When, with our eyes shut we run our hands along a surface, the rubbing of our fingers against the surface, and especially the varied play of our joints, provide a series of sensations, which differ only by their qualities and which exhibit a certain order in time. In this paper, I will explore the sonic relationship of sound to the development of new imaging technologies through Atomic Force Microscopes (AFM). Much of the power of the cinema experience lies with the sound track, and the way it interacts with what happens on the screen. Soundtrack composition has become a complex art, where musical ideas are enhanced by sound reproduction technologies and complicated by sound effects demanded by the action. The effects of certain ranges of low frequency sound which are featured in the creation and presentation of both film music composition and cinematic sound effects can add an unique dimension to the experience of the soundtrack, and indeed the total cinematic experience. Kenny Wheeler is a Canadian born trumpeter and composer who has gained the respect and admiration of musicians and critics alike for his distinct and beautiful compositions. Despite this acclaim, am extensive search of relevant literature has revealed very little academic study of his compositional technique. Through an analysis of the melodic, harmonic and structural techniques evident in selected compositions by Kenny Wheeler, this dissertation offers insight into what gives Wheeler's music its distinct sound. The influence of these techniques on the author's own creative work is discussed through an exegesis. The dissertation consists of three chapters. The first chapter …

Until the nineteenth century, the violoncello was considered a background accompaniment instrument. By 1900 however, over eighty method books had been published for cello, and Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss were composing orchestral cello parts equal in difficulty to those of the violin, traditionally the only virtuosic string part. The emancipation from the ties of bass ostinato for the cello began with Bernhard Romberg in Dresden. The group of cellists, who came to be known as the Dresden School, included Kummer, Lee, Goltermann, Cossmann, Popper, Grutzmacher, Davidov, and other cellists that were students and colleagues of this group. As a composer, Francis Poulenc has been under-appreciated and overlooked by many contemporary performers and teachers. Poulenc wrote music from his heart, paying little heed to formal systems or musical fashions of his day. In matters of harmony, he was content to use conventional chromatic harmony, but in a manner uniquely his own. Poulenc’s compositions always reflected his personality and Les Soirées de Nazelles is no exception. On Wednesday, March 11, 2009, Elizabeth Ann Carr, soprano, presented a recital in partial fulfillment of the Master of Music Degree in vocal performance. The recital opened with On this Island, a cycle of songs by Benjamin Britten, set to the collection of poetry by W.H. Auden entitled Look, Stranger! This cycle was followed by three melodies by Faure, on the poetry of Verlaine and Samain. The second half of the recital featured Menotti's Canti della lontananza on text written by the composer, and the last set consisted of three complimentary songs of Joseph Marx on text by Lingen, Hartleben, …

This recital was given in partial fulfillment of a Master of Music degree in Percussion Performance at the University of Northern Iowa. The selections included in this program are works which are representative of both the historical and contemporary styles of percussion composition. The following abstract provides discussion in the historical background, compositional styles, systems of notation, and performance techniques used in each of the works from the program.

A Symbolic Sonification Of L-Systems, Adam James Wilson

Publications and Research

This paper describes a simple technique for the sonification of branching structures in plants. The example is intended to illustrate a qualitative definition of best practices for sonification aimed at the production of musical material. Visually manifest results of tree growth are modelled and subsequently mapped to pitch, time, and amplitude. Sample results are provided in symbolic music notation.

Community music therapy (CoMT) is a creative approach that liberates expressions, giving voice to groups of individuals of all age, status, and race who contribute, in their own way, to build a better society. In this dissertation, I intend to reveal some of the critical themes in the experiences and relationships that apprentice music therapists have with community music therapy, peace, social justice, leadership, and mentorship.
