LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Herminie (1828) is a secular cantata which Hector Berlioz composed for the Prix de Rome competition on a libretto by Pierre-Ange Vieillard de Boismartin. This document begins by placing the composition of Herminie within the biographical context of Berlioz’s life and musical output. It outlines the early education of Berlioz and discusses significant individuals and events which influenced his compositional style, as well as the rules, prizes, and expectations of the Prix de Rome competition. The document briefly presents events of his life that promoted his advancement as a composer, with particular attention to his composition "Missa pro Defunctis" (1997). Lori Laitman And Sara Teasdale: A Performer's Guide To The Metropolitan Tower And Other Songs, Mystery, And The Years, Andrea Mueller
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
American composer, Lori Laitman, has published over fifty works for solo voice and piano. She has become an important contributor to contemporary art song composition, the genre in which she primarily focused her compositional efforts. Laitman may, at any time, be working on a variety of projects, predominately commissions. Though not an extensive amount of information has been published about her creative life, over the past eight years much interest has arisen in her repertoire, both artistically and scholastically. This paper will focus on Laitman’s settings of the Sara Teasdale poetry including three song sets: The Metropolitan Tower and Other …
Joseph Messner's Organ Music: Evolution Of A Style, Julie Powell Rozman
Joseph Messner's Organ Music: Evolution Of A Style, Julie Powell Rozman
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Joseph Messner (1893-1969) achieved fame in Europe for his contributions to the sacred concerts of the Salzburg Festspiele following World War II. In his early career, however, Messner earned initial acclaim as a recitalist and renowned improviser on the organ. Messner composed and published several organ works prior to World War II which contain style elements of late-romanticism and an emerging neoclassicism. This paper analyses the works in regards to form, stylistic elements, and performance issues in addition to establishing the historical contexts from which they originated.

An Introduction To The Life And The Songs Of Composer Chris Deblasio, With Special Emphasis On His Cycle All The Way Through Evening, Brian Bonin
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
For composer Chris DeBlasio, the omnipresence of HIV/AIDS during the final years of his life helped to channel his creative energies into a unique compositional voice. At a time when certain elements of the New York music scene rewarded atonality and musical experimentation, DeBlasio pursued a lyrically tonal, theatrically-informed style in the company of composers such as Jake Heggie and Ricky Ian Gordon. Unfortunately, his death in 1993 at age thirty-four limited the growing awareness of his compositions in the greater artistic community and robbed him of the success eventually experienced by his fellow tonal compatriots. Today, he is best …

A Performer's Guide To Oskar Morawetz' From The Diary Of Anne Frank, Jami Rhodes
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The primary purpose of this document is to provide a comprehensive performer’s guide to Oskar Morawetz’ From the Diary of Anne Frank. Born in Czechoslovakia in 1914, Jewish composer Oskar Morawetz fled Europe and Hitler’s advancing forces shortly before the start of World War II. He arrived in Canada in 1940 where he established himself as a leading composer. In order to avoid revisiting the associated pain of past tragedy, Morawetz did not read the diary of holocaust victim, Anne Frank until 1967. When he did, he was deeply moved and knew immediately he would set a portion of it …
Latin Rhapsody For Clarinet And Orchestra And Magical Realism In Alejandro Cardona's String Quartet No. 4, Alejandro José Arguello
Latin Rhapsody For Clarinet And Orchestra And Magical Realism In Alejandro Cardona's String Quartet No. 4, Alejandro José Arguello
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation is in two parts. The first one is an original composition, Latin Rhapsody for Clarinet and Orchestra. The second is a musical analysis, Magical Realism in Alejandro Cardona’s String Quartet No. 4. Latin Rhapsody for Clarinet and Orchestra uses Costa Rican ideas combined with classical contemporary sonorities, such as clusters and small pitch-class sets. The first movement, Tambito, is based on a Latin American dance rhythm in six-eight meter. The name of this dance is particular to Costa Rica, but it is a widely used rhythmic pattern used in other Latin American countries under other names. This movement …
Music And Community: Interdependence And Shared Learning In An Undergraduate Elementary Music Methods Course, Lisa Huisman Koops
Music And Community: Interdependence And Shared Learning In An Undergraduate Elementary Music Methods Course, Lisa Huisman Koops
Faculty Scholarship
In this study, the author investigated the creation of a community of learners in an under- graduate elementary music methods course. Participants included undergraduate students (n = 23) and a professor at a Midwestern liberal arts college. Data consisted of fieldnotes from class observations and interviews with the professor and students. The following priorities and concepts emerged as themes: interdependence, shared learning, personal growth, safe environment, and inclusiveness. The success of the community of learners seemed to be due in part to the professor’s dynamic, student-centered, interdependent approach to the course. Transferable aspects related to the creation of a community …
