants attending five music therapy sessions which consist of music improvisation, drumming, sing along, lyrics discussion, song writing, and music relaxation. A Readiness to Change Questionnaire (RCQ), Music Therapy Questionnaire and Music Therapy Survey form are administered at different times of the sessions. The ¿-tests (within-subject design) are used to analyze the data. The study also includes descriptive data …

A Stylistic Analysis Of Six Pieces For Solo Piano By Rodion Shchedrin And A Stylistic Analysis Of Trespreludiosa Modo De Toccata, Dos Danzas Cubanas, And Estudio De Contrastes By Harold Gramatges, Amanda Virelles Del Valle
Dissertations
This document compiles stylistic analysis for performance of selected works by the Russian composer Rodion Shchedrin and the Cuban composer Harold Gramatges. The piano music of these composers has been gaining international acclaim since the 1950's. The unique harmonic language, the elements of folklore, and the virtuosity found in these pieces make them very attractive for performance and research.
The document unites two papers, each supplementing lecture recitals offered on April 16 and 28, 2008. In each paper, after a brief biographical summary and an account of the piano repertoire of the respective composer, the pieces are examined, and matters …

Four Twentieth-Century Mass Ordinary Settings Surveyed Using The Dictates Of The Motu Proprio Of 1903 As A Stylistic Guide, Jonathan Candler Kilgore
Four Twentieth-Century Mass Ordinary Settings Surveyed Using The Dictates Of The Motu Proprio Of 1903 As A Stylistic Guide, Jonathan Candler Kilgore
Dissertations
In the first half of the twentieth century, major attempts at reform were occurring in music written for the Catholic Church. At the heart of this reform was the 1903 Motu Proprio of Pope St. Pius X. This document sought to bring clarity and focus to sacred music through limitation, as well as causing sacred music composers to make changes in their compositional methods. While still being modern, music had to conform to certain rules and regulations in order to be functional within the Catholic liturgy. The document also provided a great deal of detailed information regarding day-to-day occurrences within …

PERFORMANCE PRACTICES IN FOUR PUCCINI ARIAS TEMPO CHOICES AND CHOOSERS
Joshua O. Neumann, M.M. University of Nebraska, 2008 Advisor: Peter M. Lefferts
Opera is notorious for having a wide spectrum of performance practices. Among the most notable opportunities for performer liberty is that granted by the heightened emotionalism of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century Italian operas. Giacomo Puccini is the most prominent Italian composer of the turn of the twentieth century. His operas are among the most popular and most often performed in the genre. Puccini’s best-known operas (La Bohéme, Tosca, Madama Butterfly, and Gianni Schicchi) have been …

Victor Herbert: A Theatrical Life, Neil Gould
Victor Herbert: A Theatrical Life, Neil Gould
Biography
Victor Herbert is one of the giants of American culture. As a musician, conductor, and, above all, composer, he touched every corner of American musical life at the turn of the century, writing scores of songs, marches, concerti, and other works. But his most enduring legacy is on a different kind of stage, as one of the grandfathers of the modern musical theater.
Now, Victor Herbert has the biography he deserves. Neil Gould draws on his own experience as a director, producer, and scholar to craft the first comprehensive portrait in fifty years of the Irish immigrant whose extraordinary talents …

Theoretical And Formal Continuity In James Tenney's Music, Brian Belet
Theoretical And Formal Continuity In James Tenney's Music, Brian Belet
Faculty Publications
James Tenney created much of his music and theoretical writing as an objective experimenter, observer and codifier. This article examines Tenney's traits of curiosity, experimentation and honest self-evaluation through a subset of his compositions from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. Although quite diverse in many ways, these compositions share his mark of intense individuality, integrity and compositional rigor, which creates a macro-unity and formal continuity between works. Perhaps this is his ultimate ‘clang’ and conceptual ‘temporal gestalt-unit’. Each composition grows out of the need to address one or more specific formal questions: each work is indeed an experiment designed to …
